Why not just move the now capped brood box on top of the bottom, after you cut the queen cells out of the 1st example? with the excluder above that? Instead of shuffling them around and letting the top fill with honey. It would keep your same goal with a lot less work just moving the top box down to the 2ed above the queen's and moving excluder above with honey's up top
@lavenderbridges5 күн бұрын
If you were trying to expand, would you just switch out the frames and use the queen cells in a split or does that defeat the purpose of a demaree? 10:09

Ha Peter would u be so kind as to say how many hives u have and what your loss are in a normal year I have found u can do everything right and spend thousands of dollars and they still die
@BeekeepingwithTheBeeWhisperer6 күн бұрын
Some certainly will die despite doing things right. I would say over the last 5 years I have averaged about 90% survival over Winter, this varies from yard to yard which indicates that local conditions (and beekeepers) play a significant roll in the variability! ....others are lost in summer and Fall due to queen issues (the price of making lots of nucs)

If you had to do it over again, would you go with the long hive or with standard Langstroth hives?
@BeekeepingwithTheBeeWhisperer6 күн бұрын
Langstroth, no question....so much more versitle. Long hives are fine for a hobbyist but not for what I do.

It’s always great to see the bees out! We had our warm days here in eastern Iowa on Thursday & Friday. Our bees hadn’t been out since the end of December. Needless to say there were a lot of brown polka dots on everything. We haven’t had a lot of snow this winter. I haven’t had to use the snow blower at all. This morning we were at -6F. We’ll have 2 more days and nights of frigid weather. Then it will creep back up in temperature. Stay warm & dry. Enjoy your trip to Florida. I haven’t been there since the mid 90’s. Take care!

Being part of this, great comments Peter. One thing I find alarming is the number of folks that do not used wind blocks. I've seen hives cold flushed. Devastating as it can and will kill any strong hive. Thanks again Peter.

Glad your girls are doing well. It's currently snowing here in south central Pennsylvania as it makes it's way to you. We are also expecting negative temps for the next few days. I'm hoping for a warmer February so I can get a little pollen patty on my colonies before the red maple start to bloom in early March.

The bees have been out taking care of 'business' for the last 2 afternoons here in SW MO in the 55-59 degree weather. We wrap with 1" blue board and surround that with thermal bubble wrap. Cold weather is better than warm in the winter. Warm bees are active, active bees eat more stores. Good luck next week all!

Nice job! I think wearing a veil at minimum is important for even the most sting tolerant keeper. The face tends to swell more, plus bees entangled in hair can be an exciting alert pheromone situation

Hi Peter, So the cozy on the side by side NUCS looks pretty tight, but you managed to get it on. I have double stacked NUCs, side by side, and was wondering if a double deep 10-frame cozy would work. Would you recommend using the cozy for double NUCs then?

Excellent video Peter! I agree, definitely worth covering this topic multiple times because of the many variable approaches. As you know, I’ve been using Demaree for a number of years now. I’m in Southern Ontario … timing for first Demarees here is typically 3rd week in May much like in Maine. I see the Demaree approach particularly well suited to the small, medium and large hobby beekeepers that have at least a few years of experience under their belts. It takes more time, but like you said, it eliminates the swarming headache issues as well, so for me it’s definitely worthwhile. From my perspective, it’s also something you only do with some of your hives…. Most people only have so many extra deep boxes. This past year I did Demarees on 10 hives out of my 23 production hives. I usually target Demarees on the largest hives. I do find that it’s important to be doing equalization of hives in the few weeks prior to the Demaree to take the edge off the booming hives. For some of those 10 Demarees I did do a second Demaree on them as well about a month later. As a result, for me last year, I did no splits on any of my hives in the spring and all swarming was controlled through Demaree. I have no interest in growing my number of hives. In my part of Ontario, I was lucky, the weather and honey flows were almost ideal last year. For the benefit of your other followers and to illustrate what’s possible, my honey production last year over all my 23 hives was 185 lbs/hive on average. That was with 10 hives done as Demaree (a few of those twice) and 13 hives with no Demaree). Average honey production in Ontario is more typically 50-70 lbs/hive. Demaree isn’t for everyone, but for those people that can deal with the heavier deep boxes, and want honey production and reduced swarm issues, it’s certainly a great tool that is too often overlooked in beekeeping. To keep things manageable and not have the hives get too tall, as you point out, it’s important to harvest a few times during the season. I find with the later Demarees after mid July in my area, the bees won’t draw out complete frames, so better to use drawn frames if you do a Demaree or just don’t use Demaree later in the season.

My bees seem to be building up even though the cold weather. They are still taking sugar water and consume 1 inch cubes of pollen patties . This is unusual behavior but I have to let the bees make their own decisions .

If you have 2 brood boxes above 2 super boxes on top of the mother brood box ,with an entrance on the mother brood box base ,where do I put another entrance for the new virgin queen to leave and return as a queen of the trapped drones ? Or type of entrance

Hi Peter, Great video. Worth the repeat. Will the Demaree method stop swarming if there were one or more capped queen cells (which would obviously be destroyed)? I’ve heard that once capped, the hive will swarm no matter what which is why I’m asking.
