I just love how you slowly leaf through the pages of a book, giving us a real feel for the content. At 73, I did have pen pals back in the day. I loved receiving and responding to them. And back then , it was so easy to find beautiful little boxes of stationery with envelopes at Woolworths. There were so many florals and pretty designs. I even loved getting a box of stationery under the Christmas tree! Opening my little desk drawer and deciding which one to use felt so luxurious. Oh , those simpler times, when little things seemed so special. Thanks for taking me down memory lane.

I keep cards and punch a hole in the corner and thread a string through the hole. I started doing that and putting the collection on the doors of the house(inside) after Bob and I got married and his uncle died. It was my first and last memory of Uncle Press Patterson. Now I don’t get more than 5 cards in a year. My first Pen-Pal was William Bernard Poe. We wrote for 3 years and we stopped when I was 11 and he was 13. He became an editor for Council on Foundation in Washington, DC. I memorized poems from Poe, Edgar Allan, that is, in 2nd grade because I loved him. He died a year before I married.

@@thetartantopiary We all have loss in life. As a retired chaplain, I am always aware of how without Poe, I would be a child without a childhood friend and poetry! Poe is fun bedtime reading for a murder mystery writer I became! I am older. People who are older lose friends and relatives every year. I think people who lose pregnancies and babies have a harder time with all loss. We have lost part of the future. When I heard the story of you and Daniel, I realized how Bill Poe and his loss was so much bigger than I realized. The what if of imagination is what we need for a chaise lounge or a new floor! I will never have teenage foreign exchange students again!

I was surprised that most of your favorite KZbin channels are also my favorites. Rajiv’s topics make me happy as many of his interests are close to mine…of course, his musical talents are on another planet compared to my lack of musical abilities. Dan is amazing on the progress he’s made in such a short amount of time…AMAZING. I look forward to seeing your new book choice each Friday. Thank you.

Isn't Kime wonderful (!!!). He created exactly the sort of environments in which I have always aspired to live. I'll probably never "get" there, but I have a lot of fun trying. As for my other favorite KZbin channels... I'd recommend "Homeworthy" and "Hunt & Gather." For you southerners, Hunt & Gather is filmed in a wonderful antique shop in Raleigh, NC, and it's well worth a trip inside if you're ever in the area. Cheers, everyone... and thanks to you, Mary, for all of your wonderful efforts.

Mary…those flower arrangements were gorgeous…..it reminded me….when I got married the first time in 1973…NOBODY WOULD MAKE MY BOUQUET…..because I wanted daisies and yellow roses…..back then florists only made solid white bouquets…..I had to drive 50 miles to get a small florist to make them as long as I PROMISED not to tell who made them….life is so funny…..thank you for a lovely video….your voice just calms me down so much…hugs carolyn from Columbus GA

I bought my first wonderful home decoration magazine when I was about 14, and got told off by my mom for spending my pocket money on something so expensive (and useless). I guess I remained disobedient and a spendthrift, because here I am, fifty years later, surrounded by decoration and gardening magazines and books! Thanks from Namibia for the beautiful books you share with us.

I appreciate you sharing that story. In a way it reminds me of one of my aunts. She was raised during the depression and spending money on magazines with something she viewed as “useless” also. I’m glad you saw the magazine as a form of education through text as well as beautiful photography and also appreciating it as a form of enjoyment. Thank you for your kind message.

I love your channel! I grew up around a family ( old California) who relished the finer things in their homes, yet staying humble throughout. My great grandparent’s home is a museum in the Bay Area , a Queen Anne Victorian mansion built in 1850 and holds many of the furnishings to this day. I am drawn to the southern designers you have shared plus my own heritage…..a touch of California pioneers. 😊 Thank you so much again for your wonderful videos. The narration and videos are so calming. ❤

Hello Mary! I enjoyed another interesting review! The tulip arrangement is beautiful! I usually poke a small hole in a few of them right underneath the head of the flower to allow better water absorption and sometimes it helps them to stand up a little straighter. However, I loved how you effortlessly and beautifully designed the handheld bouquets! Your daughter is lucky to have such a talented Mother! Have a wonderful day and I will see you in the next one! Hi to Daniel too! Hugs :)

