For the first 90 minutes I was filming the Eagles of Jacomo, only the eaglets were visible in the nest. The adult Eagles were out foraging, and I hadn't seen them for that entire time. Then, an explosion of Turkey Buzzards erupting from the nearby lake bank caught my attention. A large number of buzzards were flying off in all directions, leaving the carcass they were eating on because J1, the female adult Eagle, was aggressively chasing after them. I watched as she attacked and chased off the entire gang of buzzards. She was flying very aggressively. As she was chasing the buzzards, J2, the male adult Eagle, landed by the carcass ( I think it was just a large dead fish ). He was guarding the meal as she was chasing the buzzards away. J1 never showed up at the carcass, and I lost sight of her for a while. I was filming J2 perched in a tree after he had left the carcass, and the buzzards took it back. Then I noticed J1 perched in a tree not too far from him. As I was focusing my camera on her, I noticed she was perched on just her right foot while dangling her left foot over the edge of the branch. I didn't think much about it until I came home and was reviewing the footage.
I can't be 100% sure on this, but I do believe what I am seeing may be an injury to J1's left leg. I zoomed in on the footage to an extreme in postproduction to try an asses what I was seeing in the video. I did see some blood on her clawed injured foot. I don't want people to panic and overreact to these comments. Until I am able to return to the lake and get more video, I just don't know exactly what's going on.
In this video, you will see:
0:00 The three eaglets alone in the nest
3:30 J2, male adult Eagle, at the bank of the lake
4:23 J2 perched in a tree
4:43 J1, female adult Eagle, perched in a tree ( possible injury to left leg )
Wishing the best for our beloved Eagles of Jacomo.
