I was forced to do something similar with my Thule hitch receiver bike rack. There’s a but welded inside the rack and it comes with a bolt instead of a hitch pin to cinch it tightly against the hitch to remove any play. So I bought a long bolt and drilled a small hole near the tip of the threads. Now I have to thread that long bolt into the hitch which takes some time and a quality luggage lock on the end. Hopefully it’s enough to slow thieves down.

I'm protecting a $500 Küat bike rack. The cheap locking hitch pin they provided with the rack will last about 5 seconds against a pipe attack. The solution I came up with is to use a high quality, mini U-Lock as the hitch pin. These things are designed with dual deadbolts to withstand leverage attacks and at 13mm think, it would take a long set of bolt cutters and a lot of weight to cut. With the location of the pin being so far under the bumper, I'm not sure a thief could position bolt cutters to generate the force needed to cut through it. OnGuard 8013 Bulldog Mini U-Lock is a $30 solution.

Thanks for the idea two years later. I just bought myself a Küat bike rack myself and went to buy a lock just to have something decent at least. But I was looking for a better more robust permanent solution. Imma check this one out.

That’s a lot better than what I have. And one more added feature of Your locking pin is; The part with the groove in it which snaps onto the other end is 50% embedded into the tongue where you can put a pipe over it all you want, but you can’t break that part off like the cheap Curt pins can be. What’s the brand name pin? I’d like to buy one.

You missed the main point of security against shearing the lock head off. The locking mechanism on the second pin has a sleeve that goes over the pin shaft itself that takes the sheer off of the small portion of the pin where the lock retains itself and places it on the full diameter of the main pin. Stick a pipe over the second one and try to break it vs the first style you showed. The difference will be dramatic. It will not break in the first place.

It’s ironic. The simplest solution is if you don’t have a trailer on the truck take the hitch off. I know everybody loves the convenience of always having it available. But if you don’t want the thing stolen, take it out of the receiver. Lock it inside the vehicle in a storage compartment or something. Where they can’t see it if they don’t see it they won’t know it’s there.

Pins don't easily come out once a head or tail is sheared. Before it is likely to slip out, Itd need to have been wiggling around for quite a few starts, turns, & stops. So you likely weren't paying much attention, or you grossly over stressed the pin cause a different type of failure. Did you recover the pin after it broke loose?(who am I kidding people who blame anyone but themselves are gonna claim: "the pin was stolen & that's how I didn't endanger anyone. What are you suggesting besides a joke? Let me fill you in on something.....thieves & such don't need KZbin to figure out how to defeat some device or tech. It might be enjoyable to imagine they're dumb but the reality is that they're not only stealing cause theyre unable to work due to laziness or their lack of brains...they simply have disregarded our societies ethics/morals in order to profit in minimalist amount of time × effort(people do this on a daily basis yet aren't jailed as they aren't caught or their act while immoral is not a crime yet.) Hell, ever noticed that some people never get their stuff stolen? While others it is almost constant? Maybe just maybe its retaliation......? Just something to consider.

When they are done they pull the car shells in the middle of the street and call the cops so the can take it away. That's how they get rid of their trash. They fill the empty cars full of trash. I ran a 5/8'' bolt through the hole, jammed two nuts on there, blind-pinned the nuts, then rounded off the outside nut with a grinder. I wouldnt trust that hitch pin, if a thief's got a pipe he can also get an adjustable wrench and have it in a few seconds more.

you know what would make your first lock pin work? Weld a thick walled, close fitting 2" long section of pipe at the hitch bolt hole. Now you slide that big pin through the hole, attach the lock, and the entire lock body is inside the pipe, fully protected from being bent off. ...even weld a gusset on the pipe to make it stronger and also prevent a pipe from gripping it.
@DonzLockz
@DonzLockz 8 ай бұрын
Awesome idea! I'm gonna do that but make it a bit longer, just enough to fit a 10mm hole and a (non Masterlock) padlock to prevent access to the low security hitch pin lock with a tall shackle padlock. Just another layer.👍🍻🤠🇦🇺

All these locking hitch pins are BS. Be careful putting one on that can't be sheered off if the lock siezes up.

@@thekeatons4 The video was very helpful. I just bought a tow and stow, and I'm doing the silent pin like you. I think a little grease will help prevent corrosion. Taking the hitch off at least once a year for cleaning might help too. And for those saying, "Take the hitch off, and you won't have a problem", we bought a tow and stow so we wouldn't have to take it off all the time. Slowing thieves down deters them. Many of these types of crimes are so called crimes of opportunity. And NOT, the work of a "hitch thief", although I'm sure they exist. Thanks for the video.

So the guy brings a pipe and a one size wrench. Problem not fixed. And they can take the second part of the hitch that isn't locked.
