A beloved farewell to the Eagles of Jacomo.

We have had many thunderstorms here in the Lake Jacomo area. The storms here have been relentless for over a month. On May 19th, 2024 another storm blew across the lake. This one was just too much for the Eagles nest to handle, and it crumbled during the storm and fell apart completely. Not one person was witness to the event due to the fact that the storm took place around midnight. In the morning of May 20th, an eagle watcher reported the nest down. A Ranger was dispatched to the site and discovered one eaglet with a broken leg under the tree where the nest was. There was no sight of the other 2 eaglets, or the adult male (J2 ) or adult female (J1). The injured eaglet was taken to a wildlife treatment center. That is all I know about the injured eaglet. I can't tell you where, or even if they were able to save it. I will try to get more info.
As for the other two eaglets and the adults, it is all speculation at this point in time. Anything could be possible. I suspect that the injured eaglet was the runt, the youngest one, and the furthest from fledging. Whereas the other two eaglets were almost a week older, and just 2-3 weeks from fledging. If they were able to escape and fly away far enough to escape any damage from the collapsing nest, then the adult eagles may still be with them. There is just no way to know if they are still with us or not. It has only been 24 hours since the storm and its the beginning of a new work week so people aren't out on the lake to witness anything. We might not ever find out what happened. That is the way of Nature.

I am OK. I am a very grounded person. Death is a part of the natural world. It is are reaction to it that is unnatural. It's as much a part of every living creature as it is the air we breathe. It is inevitable. I can accept it better than most. All creatures go on to become something else. I believe we are all recycled 😉👍

I am so distraught over this. I could see the nest from our sailboat perfectly on E Dock until a few days ago. Without binoculars I was hoping that perhaps some greenery had grown around it, or blamed it on my bad eyesight. Two members of our Jacomo Yacht Club Volunteer for a wild bird sanctuary here in Missouri and I've forwarded this to them, in hopes that's where the Eaglet was taken so we can get updates. I'll let you know if that's the case, Dennis.

This is from our other Jacomo Yacht Club friend who also volunteers for Wild Souls: The Ranger took it to Lakeside Nature Center. I am hoping they will attempt to place a consstructed nest and attempt a renest. parents were circling overhead.

Dennis, I went todayin hopes of seeing J1 & J2 as I have been worried about J1's foot or leg after the vulture fight the other day and I sat there for about 45 minutes scanning everything and couldn't find the nest. I met Julie from AltitudeVideoProducts and she told me about the the eaglet. I guess I am grateful I didn't see this last night, otherwise I wouldn't have met Julie. Thank you for your videos. I am heartbroken and I understand it's the nature of nature and as I have told you before these Eagles and the nest has helped me transition from Chicago to MO. It was great meeting you and I appreciate how much time and effort you put in with J1 & J2 and introducing me to the nest via your channel. I am still going to stop as often as I can and hope for sightings, but I am definitely very sad and of course there are lots of tears as I write this. I appreciate you and your videos and I have hopes they will rebuild and J1, J2 and the Eaglets are well and find a new spot.

My heart goes out to you. I know how deeply invested you are to this eagle family. We are all hurting atm. I want to encourage you to have hope. Two of the eaglets were so very close to fledge that they might have been able to fly far enough away to be safe. If that's the case, then that is where the adults ( J1, J2 ) will be. I choose to believe they made it out ok and that the parents are right now trying to take care of them. They are strong parents, and their offspring are strong. Let us choose to believe that story. No one knows the fate of the eagels. We are all just guessing right now. I am deciding to take the high road until proven otherwise. I hope you do too. Stay strong

I suspect they will try to rebuild next breeding season. These two eagles parent very well together and have a very strong bond. This is their first failure. They have had a magnificent run of luck through six years. My money is on a rebuild in the same spot because of that success rate they have here. It was great meeting you as well. I went out today and saw the Mom and Dad. I tried to see if I saw any babies but it was too windy. I thought when I went out there things would be destroyed but nothing was touched. So weird. 🥺 But at least I saw the adults. 🙏🏼🦅

Lakeside has probably euthanized the one by now. His leg was severely broken. Many people have spotted the parents going in and out of the trees down to the ground and staying low for a while. Which is a good sign. It’s near the nest area.
