This is an improved recipe over the one I used last year to make pollen patties.

Thanks for the tips. I usually just add 1 to 1 syrup with pollen substitute plus some honey bee healthy until I get a good consistency but I will try some oil and gelatin this time.

Yes that worked fine but this should lead to a little less wasted.

Hello Peter just a note I had purchased pollen sub from Mannlake two times . The first was a lighter color and the second purchase was a dark color. When I made pollen patties the first time with the light color it worked out just right then with the second time using the dark pollen sub to make patties they were really wet using the same mixture I had to add maybe a pound to a pound and a half more of the dark color sub to get it back thicker. I do not know what the difference there was but there are something different in it . Just thought I would let everyone know. As always thanks for your video’s and information.

Hi peter, thanks for your video. By way of a follow up, how palatable did your bees find this patty recipe last Spring? Are you making any changes for this Spring. Best Regards Frazer (UK)

I love the new jig - it looks like a much easier (and cleaner) job than last year's process. Do you think your nucs and singles have enough honey to start feeding now, or just the doubles? The NWS long-term forecast suggests we might have an early spring. Do you take that into account when deciding when to start adding pollen patties?

Smaller hives usually have smaller clusters and the proportion of food still to be used seems similar. But I am sure that is not universal. But yes, I try to take as many things into consideration as I can, but best to ere on the side of caution.

Mom's trick, put the jelly in a smaller bowl along with some hot water. Let it "bloom" for about 5 to 10 minutes before adding to the main recipe. Cuts down on stirring. I have no honey bee healthy on hand. Any thoughts on adding just a bit of lemon grass oil and or Thymol? Thank you Peter.

Thanks for the tip, I am reluctant even to add much Honey be Healthy so would be even more reticent to ad those, add extra stuff with extreme care.

Sugar syrup is more important. Pollen patties should be used with caution especially in areas of small hive beetles. iIf in doubt, dont use them.

If you have kept it frozen or dried I would imagine it would work very well. Be aware that pollen can spoil so use it quickly.....and they are for Spring feeding NOT Fall.

Hi Peter, I just watched a very interesting interview conducted by "A Canadian Beekeepers Blog" (30th April) and have swapped to flaxseed oil instead of canola as a result. Might be of use to you :) I could post the link but felt it was a bit disrespectful to post links to someone else's channel in your comments section. Let me know if you'd like it.

I thought the same thing. Use the same method as if you were making Jell-O on the stove...then devolve the sugar in the rest of the hot water. Mix the two together.
