I did something similar to the receiver pin on my motorcycle trailer hitch. I even added a spring so as to not rattle and make noise. My wife and I were leaving on a 30 day, 11 state, 8,000 mile motorcycle trip and I didn’t want my small cargo trailer, which I had just customized & having all my wife’s junk I mean our cargo in, just walking away. My wife thinks I worry to much but I say I’m just a realist. ✌🏽🇺🇸🙏

Before my 5th wheel days I would wrap the pin with some small bungees to satisfy my OCD. I like your solution much better with the Master lock.

I like it! Super simple and without a doubt, it’s very reliable. Thanks Marion!

I started using this method about 20 years ago, like you I drilled the hole to accept the lock and used a regular master lock, it worked just fine until one winter I needed to switch to a different type of hitch, and the lock did not work too well, so I used my torch to heat it to help get it off after I got it off I went to Home Depot and bought a new lock that was made for outdoor use and that ended that problem, where I live some people will lift your hitch while you are in the store shopping, this method also put an end to that problem too. besides that, it doesn't cost any more money unless you don't have a drill and the right size drill bit. Some might think it may rattle but It doesn't

Yea, unfortunately some people are crooks. I spray some lube in mine every once in a while for the same reason you mention.

That's simple, but effective. I mentioned in your other post the Gorilla locking pin. It's worked well for me for years.

Just made mine, great idea! Any lock only keep an honest person honest, so... I had a seized keyed hitch pin that I had to forcefully remove. Never again.

Thanks Marion tomorrow morning I'm going to check mine. I may very well do the same thing you did I've always been kind of skeptical of that locking pin with the three ball bearings

Yea, I just lost trust when I saw the cracks and I sent Reese my pictures of it and they haven't responded. I don't think they care too much.
@xxlxpman3 жыл бұрын
Great idea!! That's a great cheaper solution. I have a different brand lock similar to the Reese that cracked on you, mine has been OK for probably 8 years but I should replace it just in case.

That’s a smart idea!

I had to cut a Reese hitch pin lock off after 1 year of driving because it rusted and key wouldn’t turn. Sprayed it with wd40 probably on blaster. What a pain that was to cut off upside down.

Great idea. At 65 I'd have the leave the key with my Fibercon due to crs.

I did the same but that Masterlock #3 is not secure against stealing. You said you dont care but its the lock that lock pickers start on as its the easiest to pick. I used a stainless hitch pin and a stainless lock. It cost me $10 to get the hole drilled by a machine shop as stainless cant be drilled with a standard high speed steel drill bit.

I like your plan. Let's be honest, nowadays criminals carry battery-run angle grinders and cut-off blades. Very few still use bolt cutters. Doesn't matter if you have a lock like yours or a hitch pin lock, when they come to steal something, 15 seconds later it's off and they have what they want. We are just trying to keep semi-honest people from easy pickens.

Thanks Marion, I agree, the main thing is a totally safe pin system. Those ball bearing systems definitely warrant skepticism and it makes sense to be less trustworthy. Thanks to you I'm gonna have a closer look at my pins and might do exactly what you did. I think it's odd Lowe's didn't have a lock available that would fit without you having to drill it a little larger. My dilemma is whether or not to replace 6 year old TailerKing tires with new Goodyear Endurance tires because my TrailerKings look great with less than 5000 miles on em. Only one has a little bit of cracking. A few guys at shops tell me I got plenty of life on em still. Do blowouts still happen on tires that aren't that old and look very good? Thanks, God Bless and have a wonderful camping trip! 💥

I would suspect if you see some cracking it past due to change them but I always replace them at 5 years. 6 years, I'd change them. I did the same thing with my Westlakes. They looked new but replaced them anyway. The spare is still perfect. The Goodyear's are popular. The Maxxis M8008 are very good tire also.

masterlocks are notorious for being able to pick or cut. Sadly they used to be considered the standard. Now they are just to stop the smash and grabbers. Plenty of youtube vids out for that.

I don't trust those other kind of locking pins either. As long as safety is the issue and not security then this will be hard to beat.
@Hundert13 жыл бұрын
Do you know of a pin system that gives both great safety as well as criminal proof? Thanks