The channel House & Garden has a nice variety of videos including one on Robert Kime: At home with legendary decorator Robert Kime. The channel has an amazing array of modern English inspired designers in their homes: Carlos Garcia, Nina Campbell, Rita Konig, James Mackie, Ben Pentreath, Emma Burns, and so many more decorators, shop owners, fabric designers, and bon vivants. Cabana Magazine is another channel with good interior design videos including another Kime interview titled Cabana Presents: Portrait of a Home with Robert Kime

Another interesting book, it peaked my interest that the forward was written by king Charles 3rd. My home country even though I've been in America since 1975. It's always good to see that some decorators and designers keep the character of an older home even doing the updates. I also subscribe to Nicholas fairford I enjoy his videos and little dog Sophie and when he visits the historic homes and has afternoon tea at one of the beautiful hotels in Edinburgh. Mary, I found it very interesting that you also watch Stephanie on The Chateau Diaries, and also Dan The Man Gardner and Chef extraordinaire who is rebuilding a Chateau from the burned out shell. I seriously have my doubts on that, because of the compromised structure of the existing walls. Personally I think it should have been a complete tear down. I have been watching Steph since day 1 of her vlogs and Dan's also. Have you seen her Travels in Europe series with one of her best friends from Oxford - Oliver? It takes you through some of the grandest chateaus and museums in Europe. I am so pleased that she has become engaged to Philip. She was formally involved with both Michael Potts and her other school chum and property owner that won't show his face. I love watching every episode of hers. There are a few spin offs of others such as Dan and Marie Wiiks, Michael Potts (photography) and a few others. The Chapel is coming along in it's restoration. I would have thought they were going to do more outside structurally than just pour cement around the footings... I am not familiar with the Scottish Tea guy or the other channel you watch. I do like Quintessence, and Homeworthy that goes into the homes of I.D. professionals. .In review of Robert Kimes book, I found that I really did not care for the aesthetics as much, and found the furnishings to be humdrum. Maybe because it looks like my home without the palatial backdrops or maybe it's just that I am so jaded in viewing all of the other design vlogs. I did notice in a Martha Stewart home review, something I found "interesting" was that she had painted ladder back interior chairs for use on the porch at the dining table. I am almost, (not quire convinced) tempted to try it on for size. I am doing Spring cleaning, and yard prep work for Spring. Our Azeleas are starting to show and we have a first spring flower today. Blessings on you and yours, Bren - The Golden Isles of Georgia, USA.

I am meeting up with 'Chateau Love' next month, we exchange emails but haven't met. I am friends with Sara & Steve from 'Manor & Maker' who live near me and the regularly take my excess furniture for their chateau. They are due to come pick up my wrought iron garden furniture as no room in the new house. Terry and Ash from Chateau de Lalacelle are taking some excess Louis XV that needs recovering as the are good at everything ! Nice to pass on things to people who then become friends.

Hi Mary , love your channel. I watch & are subscribed to several of the same channels. Take a gander at Beau Chateau. It’s wonderful, interesting & beautiful soft music. It’s about a granddaughter who inherited this French Chateau. She & her American boyfriend are restoring it with the goal to live there & use it as a wedding venue as well as other type of venues. I think you would enjoy it. I also love Brent Hull for giving me so much history around wood molding & trims. You might enjoy him as well. Thanks again.

Hi Mary, I love each book review and your flower arranging etc. and look forward every Friday to a new video! I recommend the youtube channel , “French Vibes. “ It’s a beautiful lifestyle of a family living on the French Riviera. The scenes of the towns along the Mediterranean are breathtaking. Iselya Fortin is an excellent photographer and narrator. I hope you enjoy it. It’s happy, relaxing and a vacation for the senses!

Oh Mary! We have been so busy listing our house for sale, so haven't had a minute to sit and watch your wonderful channel. Well, the house is sold, so now we are trying to find our new home by the coast. Your beautiful video is so calming, full of interest and a welcome distraction. I adored Robert Kime. What an amazing man. I have been searching for this wonderful book. Maybe, just maybe,I will find a copy and use it to inspire our new home. The very warmest regards from England

Thank you for this book review I truly love learning about these wonderful designers which I never had time to study or read about. This one really spoke to me. My home is totally different in style then the designs in this book but it has a feeling that I can’t describe. I love the concept of having treasures that become the design and feel of a home. Yes I too feel like your channel is like we are all pen pals. I too watch all the you tube channels you mentioned my first channel to follow was Stephanie’s it will always be my first you tube love. I bought a star( in the chapel) in memory of my mother and of my uncle . His name was Joseph . I think you may like How to renovate a chateau ( without killing your partner), and Hill House Vintage, lastly is a lovely , peaceful channel with a Dutch lady living in Burgundy named Marloes her channel is French Country Life. We recently were on a road trip and I saw the sign Wilmington NC I smiled and said to my husband that’s where Mary lives! Your Pen Pal, Mary ( we share the same name)

