Sent to a young goalie starting out! I have been at it for 30+ years and took some great cues out of this especially the pointer about the chest. Thank you!

Was the gloves that far out an exaggeration for an example or do you really want them that far out? Or is it a comfort thing?

Hi Marc, thanks for the comment. Both the glove and blocker are extended out that far to aid with the overall balance of the stance, as well as to keep them in the field of view for the goalie. If your hands are in too tight to your body, it becomes difficult to use them effectively when making a save. Try to only extend your hands this far when you're about to take a shot because keeping them too far out for too long will fatigue you quickly.

a nice tip i was told is that you should always have your belly button square to the puck, and would it be appropriate to get in a lowstance if somebody was on the breakaway? im trying different things since i recently started doing both player and goalie and im experimenting with being above the crease, moving back, and how high or low my stance is

Thats the best thing to do is to keep trying multiple things that work for you and then you can always fine tune them later

I’m also a fan of promoting deeper ankle bend in action stance to get the knees closer to the ice

Hi Stephen. Increased ankle mobility absolutely assists with being able to get a more effective stance. Ankles in particular tend to be overlooked but they do remain one of the major sources for power generation. One of the areas I find that most goalies underuse the full range of motion in their ankles is in their power pushes.

i was a bit confused that his stick wasnt flat on the ice normally i like mines at a straight up and down but all goalies have a style
@jeandeguise2210

The reason to not have a stick flat on the ice is you want the puck to deflect and ''die'' in your belly instead of giving a return. Even more important when using butterfly

Hello Peyton, Thanks for sharing. I'm just trying to get a better feel for what might be going on. Do you find you're trying to get a wider/lower stance and you fall out of it, or do you find it difficult to move once you're in the wider/lower stance?

I find I struggle with being deep enough in stance: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKippICdqr2qjsU I know I went from a 27" ccm to a 26" as I miss sized myself and everybody was like "stick on the ice" afterwards which as an autistic doesn't help me much with bottom-up processing. Finally, some of my online goalie friends explained I am really upright and not enough knee bend. I have changed to be deeper in my stance, but I find it a struggle since I am close to 290 and my leg strength is poor to the point I find buttery butterfly recovery even challenging. Covid is limiting the time I get to practice and work on it really. Frustrating me.

Hi there. Thanks for the comment. Going to large with stick size is a common misconception as someone who's observing thinks that all you need to do is "put it on the ice", meanwhile the issue is actually the stance itself. As far as the stance itself is concerned, from what I saw in your video, you do need more of a bend in your knees. Try and think about getting your butt down like you're hovering over a chair. This will force you to bend your knees the right way. Covid has been an interesting struggle for everybody, but there are things you can do away from the ice. Try working on squatting and getting comfortable with being down in your stance for extended periods of time. It is unpleasant and will tire you out at first, but once you're used to them it will be easier to do for longer periods of time. Take a look at a few of these videos and see it they help at all. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZbRcnmagZ6cptE kzbin.info/www/bejne/imfZZGZtnqt-hqc

@@OnPointGoaltending I am lucky to have help from an online goalie friend thats also a physiotherapist. But, yes it took me some time to learn to be deeper down like that. I filled in yesterday and I definitely feel you on being hard to stay in a sqaut like that.

I’m trying to go low bcuz I’m tall and my legs r to far apart and I can’t move
@OnPointGoaltending
@OnPointGoaltending 4 жыл бұрын
Usually when people have difficulty moving around in a wide and low stance, it is due to their knees being too close together. Perhaps try separating your knees slightly and see if that helps, and don't make the mistake of separating your feet to get lower, this instead should come from the squat of the stance. Going wider isn't necessarily better.

Every goalie I have ever seen do not have the hands at the same height ? Why do they drop the blocker hand down on the the stick. It make no sense. The catching glove is up but the blocker is down? The net is exposed blocker side high all the time ?

If you’re a youth goalie or a parent with one, PLEASE READ THIS.. I was a youth goalie, for years. I started out strong, was good, best around in my age group. When going from age 14 to 15 i got a new coach, one who thought HE knew best how goalies should play. He forced me to start staying upright more, and told me not to drop down unless i HAD to. It completely ruined my game, i never played high-school hockey, and i was never good again because i wasnt playing naturally.. Please, PLEASE if you see a coach making a kid change his style because he thinks he knows best, please stop it IMMEDIATELY. It killed me that i never got to have fun playing goalie again, and never moved on.. Note: This only goes for kids who have been playing the position for years and developed their own style. If they’re a brand new goalie, never played, then a bit of direction is good. But more than anything, the direction SHOULD be, “do whatever comes naturally to stop the puck” cause its different for every kid. Please learn from my mistake of letting that coach ruin hockey for me...

Staying on your feet allows the best mobility, so the advice was solid. I just think you took it too far? Ever notice how goalies are usually pretty done when they go butterfly? Being on your feet is pretty paramount overall.
