I’ve been catching up on your series. I found you about two weeks ago, and have binged through all the catamaran build episodes. Great stuff. Pro tip: when making router templates (like the one for the transom hatch, the doors, etc) - it is worth thinking about where the bit is going to go if the router skips away from you. In this case, I would be nervous that the bit would skip outward into the transom; I would recommend making the template a frame instead, so that if it messes up, it messes up in the waste piece. Bonus : the template is actual size, you don’t need to go through the mental gymnastics of shrinking it down by the diameter of the router bit. Looking forward to following the rest of the build!

14:20 I remember this episode and thinking that Jessica didn’t quite appreciate the humour at that point in time. Also…you guys are building a boat from scratch, which is going to be hull #2 I believe. On top of that, you want to build the dagger board channels yourself because you wanted a project that would be a challenge. This is why I enjoy this channel so much. You folks are just amazing.

Seeing the poultry and egg collection reminds of growing up. We had ducks, geese, turkeys, chickens, rabbits and a couple flamingos thrown in. Also two britney spaniels, a chiwawa and a black lab. Being the youngest I had the daily feeding duty. But I didn't have to clean the cages. 😁 Great vlog this week!

It was a really fun experience, leading that side life for two weeks. 😀 We also had the option of staying in the house, but bc Matt would be doing glassing projects which required the heaters to stay on until 11 pm, it didn't make sense to keep driving back and forth.

When using a pattern as a fence for my router, I have found that mounting the pattern to the fixed side rather than the waste side is a more stable work surface thus leaving a finished edge (hot glue works well for attaching the fence/pattern). The router can be run inside the fence or, using a collet on the tool, on top of the pattern.

Ditto, I was just thinking about how best to describe the process. Grateful that you saved me from the mental gymnastics! One other thing that I was going to say is that there’s no need for the cutting jig to be that thick. A thinner one would likely allow sufficient cut depth to penetrate fully with the router. When using a template guide on a routers always use a template of the thinest possible to suit the length of the tubular part of the template guide normally around 5mm length so make template's 5mm thick and also add a small piece of template to the base of router with double sided tape so as to stop router from cuting out of square to panels all cuts will be 90⁰.

You could make one mold for both of your center boards out of wiggle board. It's a flexible plywood especially made for bending. It would work perfectly to form the shape you need with screwed and glued in bracing on the outside. You can also make the mold out of 1/4 inch hard wood strips like they make cedar strip kayaks and canoes out of. In this way, you will get a perfect job depending on how good you make your mold. The mold will be good for each half of each center board, 4 in total. Personally, I'd make them out of carbon fiber because of the forces on them. They would certainly last longer under that high stress in carbon fiber than fiberglass. You can also vacuum bag the process to make it even better. Tip, you want to apply thin layers of reason to prevent cracking on each layer of either carbon fiber or fiberglass. Another tip; It might be a good idea to put center board guides in to prevent banging and to make it easy to move them up and down. I believe that you can use rollers but there are thin strips that you can also use. I'm not sure of the best way but gel coat against gel coat isn't the best. There is a much better way that I've heard about but haven't seen. This KZbin video talks about it a little. They mention that they used bearings. Not quite sure what that looks like. Smaller catamarans and other club racing boats use thin strips inside the trunk.

The best tool for cutting out hatches is an angel-grinder with a diamond cutting wheel, and a jigsaw with a diamond blade for the corners.

It cuts great, but not at 90 degrees to the surface. The router makes perfectly vertical sides.

@@MJSailing I know what you mean, but a diamond cutting wheel cuts so easily through the fiberglass, and with a little bit of practice you will get a good feel for the angles. You will get perfect cuts almost every time, because it’s very easy to follow the lines free-handed. The cutting wheel doesn’t want to stray out to the sides. I worked in a boat factory for 3 years. 3 days a week I was cutting parts and doing cutouts for hatches. It didn’t take much time to build confidence handling the air driven cutting wheel with dust collection. We did complex shapes and angels, especially on steering consoles that had to be glued in with almost invisible seams. It works a lot better then you might think. A router bit has a tendency to wander of, and it is hard to follow the template.

So, I just watched you cutting that access panel and have some thoughts: Mark, cut and route 12mm MDF templates so that you’re cutting inside, not outside. Fix template on outside. Plunge 4 registration holes with the router to get perpendicular penetrations. Carefully finish off these holes with a drill and mount the other template internally, using the holes to register the template. This should produce an accurate cut within 2-3mm accuracy between the inside and out.

Will you gelcoat finish the head and shower areas or just use a waterproof paint or red guard liquid membrane coating in the "frequently wet areas" ? PS Matt.. on those hatches you'll do better to cut only about the depth of plunge cutting bit's diameter at first using your template, then drill thru around the corners in 2 or more places and at the ends of straight cuts. In that fashion, you'll be able to use the jigsaw and following the nice straight groove from router you've already made, get a clean, small kerf cut all the way through hull without chipping and tearing finished areas.

The screws do not make it all the way through the hull, just about 1/4" into the foam. We then fill them later with a thickened resin and the surface will get faired over. 🙂

Through Alum. or wood I always ran routers in a clockwise direction. The bit looked like it was two to three times too small.

Clockwise is for inside cuts when going within a template and outside is counterclockwise. The bit was the smallest cut line I could get. I didn't want to have to remake the edge with a larger bit. But in the end, I had to anyway, so it would have been easier to just use a 3/16 - 4mm bit anyway.
