Absolutly gorgeous! I've drawn roses in the past & want to go back to it. It's something my mother & aunts did allot. One artist I'd love to watch sometime is Christy Reposy. I love her old world way of painting. But I love how you did these roses, I've never liked to draw with colored pencils before I found your videos. To me they were always to grainy.i so very happy to have found you! You are wound full to watch & I've learned so much in this last week. I've even ordered some prism colored pencils. Someday day I'll get the others, but first I want to draw! Thank you, & many blessings for sharing with so many people!

Hello Lisa, I just joined Patreon so that I could get access to the longer version of this tutorial of roses with colored pencils. I have gone on the patreon site but I am not sure how to find this video. Thanks for your help. I am so excited to start doing art again. It been over 20 years when I was overwhelmed by art school, quit and went into science. I am now only consulting for science so I want to do art for pure enjoyment. I have watched a lot of videos and you are one of my favorite artists. I love your videos on KZbin. You explain everything so well. I am only drawing at the moment, but I’d like to switch from graphite to colored pencils. I bought inexpensive pencils but I will graduate to better ones after I practice a bit. I made a list of your tips and materials. Thank you so much for sharing your art and talent!

This is exactly what I would love to learn. It's absolutely beautiful! Haven't found a good "teacher" to go step by step for beginners. Also, what if you're following along and don't use the same brand of pencils as the artist? Makes it hard to learn the layering process. Any suggestions?

lisa: one of my teachers always tells me to use contrasting colors to create dimension and shading in my drawings. for instance, for the leaves i'd be instructed to use red to darken the green, and glaze the colors on top of each other. personally, i love this look!! i was wondering if you like this technique or if youd do a tutorial on this. id love to see it! :)
@Lachri
@Lachri 9 жыл бұрын
+BrendaFOBRocks Yep that works great. Mixing a color with it's complimentary color will neutralize it (for example, if green is too bold green, adding red will give it a softer tone). The more you mix the more brown a color will come out :)

Hi Lisa, what's so special about the derwent drawing chinese white pencil that you switched to the brand (which you generally don't like?)? What are your general thoughts on the polychromos/luminance/prisma whites? If I remember correctly in one of your videos you said that the white is one of the few prisma pencils you still use and those vary in terms of opacity, but i don't remember which one is which.

Love it! Why do you use watercolour paper for coloured pencils?
@CrimsonNorway
@CrimsonNorway 9 жыл бұрын
+Eve Br I think it's because watercolour paper tends to be thicker than other types of paper. The thickness means that the texture (or "tooth") on the paper can be deeper. This means that more layering can be achieved before the texture becomes flattened (burnished).

@FeliciaFollum
@FeliciaFollum 9 жыл бұрын
Thx....that makes more sense... But then how is the tooth super important... Using water color paper must be for the thickness and paint thinner rather than the tooth... If it's because of rubbing watercolor paper (even coldpress) would take more rubbing before damaging the paper fibers than others. Just my guesses haha I haven't working in colored pencils much...

Lachri Fine Art, what is your opinion on Artist Loft art supplies? I want to try new things but I don't want to invest a lot of money, do you think Artist Loft is a good place to start? Thanks for providing the best art videos ever!
@kathryncastanares525
@kathryncastanares525 7 жыл бұрын
Kelly Ng I know you're asking for her opinion but, I wanted to just give you mine just in case she doesn't get to you right away and You wanted to get started sooner. I would say go for it. I actually started with their supplies as a teen not having the money for anything any more expensive. I absolutely loved them going from using crayola and other school supplies for my art, artist loft paints and other media was a dream come true for me. However, once you can/do switch to higher end artist grade media, you will see a difference in quality. I actually still use AL supplies because i actually still love them, but if im going to do something big or something im going to sell, i mainly stick to my "good stuff". So, in my own opinion i think AL is fantastic for beginning with and you may even have favorites that you continue to use regardless where you're at in your art.

@catherinehascake9173
@catherinehascake9173 9 жыл бұрын
+Fallon C In short: 1) baby oil, 97% alcohol as solvent. 2)blend without solvent. 3) Use watercolor pencil and blend with water. 4) try a different style of drawing (Sorry for long reply, but yeah) I find baby oil to be okay, but I rather not use that on expensive pencil. Some will blend with rubbing alcohol. But, most alcohol you will find is the 70% alcohol, and you really want something like 97% alcohol. I guess if you were to go, and buy a 97% alcohol, might as well get a little bottle of odorless mineral spirits (paint thinner). It is not to be confused with mineral oil! I bought a can of 16fl oz (473ml) of Gamsol, but getting something half of that size will be plenty, which will be pretty cheap. Also, Gamsol doesn't make me sick at all. With that being said, you don't need any solvent to blend at all, but your techniques will be different. You also would like to have a really high quality pencil like Polychromos or Luminance (Prismacolor will work too. They are fine intense color pigments and very soft wax core). Sometime I draw without the paint thinner, and instead I just blend with a blending stump. Lets say I need to achieve the very light shading that Lisa did under her rose, I would shave off a little of the lead, and pick up the pigment dust with either my finger (not very healthy as artist grade pigments can have heavy metals etc), cotton swab, or paint brush to apply the powder on the paper. I can imagine you to be able to heat up (with hair dryer) the surface of the paper to melt the wax pigments a little, and move them around with a blending stump or cotton swab to blend. I mainly work with Polychromos, so that isn't practical for me. I did drawings side by side, one with paint thinner, and one without. The one without took me longer to finish, but the end result look similar. You can also check out Heather Rooney's channel. She draw in full colored pencils (not mix media like other photorealistic artists) very realistic drawings without any solvent to blend. I don't know what her techniques are, and she didn't make any video showing them, but I'm just saying... it is possible. Lastly, try a different style of drawing. I mainly do this with my Derwent pencils, because the colors aren't very intense, and the leads are hard/chalky. So I usually do a more sketchy style of drawing with it. The drawings look very grainy, and raw, but I really like that look sometime.
@Lachri
@Lachri 9 жыл бұрын
+Fallon C I'm not sure it matters tbh. You will likely then be blending by burnishing which works fine too, it's just harder on your hands and you have to be careful not to burnish until the last layers or you will damage the tooth of the paper too soon preventing more layering.

Whats the difference between lumina pencils and polychromo pencils?
@catherinehascake9173
@catherinehascake9173 9 жыл бұрын
+ttttttttp2 Most obvious difference is their prices. Luminance costs double of Polychromos. Polychromos offers a full set of 120, but Luminance only got 80. Luminance pencil is wax based pencil (Pablo is Caran d'Ache's oil based pencil). Polychromos is oil based pencil. The core of the Polychromos feel like pencil (kind of hard), but the colors are so intense. Luminance is very soft, almost creamy, the colors are more opaque (because it is wax based), and the color saturation is a bit higher than Polychromos. Lisa did a Luminance vs Polychromos video, you can go check that out!

I think you might want to go with 4H pencil rather than 4B (4B is very soft, thus dark, and would almost certainly show through, whereas 4H is a very hard pencil and will give you a light sketch). Just my penny's worth.
