Have you ever noticed how bulky the waste runners are when you've finished a Gundam model kit? Do you ever feel guilty to send that gnarly, bulky stack of runners right down to the landfill? Well, there's a better way to have less impact on the environment -- and all you need is a pair of cutters and a few minutes time!
Also, come hang out with us on social media!

My guilty concern was when my wife found the runners in the trash and realized i had bought another new model kit.

Then it'll be like hiding a body if you cut up the runners...

Fyi: The runner can be reused for 3D printing, if you know how to treat waste of course. it just melted btw

Sometimes I recycle some of the runners by making them into weapons for my hg kits like a spear, a hammer, and even a double barreled shotgun, or just to make 3mm peg connections/replacements for whatever I need to connect.

Always done this, a habit from cutting apart plastic can/bottle 6-pack holders. Similarly, chopping up runners also alleviates worry if they do end up in landfills, that small animals won't get caught up in them. Thankfully, my locality does take plastic for melting, but I know it's not an option everywhere.

What about collecting your plastic for use with injection molding projects? I've been seeing exciting things with kitbash hobbyists taking scrap plastics and using them to make new things!

It is dangerous because of the plastic material.

@@adanrodriguez3160 There is a fume issue to be sure, and it needs to be handled carefully, but surely hobbyists who regularly deal in paint are aware of the dangers of remelting plastic.

never thought to cut them up to pieces.... aside from taking a large amount of space the uncut runners always snag to the bag too causing tears and poking out of the bag at times

I know what you mean, I've had trash bags break on me before because of the runners tearing right through

same here, i have a massive box, just full of model kit runners, i intend to melt a few and possibly try and mold them into something, it would be amazing if it works, i could build an army of mobile workers if it did, lol

I've started doing this without clippers because I don't have a spare pair, so I'm just ripping them apart with my bare hands, sometimes bits go flying never to be found again... sometimes I get sharp plastic that could cut me... but it basically works.

What would be better is to recycle them.

Hm, that completely skipped my mind, but you're right. It'd be better to chuck them into a recycle bin

no one recycles plastic for reuse. its all a sham bc countries export their trash to poorer countries.
@HobbyClubhouse
@HobbyClubhouse 3 жыл бұрын
I've heard about that too. Bandai is collecting old runners for reuse, but that's only in Japan and in very specific locations
