All pieces were made from Standard English Porcelain No. 365
Ann also creates sought after custom mugs that she paints exclusively for individual clients. If you would like to learn how Ann paints - check out her Video Workshop Series here. These workshops are very detailed (typically 1.5 - 2 hours in length) where Ann provides step by step instruction and are designed to help potters take their work to new levels of craftsmanship and artistry. vimeo.com/show...

Anne, I really like these forms. I see the closed form you made with handles over the indented sides...maybe just a coil that reforms the original shape...flattened just a bit. I love the way you glazed some of them. Thanks so much for the lesson.

I love these soo much! Wow!! Thank you so much for the templates!! Can you elaborate further on how smoothing the rim down helps the piece to not warp! I have such problems with warping. Thanks as always Ann.
@annruel1982
@annruel1982 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Michele. Good questions. Actually it is not really the smoothing the rim, but it is pushing the rim backwards. I am thinking that if the clay is already bent in one direction, that it would resist random warping. In other words, I am trying to control the probable bend in the kiln by bending it the way I want right now before it goes in the kiln. Does that make sense? Thanks again for watching Michele!!

@@annruel1982 YESSS! I totally understand what you mean!! I will start trying to do this with my mugs. I only hand build and thought I had finally figured out how to get my mugs/cups to stay round. I bisqued a huge kiln load last weekend and only had one mug go wonky on me. But it was really bad! Not sure why since I make them all the same way. Thanks again.

Wonderful demo, once again. Why do you do these projects in porcelain and not regular clay? How does this change the work process for you?
@annruel1982
@annruel1982 2 жыл бұрын
Hi R.V. Good question!! I have limited the clay in my studio to two. The Standard English Porcelain 365 and I also have a non grog brown Highwater cone 5 clay (I only use the brown clay to make specially decorated pieces on the white clay). I chose the Porcelain because first the smooth non grog surface makes it ideal for painting underglazes on which is my main way to decorate my pottery. Second, it has a cool white color which is what I wanted against the warm underglaze pallet I paint with. Third, as the clay is non grog, the clean up is easier than stoneware. Even at the bone dry stage, I can go over the whole thing with a sponge and it becomes as smooth as butter. The downside of course is that it is very finicky. Without grog, it can warp easier , it shrinks more, and you have to really watch how it dries so it doesnt crack. If I were doing just about anything other than underglaze painting, I would probably choose a more hearty stoneware. Hope this answer helps :-)

Hi Ann, the pastry mats you use for outlining and flipping your pieces - are they ordinary silicone mats, or are they older plastic ones? They look ideal and stiff enough to support the pieces. Thanks for your videos!
