The Fifth Estate

7 жыл бұрын

He was only five years old when his adoptive parents decided they didn't want him anymore … so they gave him away to a complete stranger - on the Internet. In a fifth estate investigation called “A Boy Named Moses,” Gillian Findlay looks at the unregulated practice of what is euphemistically called “rehoming.”
“It's a very comforting way of saying trafficking in children,” says Mary Ellen Turpel Lafonde, British Columbia’s Children Advocate.
Moses was adopted from an orphanage in Liberia by a couple from British Columbia, but soon they found him too troublesome to keep. They found Internet chat rooms and forums where people, like themselves, posted ads about adoptions gone wrong.
They quickly found a willing taker in Texas and Moses’ adoptive father dropped him off at a Houston hotel with a stranger, a woman they had never met in person before.
When the authorities discovered what had happened, Moses was eventually returned to British Columbia, but the couple that used Internet to give him away were never charged. The BC Ministry of Child and Family Development refused to discuss the case.
Moses is now a thriving and happy 13-year-old, living with a B.C. couple who have taken in many children who have suffered through failed adoptions.
“It’s unbelievable anyone could be that inhumane… with a little boy,” says Cathy Gilbert, his new adoptive mother.

I have two adult children, one natural child and one I adopted when I married her mother. They are both my children, and i could never abandon either one. The girl I adopted just turned 30, ive been divorced from her mother since 2004 and I still treat her as my own. If I give money to one, I give to the other. Leaving either of them with a stranger would have been out of the question. once you adopt a child, that child belongs to you and you dont turn your back on that child.

I agree with you. But once upon a time "until death do us part" meant just that and you didn't divorce or abandon your spouse. These days we think it is better to part and start over again if living together just doesn't work. And there are people who truly believe that what applies to divorce should also apply to adoption. You made a contract and if it doesn't work out... There are even people who think the same applies to natural children. Those people believe it is better to give the kid a new home then to make themselves and/or the kids unhappy by holding on just because society expects them to. There are of course a lot of people who give up without even trying. But then the same applies to people getting a divorce.

My dad isn't my biological dad and he never adopted me but from the moment he and my mum got together, I was his daughter. He's never treated me any different from my little sister and I know he loves me every bit the same as he does her. We might not be related by blood but that's not the important part of parenthood.

Steven Hair I applaud you & I don't know your specific family situation. However, for some, race can make a massive difference to how they treat a person. Jenny Jerome Race plays a part....people find it harder to consider a child to be their "own" if they look totally different, have an entirely different culture, speak a different language, etc. A kid who somewhat resembles you will, of course, be easier to consider as your own.

At least they take them to the adoption agencies instead of much worse. It's the same reason the US has a federal law that allows a parent to leave a baby at a fire station, police dept or hospital without punishment. The steps to a fire station sure beats a dumpster. But, these adoptive parents should be charged with felony counts of child abuse and abandonment.

I think the agency holds some responsibility. As soon as the parents showed someone the ads for rehoming children and had to drill it in that it was illegal, the agency should have taken Moses from them.

High atop Mt. Virtue Signal, these people think they’re the white saviors of humanity. We see this story so much; privileged white liberals adopting children from other countries, Haiti, China, Congo, Rwanda, Sudan, Liberia, Russia, Ukraine, Romania… on and on and on, only to “rehome” them when the new wears off. There has to be legal punishment.

i have to agree.. and poor moses all he wanted was for someone too love and accept him and even if he was traumatized or had bad behavior -- if you love that child you never should give up on them that is what they did though they didnt give him a chance! how is it someone like me on disability ( barely making ends met ) -- i have always wanted too be a foster parent ( because i can love alot more children this way) but sadly i dont fit the finical means too do this -- but yet some rich people can get a child like moses -- take him in and then just toss him out like he was yesterdays garbage! this makes me sad because i would have loved him and give patience and kindness but this also angers me ( i am boiling inside) its crazy how people like this can get away with it because they have money + power on their side I will forever pray for him and want him too know i love him even though i have never met him. -- i pray for blessings and happiness for him too

I really think his initial adoptive mother had issues of some sort. She projected a lot of wild things onto a very young child until she worked herself up and convinced herself he needed to go. The behavior of the initial adoptive parents probably freaked poor Moses out, which probably freaked them out more. Awful situation...

@ sierrasky913 Exactly. He was scared. No harm in letting him have a knife under his mattress, validating his fears while reassuring his safety.(whether his need for the knife came before or after the mom started getting paranoid?) As for the "gun," considering the kids in the orphanage, I'm sure there was quite a lot if soldier play acting & yelling of "I'm going to kill you!" to "I'm going to kill your whole family!" If the mom had seen Moses make a finger gun she may have inadvertently entered a "game" by yelling, "What are you doing, trying to kill me?" & Moses complied with, "I'm going to kill your whole family!" Thinking he's fitting into the family.

I personally think that it was a good thing that Moses moved on. Staying with a family that didn’t want him, would have been more devastating. I do realize all caps, The parents that adopted in the first place. However I would think the Biological parent in the first place is total blame. That is your child that you gave up on, while still keeping his siblings does more damage.

