New Year's Eve 1999, I worked in accounting and had a 2 month old baby. We were told that there were going to be computer glitches because of the date. Something to the effect that the systems were going to recognize 00 as 1900 and not 2000. And as such, systems would crash and all the lights would go out, etc. I dressed up, went to a New Year's Eve party, danced to Prince's 1999, and waited for the bottom to drop. I was literally waiting for all the power to go out at midnight. And when nothing happened, it was so anticlimactic!!

Me and my man at the time, brought in 2K dancing and drinking. I don't know too many people who were actually scared. 2012 kind of went down the same way.

I was 9 years old and quietly anxious about Y2K. I watched one too many made for TV conspiracy documentaries about Y2K (as well as the Bermuda triangle and Bigfoot) and I was shook. I was mildly waiting for the world to end when midnight rolled around, but nothing happened, and that was the first time I realized I will survive all my fears, worries, and anxieties.

Same lol 9 years old waiting for the while world to end, scared....... And nothing happened...... Then they tried to revamp the scare with the Mayan calendar thing..... Had surgery and went about my business in Dec 2012 🤣 I am not phased by doomsday stories anymore. We've lived through too many

Omg, YESSSSS!!!! I was 10 years old, and in the 6th grade. I remember secretly being SOOOOO scared, because (IDK IF MY PARENTS WERE LISTENING TO THE RADIO, OR SOME TV PROGRAM/NEWS) IDK…..BUTT- I remember whatever it was, was saying at midnight that night, it would be basically the devil knocking on our front doors and taking over… So obviously me being a child I took it as the actual devil. I remember staying up on New Year’s so scared and not even able to, tell anybody why. Lol SMH.

My Italian-American mother remembers that Y2K affected the nursing home that she was working at majorly. They had to catalogue and save all the mostly black and ethnic white residents’ medical information. This whole process was protested by the white owners of the nursing home. It was only at the mass protesting of the black residents and the support of black staff (although I should note that the majority of the black staff were in the kitchen and custodial, so they didn’t have that much power) this was in New Jersey

New Year’s was one of the very few holidays I could celebrate growing up, so I’ve always looked forward to it. In 1999, I was in my teens, and my family was pretty chill that day despite my mom being heavy into the conspiracy theories. I remembered just having faith that the computer scientists and other professionals would be able to handle it. This year, I am going to do the usual with loved ones: drink sparkling wine, make a charcuterie board and have other appetizers and homemade candies/tiny desserts. On NYD, will eat some black eyed peas, greens, cornbread, and fried chicken.

I was the only one who didn't believe the Y2K bug in my family and I was the only one into computers in my family so that gave me that confidence but I was also very aware what country I lived in and if anything would've ever went down they wouldn't tell us ever it would've just happened but I can admit I did pause for a minute once midnight hit just in case and then I bragged afterwards 😂 I wasn't worried but you know when this country says look over here it's usually doing something over that way so I was still ready for anything to happen and was relieved when nothing happened regardless of being right or wrong 😌

That dress (or long sweater?) looks aMAZing on you! The idea of debts being collected on new year is so weird to me… I know it’s less special in England but in Scotland it’s still bigger than Christmas. And it was WAY bigger than Christmas for a very long time. I’m at least glad that once black people were freed, new years was able to become special rather than an object of dread. As to my y2k, my only indication something was up was my dad insisted the computer and the VCRs were completely unplugged. Otherwise it seemed like a regular, albeit larger than normal, new year’s party to me. I played hide and seek with other kids from the neighbourhood while the adults counted down. It’d be fun if we’d started Seeking after the adults finished counting down, but I don’t recall.
