My quilt top is done 🎉 Oh Cathy what a surprise to get a shout out 😮 It’s made my day 🥳 I’ve even started creating leaders and enders to make another, this time using blue shirts, but the white squares aren’t plain white - they have a mainly white background with a tiny pattern (lots of men’s shirts have a tiny pattern) I can’t wait to see how this one turns out 🤔 Now I’m going to watch the video 👍🇬🇧

Hi Cathy. I'm a beginner quilter and a social media introvert. I've been watching your videos from (almost) the beginning, but am only just now liking or posting anything... (I think it's called lurking? 🙃). I'm so inspired by your channel that I've decided to come out from behind the curtain. Not that I'm a wizard or anything. I just like the expression so much better than "out of the woodwork", don't you? I'd rather be thought a wizard than and insect! But I digress. Your channel is superior! Thank you! I'm in love with the idea of quilting with men's shirts and have already amassed a fairly hefty collection. (The value compared to quilt shops is addictive!) But I'm determined to finish my WIPs before cutting into one. (How is it that as a beginner I already have so many WIPs?) I also admire everything about your relaxed style, your humor, your melodic voice, your artistic expression, your love of order in the chaos, your excellent teaching that comes directly from your personal process, your sense of color, your husband's brillant editing.... Okay, maybe this is why I don't post. I don't know how to stop! 🤐 Is there a word limit on these things? Anyway, going now.... to scroll through your videos and "Like" each and every one, because I certainly have! Just slow on the draw as to the importance of these things.... I do have ONE BURNING QUESTION before I go: Do you pass on all the beautiful cotton shirts out there that contain 2% spandex? So hard to resist.... Can I use a fusible interfacting to stablize perhaps? Maybe you have a FAQs list somewhere? (Oops, that was three questions🙄). Looking forward to your next one! 💜💜💜

So glad to hear that, Jennifer. I finally broke down and bought a gorgeous men's floral shirt that had that tad bit of spandex in it. I just couldn't pass it up, so I decided that it would just be my "experiment" shirt. Now I won't worry about using it!@@jennjennedington279

Laura, first let me say that lurkers are 100% allowed, and just you being here and watching (even without liking or commenting) is wonderful and helpful and contributes to the community of viewers on my channel! 😊👍🏻 And thank you, before I forget, for watching all this time and being a faithful viewer--it's no small thing, to me. ❤️ I DO, in fact, like "out from behind the curtain" better than "out of the woodwork" for exactly the reason you named! Maybe you've just been patiently "waiting in the wings" for your exact time to come on stage--which was now! THANK YOU for your effusive praise--I'm humbled and honored. Truly. To answer your question, I sometimes pass on cotton/spandex and sometimes I just get them and use them as if they are 100% cotton! It really just depends--if it is just the slightest percentage (3 or less) or if I just LOVE the fabric (color or print) then I will get it! I 100% agree with Jennifer--don't pull or tug it when you sew--and if you pin, be careful not to stretch it as you pin. I have definitely used these fabrics and not had any problems at all. Oh and I wouldn't use fusible interfacing or stabilizer, besides the fact that it isn't needed, I think it would add unnecessary thickness. 🤓 Btw, thank you for joining the other commenters and adding your voice. It's a good one and I'm glad you're here! 🥰

I made a penny quilt with a whole fat quarter bundle of 25 fat quarters and white strips cut from yardage. I pinned every intersection of every strip and every row and every block. But very scrappy when I sewed strips together. Ended up being a queen size quilt. Took me several years because it was a fill in project between other project or when I got bored working on another.

My favorite quilt is a nine patch quilt. The sashing is white with a tan cornerstone. The nine patches has a light blue center. The rest of the pieces are scrappy but the whole quilt has a total blue look because I had so many blue shirts! I like the idea of making a blue and white quilt! While I watched this video, I thought Id really like to make a tan and beige quilt! Collecting shirts for a tan quilt will be a real challenge.

I’m slowly working on my start to finish hand pieced postage stamp quilt. It’s rainbow colors/white checkered. By the time I’m done it will have 1700+ 1 inch squares. It’s going on 2 years since I started it, probably take another 4 to finish it. Since I first started quilting 20+ years ago, I’ve always wanted to do a postage stamp. It took me 2 months to prep to get started, since I had none of the tools for hand piecing. Teaching myself to hand sew has been awesome.

