Plus one for road trips. There is nothing better than seeing the countryside, architecture and culture change as you just go along on your merry way. I'm fortunate enough to live in the UK, so one of the things I love doing is finishing work early, getting in the (prepacked) car and going for a long drive with my partner, with just the ferry tickets booked in advance and a vague idea of where we want to go and how to get there. Get to a place, find a camp site, pitch the tent and go and explore. Stay for a night, or if you like it, stay for two. Or maybe three. Most recent road trip was in August, when we ended up driving all the way to Montenegro and back again (12 countries in total). This was maybe our 8th such trip, we try and visit new places each time. In 2021 we toured Scotland. I'm ashamed to say that it was the first time we had done this (considering I'm originally from Scotland). It wasn't quite the NC500, as we veered off course through the Cairngorms to visit family, then to Orkney, up to the far north west then Skye and all bits in between. It was the only time that I have felt myself close to tears whilst driving, due to the awe inspiring surroundings.

And as for your feelings of almost crying while admiring the drives in Scotland, we are 100% right there with you! In fact, we DID cry many moments during the trip - just from gratitude and amazement at our surroundings. Scotland is an absolute fairytale.

Next time, climb Calton hill at the back of your hotel in Waterloo place - your stop in Edinburgh. It's not much of a climb, but it affords a great view of the castle, Arthur's seat, and much of the city, and there is a fabulous structure at the top - I won't give away what it is. Blackford hill is also a modest climb, with views again of course, and the Hermitage at the back of the hill is a beautiful fairly wild wood to walk through near the heart of the city. I'm sure you'd appreciate all of that!

If you get a return trip, visit the city of Dunfermline! Scotlands first capital and the birthplace of kings, queens and saints. It’s also the resting place of Robert Bruce. Wonderful history, abbey and palace! 👍

You were very lucky with the weather, but when it's good there are wonderful things to see. Skye, Portree is the Gateway to the Islands on the west coast.

Hi! The camera we currently use is the Fujifilm Xh2s! However, when we first started it was the Canon. If you are just starting we would suggest the canon g7x mark iii first! However if you’re ready to make the jump into a more professional camera - we can’t speak highly enough about this Fujifilm, it’s AMAZING!
