The best of the best man and his channel for al Tormek users. Unfortunately this wonderful and giving of his knowledge man has passed not so long ago. I personally give my respect to the family, and thank them so much to keep these videos up on KZbin. R.I.P my sharpening guru. From Quebec, Canada…. Peace to you and your family…..

Right? Im just now getting into it, gutted he died. Betwren all this info and the fact that they made their angle adjustment app to have versions for knockoff brands like WEN means I'll be able to start sharpening for half the cost.

I ended up following your instructions for this (only thing missing is the plane iron). The 80 grit plate, even now that it's 'wearing in', works so much better and so much faster than the course side of the grading stone. This has resulted in a very significant boost to my speed in roughing out a bevel. Thank you for all of your work, you really are advancing sharpening so far forward.

Hi, you see in the first video you have entered the subtitle option. In the second video you didn't put that option in. It depends on you. Very informative video.

Very useful tutorial- thank you for sharing. Im wondering where you can buy the Sun Tiger 4000 grit wheels? I have searched on the net and keep coming up short.

Another great, informative video. Just out of curiosity, in you shop do do change the grit on the SG wheels or keep them at a specific grit and just change wheels? Thanks
@knifegrindersaustralia51583 жыл бұрын
In the very beginning, we had 2 SG wheels, 1 coarse, and 1 graded fine. Then we used the Japanese Sun Tiger #800 wheel as the fine wheel. JIS #800 is like Tormek's FEPA #1000-1200. Now we use only our CBN wheels.

I have a T4, which jig and plate do you recommend? Thanks!

Do you spend 30 seconds grading normally or only that long after truing?

When you grade coarse to fine, do you change out the water before sharpening?

Hey Vadim :) Can u make a link for diamond plates u use, its a jungle for me to find them sheap here in Europe :( Regards Tommy
@knifegrindersaustralia51583 жыл бұрын
Tommy, size is what matters. Of the right size, pick the cheapest ones, as they do wear off, are a consumable.

Instead of using the plane iron for stiffness, could you just double up the diamond stones in the jig?
@knifegrindersaustralia51583 жыл бұрын
I simply used what I had at hand. Any stiff plate that fits the square jig will do.
@SonnyShizzle3 жыл бұрын
@@knifegrindersaustralia5158 thanks for the reply. Definitely a great idea to use the diamond plates for grading the stones. Btw... I ordered two of each (like you said in the video because they wear out) and used contact glue to glue them together. This negates the need for a plane iron.

On the Japanese stone , is the 1000 grit plate good for cleaning the stone ?

Yes

I can see where having 2 square jigs could be beneficial.
@TheFedster183 жыл бұрын
Because the Japanese stone is pretty soft, isn't it simpler to (1) use a 400 diamond stone on the square jig to TRUE it, and (2) use the 1000 diamond plate to grade it?
@knifegrindersaustralia51583 жыл бұрын
When my SJ went out of square, I tried "truing" it with the #80 diamond plate in the square jig. It works, but takes time and patience, in my case it took 15 min. As you rightly noted, after "truing" with the #80 diamond plate we have to grade it with the #1000 diamond plate.

There are two aspects to truing the Tormek wheel. The first is to make the stone surface parallel to the Universal Support Bar. The second aspect is to reduce stone runout, i.e. non-concentricity around the spindle. The Tormek truing tool can address both aspects of truing. On the other hand, the diamond plate truing method shown in this video can only make the surface parallel with the USB. The diamond plate method demonstrated in this video can not fix runout or non-concentricity. Perhaps with a different jig holding the diamond plate firmly it may be able to fix runout or non-concentricity, but using the method shown in this video, it can not.

I love your German engineering mindset on this; however, wouldn't it be easier to make your own wheels from plastic and attach sandpaper? Think of all this money you have invested vs. a corian wheel with a belt stretched over it. I'm making this apparatus now, and video should be up in a month.

@@findonknifesharpening Well...Life got in the way as it seems to do. I still really want to do this and I just bought a 3d printer for my son so perhaps this month? I am motivated but i'm short on time. I have been thinking about it for about a year and i have several new ideas to try. Ok! I'm gonna do it! By August15th 2023. At least a short will be posted. Thanks for the kick in the pants Rich
