A Better Way to Clean Up Your Tom Tracks - Control Cymbal Bleed, Tom Rumble, and Sustain

I do something really similar but I do it with gates and some click samples in Reaper. Duplicate each tom track twice, cut on the start of the transient for each hit (on only the third copy), after all cuts are made, replace each item/region/media on that chopped up track with a sample (I use a printed metronome click but it could be anything...a print of 5ms of white noise?) through the "replace items with media" in Reaper's media browser. Then I use that sample to trigger a gate on each of the other two copies of that tom track. One copy is high-passed and the other is low passed. You can tune the gates to specific times and tweak the hpf/lpf filters. It gave me a bit more predictable result than Fabfilter ProMB. Plus since all the triggering you're doing is coming from that other track you can process and print in any way you want without having to worry about whether or not you can go backwards with the processing.

This was exactly the video I was hoping you’d do when I saw the title. I recently learned about using expanders for removing cymbal bleed and excited to try this. Appreciate that you put all the settings on the screen! My MBC doesn’t have a side chain so I’ll need to look for a solution. Might be a Reaper plugin that can do this.

I use an outboard gate that gets it “closer” which sometimes I’ll just leave , or I’ll do the manual clipping after, depending. This is a great method tho, cheers!

Really good methodology. I'll have to see if Studio One has it's equivalent of direct processing

Let me know what you find out! I haven’t tried this method in every DAW so I’m really unsure how many DAWs can do this or something similar.

@@RecordingLounge I think the only way to date to do this in studio one is to add the eq as you have done, then render track FX, makes the edits to the dead air then transform back to be able to remove the eq. I'll try this later

@@cedricodoi8579 ok, I've worked out a way to do this. Duplicate your audio track. Add your Pro EQ to the duplicate track, perform the roll off as shown on this video, now Bounce the audio, the waveform should update is view with the EQ applied. If it's not right perform undo and redo the EQ until your happy with the outcome. Now simply drag the pro EQ to the original track and render the FX. From there you can now perform the fade edits as shown in this video. Delete the duplicate track
