The painter Jack Whitten published a book full of journal entries called "Notes from the Woodshed." They're full of his insights on the creative process, and his ideology as a painter and sculptor.
The process of painters has always heavily influenced my beat making practice -- the focus on the materials you're using, shaping matter, building the work piece by piece, and the constant process of shaping and forming until something reveals itself.
0:00 - 0:35 - intro
0:35 - 1:19 - first beat sketch
1:20 - 2:59 - second beat sketch
3:00 - 5:51- third beat sketch
5:52 - 6:32 - outro
beat making, painting: same thing.

"In the same way that painting, or looking at paintings, makes you see the world in a different way, listening to interestingly arranged sounds makes you hear differently." - Walter Murch Great video Eddie

Walter Murch is one of my favorite editors. I actually met him about 5 years ago, which was such an honor. I love the way he thinks about art and time and everything. Thanks for watching the video.

Nice Eddie, as always, it is good to remember that music is a discipline within art, we tend to forget with so much technology, it is good to remember how in the 60s painting and jazz were closely linked. Like Franz Kline the jazz painter ;)

Probably your best video till date - the energy is different. That second beat is ❤ Also, great topic - I'm working on a beat/song inspired by a quasi real character from our modern history that we grew up on...Her story really inspires music - through literature and oral legends. Gotta love this cross medium idea pollination. Rad.

much appreciated. a great way to reach new sounds is to allow unlikely influences. so many of us are inspired by the same things, caught in the same echo-chambers of social media content, etc. i may be stepping away from traditional 'beat making' for a while just so i can search for something new. i can't wait to hear what new music you cook up based on this person and they're story. keep me updated!

I hope you enjoy it. He's an interesting guy with a very dedicated art process. I didn't go into details in this video, but some of his ideas on the function of art and the process of making it are beneficial to a wide range of artists. let me know what you think when u get it!

@@eddieleonard6925 Will do sir! I did not know about Jack. Spent some time watching a few interviews. I've entered into a mind space where I've been "caring" less about the music and more about the process and what it means to me as a creative and as a human. I feel like the simple act of hitting some pads changed me. It's really easy to get lost in what everyone else is doing. So I've been craving for different outlooks on art and what it means for different artists, different areas of expression. This video dropped in the right time! And from what jack says in interviews, it sort of challenged my perception of sound and how it compares to his work with paint and acrylic. Colors, Texture as a material, composition, interaction. Really nice! Managed to snag a copy from a library in Paris. A bit pricey but I think it's gonna be a delight!
