Hey Tori, because of you I bought the 1st 3 books awhile back. I am ready to start my Suneater journey now. Can't wait to be able to chat with you about it.

Wheel of Time has held the number #1 favorite series since 1998, but Sun Eater now holds that spot. These books are mind-boggling good. Make sure to read Dregs of Empire before Disquiet Gods. I can’t wait to see you continue with the series! There’s something writing itself is beautiful. I love that the author pays homage to so many of his literary inspirations, it made me so happy as a fellow reader. The world feels so vast and so real. I feel like the scope and politics make it feel like epic sci-fantasy, in the best possible way. There are also elements of horror and I found that really cool. This series is incredibly special.

Hey Tori! Love that you’re loving a sun eater so far. Was able to meet Christopher in person at marscon this weekend and he is such an awesome person. If you happen to finish disquiet gods by mid March time, myself and my buddy Jake from his channel NerdLevelRising are going to be doing a spoiler discussion with Christopher and I’d love to invite you along!

i love how in sun eater with each book the worlds is getting bigger and richer, full of life. this is something that really bothered me in dune how the world in dune feels uninhabited which cheapened for me Paul's rumination on what he brought into being.

The universe feels so vast and the way time passes in the books adds to that feel.

Thanks for this video! Always love to hear your input! I'm almost done with Empire of Silence and struggled getting into the narrative in the first half of the book but got very interested once I got the hang of it and got used to Hadrian's pov. So this video helped me get a better idea on the build-up that I missed. And it definitely makes me more excited for how much more expansive the story will become!

Good thing this is very different from Red Rising, hate Red Rising and DNFd Will of the Many because of how similar they are. Excited to continue book 2 of Sun Eater. ❤
@katieamarshКүн бұрын
I don’t think it’s anything like Red Rising. I wasn’t a fan of the first Red Rising book, but I was pushed to keep going and the series definitely got good. There’s something so special about Sun Eater.

This is perfect timing because I am just starting on the Sun Eater series and about 100 pages into the first book. Your precious videos on this series is what got me interested in it. Currently reading it as an ebook but I am so tempted to just buy physical copies because I am really enjoying it so far, even though I have a very long way to go

Great video. Regarding Dune comparison, I had the fortune of reading dune for the first time just 4 months before reading empire of silence. Ruocchio is clearly inspired by Dune and loves it, and for the first 1/3 to 1/2 it tracks closely. And then Ruocchip shifts and says "thank you Frank, but here's my story" and from there on it is its own masterpiece, with lovely easter egg homages to his other influences (theres a clear gandalf paraphrase in Demon in White, as just one example). For those who say this is a dune rip-off, it is the same as saying every historical high fantasy is a tolkien rip-off. Yes, there is influence and similarities, but the richness lies in the adaptation and where all these incredible authors bring something new and wonderful to the genres.

And also, your clear love of this series and my love of it also led me to Amina al Sirafi from one of your other videos, which is my first 5 star read of 2025 so thank you

This was so helpful! I’m very interested in diving into this series, but felt intimidated. I also didn’t love Red Rising (only read the first one), so the comparison was off-putting. I feel better about giving Suneater a try after this video. Thanks 😊

I am more of a fantasy reader, but the sun eater series has been recommended by so many folks that I figured that I give it a try. I don’t want to start it until I finish the two other books (Fury of the Gods and Valor, both by John Gwynne) that are on my shelf since if I do really like sun eater then I would want to continue going through it.

I picked up the first book off your recommendation of it ages ago but I found the first book to be almost exactly like Dune. Does the series get its own voice at some point or is it just a difference version of Dune all the way through?
@rachelny5209Күн бұрын
Good timing. I have some family friends that are Dune die hards. I'd been wondering if they'd like Empire of Silence. I haven't read it yet but I plan to (currently reading Justice of Kings).
@Isaiah_McIntoshКүн бұрын
Its not so straightforward of an answer to give. In terms of aesthetic there are strong similarities especially in empire of silence. Philosophically, suneater is meant to be in a lot of ways a thematic response to Herbert's thesis in Dune and Dune Messiah. For a personal anecdote Dune and Dune Messiah are my top 2 sci-fi books while Ruocchio might atp be my favourite author even above greats like wolfe atp (if you see this christopher I don't care about your opinion on that ranking).
@ToriMorrowКүн бұрын
I think if they love Dune there’s a high chance they’d enjoy sun eater! They’re so different by I think the scope of world, politics, and detailed history could work for any dune fan ❤️

My preference is always going to be ebook/physical! I can keep track of the story, characters, and places much better when I’m physically reading
@brockmutchelknaus7896Күн бұрын
I agree with Tori. Also, a huge perk with this series is the glossary in the physical/ebook. There are a number of terms that are made up for this series. I caught myself flipping to that multiple times early on in the series when I was confused.

The audio books are very good and I would definitely recommend them.

The audiobooks with Samuel Roukin are really good, in my opinion. I don't tend to enjoy reading long epics physically, but I love listening to long epic audiobooks, so I would recommend the audio unless you feel differently.
