My thoughts go straight to the automation aspect of this. Compress during the verse, limit during the pre-chorus, overdrive during the chorus with one smooth automation. Might be a cool tool to play with!

Newfangled Audio also has the best transient processor or limiter i ever heared, it's so natural sounding. In my opinion, it's such a beast and it makes a good pair with Split EQ

it makes a lot of sense to approach compression from new perspectives. after all when OTT was released it pretty much dominated all of EDM for years just because of the way its UI makes you feel like pushing it hard is actually the encouraged thing. but you have to be a little lucky to make a plugin like that. i mean OTT wasn't even a plugin in the beginning, but just a popular Ableton preset, so some random Ableton developer probably just sat there trying to go wild in their compressor plugin and thought it was kind of a funny emotion, saved it as a preset and went to sleep. It surprised a lot of us who already began to think that compression has reached its peak with the countless same-y analog emulation compressors, because apparently it can still happen that sheer compression adds something new, if only presented in a new way. but what will be the next actual thing in the compression plugin world? no one can really know yet

Seems it's not so much a new way to approach compression but the recognition of the need to adjust compression, limiting, and saturation all at the same time. I definitely sometimes cycle between adjusting compression and then needing to adjust saturation and limiting, so this might be a more effective way of doing it. Interesting!

Yes! Something new from Newfangled! His stuff is absolutely remarkable. Every module in Elevate is so damn good, and Generate is an extraordinarily good sounding synth. This plug-in reminds me a lot of Wild Wave Fu by bang! (a JSFX dev). It basically looks like a dynamic waveshaper, but unlike Wild Wave Fu, this has an internal sidechain and release.

Looks like an interesting plugin, but I think it would've been a lot better if you could use each of those 3 effects that they're including, in parallel. Kind of like iZotope's Neoverb does it with 3 different types of reverbs. Can have a bit of all 3, whereas here it's just the two, and there's no way to have a mix of two that are on the sides.

Honestly, I don't understand why the distortion shape also increases when you pull the knob only to compression and not into overdrive. Shouldn't that only happen when you move the knob all the way to the upper right (overdrive)?

Looks like the compression/lim/dist are all one "circuit" so the curve would be the shape of the compression curve when in that left zone and the dist curve when over to the right.. only glanced at the manual though so might be off

Interesting! The morphing idea between compression, limiting and overdrive/distortion makes sense. It's maybe a more intuitive and affective way to control the compression, rather than a technical one. Many companies try to make 'intuitive' UI's, but the downside is that you often lose control over the fine details. This seems to get the balance right, with a fresh angle to the whole thing. That being said, I prefer the traditional way of adjusting threshold, ratio, attack and release, but that's just because I'm used to them, and I know what to do to get the desired effect. However, this could work for some. I guess time will tell.

Now imagine an a plugin that professionals add their mix process too and build up a databank of info about in which order they commonly approach each step in their mix and such. like a written masterclass from them that you can use to copy their workflow and learn from them while you are working on your own project. Im thinking it could have a list of different mix engineers who have added to this. and you just select one you know about a want to learn from and then follow a sort of step by step guide to follow in the same workflow as that engineer. and having this as a plugin means you dont have to alt tab as well as you could be consistent .you could add, rearrange or remove things in these and save as your personal mix proccess so you don't forget a step. i mean this could be there for creative purposes too. its like taking notes, or learning from experienced engineers notes and editing their notes to suite your workflow better. A plugin that just helps you be more consistent. maybe theres a thing you would like to remember doing in your arrangements or mix that you sometimes forget about. this would help. as it would be a step by step thing. lets say you just mix an already recorded track and you start this plugin and the first thing it tells you is to rename the tracks, put them in order, make groups and folders, gainstage, set the levels to these rms levels, compress until you reach this dynamic range on these sounds, limit or clip at around these peak levels. solve this number of things with an EQ on this and that, reach this tonal balance target on these sounds, and so on. it could help beginners to learn faster and hel everyone else be more consistent in their process. and potentially improve your process by learning from well known successful engineer and edit that process to your likeing so that you can get consistent at it. My memory sucks so stuff like this helps me a lot. but i forget to take advantage of the notes i've been taking to try to stay consistent. but anyway. i think this would be a great asset, especially for beginners.
@akagerhard
@akagerhard 2 жыл бұрын
I think once you get the hang of it, this can be a lot faster to dial in, BUT I'd like to see little numbers that tell me how the ratio is changing when going from left to right. From where I'm sitting this makes more sense in sound-design and production than in mixing and mastering. The speed at which you can drastically vary the processing in ONE plugin with ONE drag of the mouse is what makes this more of a "I will try out what works" instead of a "I know what this track needs and I will dial it in precisely".

It looks like a really interesting and quick way to get from a to b, but I feel like I prefer to employee and keep learning the foundational knowledge of the art of mixing rather than what might be the quickest and easiest, even if it means the product isn’t as good, sometimes.

i think it would be cool if there was a button and then the UI would go back to being a classical Compressor UI but it would not change the parameters for the current UI design.

4:52 Why did you turn bass up on the input? That's absolutely backwards. The point of having controls like this is so that you can attenuate bass on compression. Instead, you made the bass smash the compressor even more which is why all your examples were distorted after that. All these years later and you still don't have a clue

Just like with Process Audio Sugar, and a Newfangled synth generator I own, this thing feels like it'll eat 20% of an already powerful cpu rig if you're not on an M1. These are all things I wish would be mentioned in reviews (again I don't like trials cause installing and deleting plug ins can be tiresome with all the extra software you have to install sometimes).

I was excited to see a new release from Newfangled, especially a bus compressor, but what i don't understand is, is it combining Comp, Limit and Distortion ? If i move to the distortion side, have i lost the compression ? Is the middle a combination of compression and distortion plus limiting ? I thought it might be merging a sweet spot between them all, and that the X-Y controller would present an easy way to find different sweet spots.

To be honest, I was surprised how well Native Instruments' Supercharger performed. Not the GT version, though, but the simple one. Set the input to the green range. Turn one knob. Done. The GT version (extended version) which has all the parameters and more was just distracting in comparison.
