I buy one, yesterday test for first time. I'll tell you how it goes.

Interesting but gainstaging is allways a Thing in a analog Chain, isnt it? Regardless of referenz Level. Most Equipment Has output gains? So its important to know about it for the first Unit in the Chain...?

Great demo. I recently bought the UAD Fairchild limiters plug-in. It's certainly a unique way of doing limiting. That looks like you're using a Lewitt tube mic. Sounds great.

A video that also happens to interest me.(volume) I am purchasing more 500 rack modules myself. The only problem I now have is when I want to use 2 (mono) units if the stereo volume balance is not equally loud. I solved this in Ableton External audio effect by placing a utility plug-in with panning left/right. I have yet to find out whether I am doing the right thing 🙂

It's for producers in the creation stage and it's not perfectly reliable in that application either... and when Atmos becomes more and more the thing there will be not much need to use EQ to fit things so will only have so much use in the future anyway

Brother, you have been saying "they should make the plugins with auto-gain" in all videos, and they don't listen... man, I really wish they could listen to you... That's so simples and logical. Thank you for your efforts. All plugins should have that... One love and keep the good job!

Really sounds there is also going something on with stereo-linking on the compressor, when you A/B the SSL and the Fabfilter MB you can hear the mono channel staying very centered on the MB when the SSL pulls up a lot of activity from the side-channels

It's like Audacity in 96kHz 24Bit mode. But noisier, more expensive, lower dynamic range, smaller SNR and more THD, vow and flutter. Furthermore, you have to clean recordings heads.

TDR kotelnikov does RMS and peak compression and you can mix both modes of detection. It is a mastering compressor. I agree this one has a bit more GUI oaaahs

I think for mixing analog isn't really worth it anymore. For mastering, having one chain that is fixed and just works can be a timesaver and also impress clients lol

This is pretty good to know. Though I always thought manufacturers had some norms about electric levels on the inputs and outputs. Everybody knows what 1 dBu is in Volts (0,775V) so this "should" be no issue. I understand that some companies kinda "play" with these levels to sound maybe superior!? Well, it is a very delicate debate I guess. THX for the video!! I learned something 🙂

White Sea Studio - DON'T become more 'chill.' Must be a fellow American - who wants you what, asleep? You've never been so energetic it's annoying. I would immediately speak to the manufacturer about the input transformer as it relates to 'pickiness' of desired level. I'd love to hear what their thoughts are. Finally, what do you mean, "way the youtube algorithm" is you hint darkly, not allowing you to share more? All the best,

I'm very impressed that it's not aliasing... I've seen some cool results with machine learning lately.... Non-linearities.... And somehow getting really close to some cool analog stuff... But the method is totally different than impulse responses... I could see it not being accurate in the right way to know that still doing something new that's kind of exciting and different than normal algorithmic stuff... Obviously you can't use this to clone your hardware!!! But there's something going on that's cool and this plugin, I think... And there's some other machine learning stuff that's more accurate than this... at least to my ears. Like I really like some of the Tonex captures... It can really feel like you're playing a good app with all the dynamics.... Edge of breakup stuff.... Amp like. I'm wondering if a machine learning could get better for this type of application too. One thing I do like about this plugin is how tweakable it is... Like you can change all the parameters afterwards. And if it's not aliasing.... Somebody could find some use with a plugin like this. Especially if it really is capturing some of those analog like idiosyncrasies. I think it's worth investigating.

The heritage audio sounded a little bit brighter on the highend while the neve sounds a little flatter on the highend that makes it sound slightly more deepened.. I would say that for the highend the heritage has 0.0000000000001% more while for the lowend the neve has 0.000000000000000001% more. I would say heritage was better above 600hz neve was better below 500hz.

Love the videos. Can you please show an example where 0.5db of gain makes such a difference like you said in analog gear. From using mostly digital I can't imagine 0.5db making such a difference that it's drastic so would love for you to show us exactly what you mean! Thanks 🙏

Hi, thirst I would like to thank you for you high value contents and honest opinions ! I really do enjoy most of your videos. I would like to take an advise from you : I want to buy a microphone for rap vocals and want to know what you think about the AKG C314 ? Home studio context. My budget is around 600 euros. Not satisfied about my Shure sm7b… I even prefer using my AT2020. Thanks a lot

This is well known phenomena with transformers and tubes, they usually have poor low level signal handling and are usually designed for higher signal levels, but not too loud so you don't start to saturate the transformers nor clip the tubes... unless that's what you want. And that's an overall great point, that analog domains and digital domains work in different rules. Thus they're called "domains"... Analog gear wants to work in certain window and it's a wonderful thing if you can run them at proper levels from your interface. And that's why it's important to know that if my reference level is such and such, what does 0dBFS or -6dBFS actually mean in dBU etc. :) And with all the "analog modelling" plugins ,this starts to creep into digital domain as well, since the models have been tweaked to work in certain window, as the originals they try to imitate... Always read the manual, always try to learn it.

You need to listen to the bass and the kick, there is where the difference is noticeable. On the first example it had a lot of air, on the third one sounded the worst, compressed and choppy.

Actually the unit is capable of +20db going on, which is quite a lot but if that's not enough for you, you may have to work around that for some more headroom, sure.
