I was the youngest person in the production office, 4th assistant or production runner which was really "dogs body" who did coffee and tea and anything else, but also the call sheets, which I had to deliver to all dutch Authorities and the film departments like, catering and costume which needed to know the numbers of extras involved. The job also photo records and getting Joe Levine his water, I liked him very much as he treated me very well. My uncle and me (who was in charge of the German vehicles of "Bapty and co") (not Charles Man who was a dear chap who did the allied stuff ) thought that Edward Fox did one of the finest examples of acting at that time, this was superb and done naturally, how lovely was that.

My dad's cousin, Delford W Barker, died in this operation. Only 19 years old. He was a member of the 401st Glider Infantry, 101st Airborne Division. While trenching in,enemy machine gun fire shot him through the neck. They recovered his body in 1977. He died near Middelaar, Holland 3 Oct 1944.

My dad fought from the beaches to the start of this operation across Europe and beyond. When this film came out we sat down together and he said to me Edward Fox sounded and acted just like General Horrocks. When he drove his tank up towards the bridges, he still hadn't turned 18. Thinking about it, he did seem to do his best to stop me being, as he joined the SAS just after the war and proceeded to do what they did across the world for 25 years. Maybe that's why I joined up at 16. Thankfully I have two daughters who will not carry on the family tradition.

My dad played Ted Williams played goal keeper for the Middlesex regiment in Egypt and let a simple pass back through his hands and in to the net, which lost them the game, next day my dad heard Horrocks yell across the the parade ground at him, he wanted to know exactly what happened , my dad said It was just one of those things sir, Horrocks said "that'll do for me Corporal

I have met Edward Fox. He is trying to get us New Zealanders recognised for our effort in WW2. On of our commanders was Keith Park. Edward Fox is particularly keen on him. He is as well thought of in NZ as Dick Winters and Ray Spruance are in the US and Johnnie Walker and Lennie Cheshire were in Britain.

Horrocks greatest asset was his charm, wit, and inspiring attitude. Those made him a great leader. With it he achieved not only the respect but the admiration of the men who served under his command.

The movie is not a lie. Guards Armoured Division stopped after crossing the bridge and the U.S. paratroopers were astonished that they did not continue. Understandably after they had been slaughtered crossing the river in rickety boats and capturing the other end of the bridge. The paratrooper shown, played by Robert Redford, does not understand why they stop-just as the paratroopers did then. It is because they did not know the Guards Armoured Division's situation with their infantry and fuel.

Might have worked if they had landed next to the bridge in Arnhem where the polish eventually landed and the yanks had taken Nyjmagen bridge right away instead of pissing about.
@kevingilligan1395 жыл бұрын
It wouldn't have mattered anyway. the bridge at Eindhoven was blown up by the Germans before the airborne could get there to secure it. It was a foolish plan, unlikely to work. It totally depended on a very tight timetable, and if only one of the bridges were destroyed, the timetable collapsed.

@Gheorgyi Horrocks wasn't that kind of leader. He was VERY unusual for a British general, ahead of his time in how he informed his troops. Factual? He used to visit the front lines and produce large maps, showing them what and how they were doing.

You need to remember that after crossing the bridge, Guards Armoured was 8MILES from Arnhem. The ground forces should have been Patton's 3rd Army, much more of a hard driving force than XXX Corps. This has been stated many times by British, American and military experts from around the world. I agree. Gavin failed to take the town and bridge yes but Guards Armoured waiting 18 HOURS before moving towards Arnhem was criminal. Patton would have pushed forward and Germans could not stop them .

The problem being, that they were already behind schedule due to the Americans having failed to take Nijmegen bridge and secure it earlier. Resulting in the Battle of Nijmegen. You are using hindsight to say they should have advanced in the dark down a road, with no recon, and no support. No army in the world would risk that.
@fishingthelist401710 ай бұрын
I suspect that Patton would have done Eindhoven in 2-3 hours and Arnhem in 2-3 days two weeks before Monty launched Market-Garden because the Germans had a huge gap in their front in Holland. By waiting to prepare for his set piece battle, Monty allowed the Germans to turn a defeated mob into a force that was capable of stopping XXX Corps.

Fox played the role of this British Gen Horrocks well. This scene is very good .. it portrays Horrocks as the classic British, puffed-up, ignorant buffoon general that he was. That utterly pompous, stupid-looking leather 'hunting vest' that he was so fond of wearing, says a lot about his persona. While on the topic of puffed-up, ignorant British generals .. Montgomery is another classic case. His Market-Garden scheme was a madcap one. Monty was way overrated. With false pride cometh the fall.