❤Another beautiful, inspiring and informative video Cathy! Gotta love the classics. Blue and white quilts have always had a special place in my heart as well. My next two color project will be a red and white “red work” quilt. I wish my embroidery skills were better, but I supply they will be by the end of the project. This has been my “Mount Everest” project for decades, and I’ve always used my lack of embroidery skill as my excuse to postpone it. Next year I intend to begin climbing that “mountain”. I haven’t decided whether to go classic or Christmas themed yet, but in January I’ll begin to paw through my stash and nail down a direction. Wish me luck! 🤞🏼😄🤞🏼

I LOVE blue and white quilts! I recently made a king size for our bed. Four patches in blues with white sashing and blue cornerstones. All the blocks finished at two inches. It’s very scrappy-about 40 fabrics, including 6-7 shirts. The colors ranged from almost gray to periwinkle to blue green and everything in between. Every shade of blue you can imagine. I think I would cut that large 4 patch into thirds both ways, turn the blocks and make a split 4-patch block. You'd still have large enough pieces of the butterflies that you don't lose the pattern. You can do split nine patch quilts too and get excellent scrappy look with a controlled set of colors. On the postage stamp quilt take the strips and sew the ends together to form a circle. Then randomly rip open one of the seams so the strip colors fall in a different order top to bottom. My favorite is the muted blue-grey chambray colors with the dark navy...very fresh country or beachy feel to that color way. You've given us all lots of inspiration.

How timely! I’ve been sewing up some remnant Kaffe fabrics into checkerboards for zip pouches and small pillows. As a skill experiment, I’ve been using the “webbing” method of joining lots of squares. There are some very good videos out, and it certainly is speedy. Some folks get good enough to skip pressing and nesting altogether. Very fun to try. Also, I too have some special fabrics that present best as large squares. And yes, those errant joints show. I’ve settled on using a lattice pattern instead, and I like the look of non-directional fabrics on point with the lattice. Thanks for your always-useful content.

@@TheCatBirdQuilts personally I like to use orphan blocks in the back of quilts. Perhaps the back of your next blue quilt.

I wish we in the UK had access to as many mens shirts, especially in large sizes, as you do in the US. But I have kept all my sons' and dad's shirts for future quilt projects. By the way, Cathy, I love that gingham quilt hanging up behind you. ❤ 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Fiona, I wish you had that too, although that would mean that you all would have the overbuying and excess that we have here in the US, and I promise you that it is not *really* what you want. You are so smart for keeping the shirts from the men in your life--I can think of a few my husband's shirts from years past that would have made amazing quilting fabric! Alas. And thank you--it is the quilt from the "Your First Quilt" video series I did last year! ❤️🤓

It could be interesting to mix large one fabric blocks, with postage stamp blocks. The tiny squares would look almost like a print fabric

I'm like you about random ! As I like order too, when I do random It must be perfectly random 😂
@jennjennedington279
@jennjennedington279 8 ай бұрын
Oh my gosh yes that is the term I have been looking for: PERFECTLY RANDOM. It was my aim to do a “pull from the bag random” And thought that since I had a harmonious value of colors and low volume that I could actually do it! Reach and sew. Nope. I fussed and fussed with it. And thus it is not finished. I took all the “easy” out of the process. But I’ll like it.

@jennjennedington279 and THAT is why I don't do random---I have the EXACT same experience. Trying to do flippant random steals my joy. Truly. It is honestly more joy-inducing to just put the dang pieces where I want them to go! 😂

Thank you for sharing these great blue and whites! I'd love to know how you would go about 'quilting' these. All I really know how to do is either a stitch-in--the-ditch or a wave with my walking foot. What are the various ways to quilt the 1" squares quilt without taking away from the beauty and calmness that these provide? Thanks!

Caroline, I'll be honest with you, the actual "quilting" part is my biggest weakness---there are others with so much more experience and skill and "eyes" for quilting than me! But I will say, I did a free-motion quilting on a postage stamp quilt (it was a baby quilt, so I could manage it) and I simply did cursive "e's" (also known as loops) with each "e" in each tiny square. And then on the next row, I did them upside down---and it made a really lovely pattern that was scaled properly for the size and didn't detract from the tiny piecing. If you follow me on IG, I think I have a photo of it! Or you can watch this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pmXafWN5nZiBaZYsi=Kc53CVJoniT2xg33 where I talk about that baby quilt and the quilting!

Question: Do you only use men’s cotton shirts?
@TheCatBirdQuilts
@TheCatBirdQuilts 4 ай бұрын
For the most part, yes. If I find a cotton-poly blend that I just LOVE, sometimes I'll go ahead and get it, but once I start using it, I remember why I don't really like them for quilting! 😂