I went to my first auction at the age of 8 and bought a small Meissen porcelain fennec which I still have, it's one of my treasures. I paid a few pennies then. That was 60 years ago this year ! As a child I would go door to door asking for donations of objects and clothing that I sold on for charity. Mum washed and ironed the clothes and I cleaned up the objects. There was one ginger jar whose lid was a thick mess of tape and bandages and it was considered unsellable to I took it home, steeped the lid in warm water and under all that was a clean break that I glued back and I still have it on my kitchen shelf. I also have a tiny brass stamp box that I traded, age 5, for a plastic toy ! I got the better deal but even then I knew a good thing ! My grandmother confiscated it and it sat on her mantle until she died and then mum took it back for me. My mum has a small porcelain tea set painted with roses that she bought for my grandmother when whe was 16 and now she is 91 ! When mum passes it will be the only thing I will keep of hers as it meant so much to her. I love this book, as I've said in a past post, Robert Kime is my go to decorator, his style is so comfortable and I do like worn and cracked (matches my personality!! ) I went to his shop before his death hoping to see him but no luck. I now have the catalogue as another treasured possession !

I had three penpals, it was wonderful hearing about other cultures. One was a German boy, one a Swedish girl and the third was a Finnish girl. We exchanged stamps and coins and postcards. So sad that this is no longer a thing and I don't mean social media but the expectation of a letter or card or gift was wonderful. We had a lovely postman and he always commented on the stamps and took time to chat.

Hi Mary, what are the chances?! I also follow the five channels you mentioned in your video! Chateau Diaries is fascinating since she purchased the chateau so long ago when she was only 29. I’m so happy for her and Philip, they are so well suited for each other, despite the age difference. I’m loosing interest in Dan’s channel now that his marriage has fallen apart, for a while I had hopes it would work out. Three other channels I like are Dainty Diaries, Kevin Lee Jacobs, and The Elliott Homestead. Your voice is so soothing, and I love your interactions with your hubby! Keep up the excellent videos. ❤

I’m also subscribed to Nicholas Fairford and Chateau Diaries. Stephanie makes everyone feel like they’re family. I love seeing all the renovations, especially the chapel and hope she and Phillip christen it with their wedding. She makes every video a joy to watch and she’s a great informative host. Your channel is very valuable to me with your book reviews. So very helpful in deciding whether or not to purchase a book, since many don’t give previews on Amazon. I’m very disappointed that I can’t buy Robert Kime’s book since it’s $400. I didn’t see another option. 😕 Thank you again for all the great decorating book reviews.

I would just like to add one video I subscribe to and thoroughly enjoy, “Escape to the Dream, Restoring the Chateau” It follows a family who bought a terribly run down, large chateau in the North of France. They have spent the last 2 1/2 years restoring it and they’re not done yet! The daily hard work is eye watering, but the results are astonishing as the Versailles style rooms are revealed. The dream is Terry’s, his imagination and talent for finding treasures in antique shops are incredible. His carpentry, electrical and upholstery skills are what propel his partner and his mother along. The fact that they sold everything they had in the North of England and moved to France to follow Terry’s dream is astonishing. His enthusiasm and their love of what they are all doing makes you cheer them along.

Oh, how I miss the days of Pen Pals.....I had a few.....Every other month My Mom and I would go to the little card/ stationary shop in town.....I LOVED picking out a couple of new boxes of beautifully scented stationary with matching envelopes....and a new pretty pen to add to my collection.....my heart still gets that little leap in a beat thinking and remembering the scent that wafted of out of my desk drawer where I kept my beloved stationary each time it was opened.....and the giddiness when a new letter from one of my pen pals was found on my desk when I came in from school or weekend activities .....I cherished my letter writing time....I'd put on the radio or pop in a tape to listen to music while I wrote......it was sad when one by one we dwindled in our written correspondence as we grew older and life took over.....now we text eachother every so often, usually holidays or birthdays.........spread all over the country and other parts of the world......I think a new movement should be pushed to renew the ART of written letters......there is just no art form in texting, is there?......✌️💜💋