Terry Melvin well we each have our own opinions. But let’s see he is older only 4 or 5? How was one more mouth to feed and love to give your oldest child, who will get older and could help with siblings more expensive? If you give one up maybe you should have given all up for adoption. If I were put in that boy’s mindset now at the age of 13. I would be thinking my own parents first! If I were an only child and they gave me up, I would better understand they wanted me to have a better life.

It's possible that he did in fact lie to make himself feel more powerful. When I was doing childcare, kids used to tell me outrageous stories of their killing mountain lions and grizzly bears. One school-ager even insisted to me that at another center, they were able to fight each other with knives, getting blood all over the floor. Since I knew the director of that program, I knew for a fact he was lying, but he really sold it with complete conviction. As far as "playing with knives" goes... in some cultures, knives are tools of daily living, and kids play with them like they do any other object in their environment. You just tell them no, and offer a different toy. At least, that's what you do unless you're a naive fundamentalist Rescue Adopter who's prone to see satanic potential in childhood power fantasies.

Bottom line: it isn't "rehoming." That's what you do to a dog. It isn't "adoption disruption" or "adoption dissolution" or "secondary placement." It's abandonment. Because you as a parent are putting your own comfort/needs/convenience/health above your child's. And that child will always know that they were rejected and feel it's their fault.

As a previous fosterchild raised in the system.... The 1st adopted family were manipulative. I can see they were painting a victim mentality and pointing at Moses . they most likely got tired of providing for Moses and realized they couldnt manage him and the 2 other kids. Sadly many foster parents would paint the child to be problematic to get rid of them. Im just happy Moses is safe👍👍👍

You can tell he'll likely do well. He's obviously loved and supported by his family and, having gone through all he did, is most probably an empathetic kid with good coping skills he's had to learn to get as far as he has. I think it was pretty bad that, considering his age (13 and beginning puberty), they told him on camera what happened and I hope that doesn't knock his self esteem down - most kids going through puberty have a self esteem that's pretty fragile even under optimum conditions. It's one time I really hope that was staged and he'd been prepared and told beforehand and counselled. I wish him and his family all the very best and I think he'll grow up to be a good, even magnificent, man.

I don't believe their accusisations, but even if the child was difficult, it doesn't make one bit of a difference. They decide to adopt a child from an unfortunate background, if they don't realise the children might have issues they are too naive to adopt in the first place. They adopted another human being, it's their child now and whatever issues comes with it is now their responsibility to deal with.

One one hand it's terrible that they just gave him away, but if they were going to be such jerks Moses is definitely better off without them. My daughter is adopted, and she's been very difficult at times. Sometimes I'd be at my wit's end trying to help her. We got therapy, together and separately, several times over the years. She has Borderline Personality Disorder, depression, and anxiety. I would never for a minute consider rejecting her! I love her with every breath I take, and no matter what, that will never change. She's the best thing in my life. CHILDREN ARE NOT PUPPIES! You don't just pick out out from the shelter, and then pass it on when it doesn't work out. (I can't believe people do that to dogs, either, but that's a different rant for a different day.) BTW, we have a great relationship with the birth parents, and they are an extended part of our family.

When the interviewer asked how do you know he knew how to use a gun...he stuttered trying to come up with an answer smh a clear sign of deception. Bed wetting and regressing is a clear sign that child was going through something. That man laid it all out what they were putting that child through, and not one thing was done. I'm just glad he was safe in the end.

My mom brought my cousin to live with us when he was 9 and I was 7. He had brought an old wooden box with knifes and he told me he was going to kill us all. I told me mom and years of counseling, psychiatrist, and social workers followed. That same boy my mom raised is now 33, college graduate and works for Disney Animation. I understand the adoptive family's fear/concern but they didn't even give him a chance.

C. V. I doubt the child actually said these things. I think they learned about child soldiers and feared him. They began asking him questions which confused him. Children are parrots they will repeat what their parents said. I do t think they did it purposely I think fear was the cause of it all.

Cindy V. That is great that love & care was able to turn your cousin's life around, may I ask how long it took for him to show progress? It must have been hard for you being surrounded by your cousin's troubles & your cousin needing much of your mother's attention. It is always good to hear about a neglected child saved but unfortunately depending on the level of abuse & how long the child has to endure it for, some adults break that child forever, intervention can help but safety concerns are valid.

Moses is a lovely young man now, his parents did so well, he was very lucky to find love and a family, in the end. So I hope people will stop digging into his past and hurting him, forcing him to remember those painful moments. I understand that it is important, but he should be allowed to leave all that behind and enjoy being loved by his family and allowed to grow up and feel safe. Best wishes Moses and his nice family, well done!

This was very an enlightening Program, was there any relationship of racial division in the process of rehoming Children ? Are there any penalties for the people who engage in this practice. Human Beings are not Animals and should not be treated as such, even animals have feelings and memory recall. I am happy to see that Moses has a new caring Family with a Heart.
