What happened to the .41 Magnum? Appeared and apparently disappeared within a few years as a service cartridge.

I'm glad you made this, 357 magnum is my favorite revolver caliber because of the versatility of ammo & how you can shoot 38spl. There's loads you can use for self defense & hunting for 357 magnum.

@@wizardofahhhs759 Yeah but 44spl is hard to find & usually just as expensive as it's magnum counterpart. But I do like the 44spl I used to have a Ruger redhawk 4.20" & always ended up just buying 44magnum because the 44spl was rarely in stock & when it was it was expensive AF.

@@wizardofahhhs759 not as compact or concealable and there’s less options for snub noses in .44 plus like was said already ammo is even more rare and even .357 can be scarce now in some areas

Thanks for your post on the .357 magnum. My first .357 magnum revolver was a Colt Trooper with a 6" barrel. Its purpose was to carry on boarding parties while patrolling the coast of Vietnam. Today I have .357 revolvers in a 2" and 4" revolver and a lever action rifle.

Thank you for this video and for giving the late Elmer Keith the credit he deserves. I’m thinking that if the .38 special had been developed for only smokeless powder the case would have been shorter like a 9mm and the .357 magnum would have been the length of the .38 special. I’m glad that didn’t happen because the case length of the magnum cartridge is great for a lot of loads.

I’ve been shooting/carrying a version of the M19 since 1982! My first was a 19-4, 6inch (cc was not legal then) but in 2001 when I finally got my cc license I started carrying a M19, 2 1/2inch gun loaded with 158 gr JHP. Today my favorite carry is the M19 Carry Comp. Also have a Henry .357 lever rifle at my bedside too. I don’t need no stinking double stack plastic gun!

357 magnum = Versatility. Rifle and sidearm, same ammo. 1250fps, sidearm, same bullet, 1700fps Rifle. Handloading the 357 adds even more versatility. I must add that I can use ALL the 38sp ammo. In house Self Protection load is a Western 148gn Full Wadcutter, 3gn of Bullseye. The light bullets, 110-125, JHP, Self Defence loadings.The heavy bullets, LHCSWC Hunting. Dual roll of the 357 Self Protection AND Hunting. Using my 357 magnum rifle, 22 inch Barrel, 2 deer @ 70 & 80 yards and one boar @ 62 yards 1 hog have been taken, with ONE SHOT. Shot Placement using the rifle with a scope and from the Bench is phenomenal. 3 shot groups @ 50 yards, all holes touching. Factory 357 magnum is about $1.00- $1.30 per round. My reloads, using lead bullets .23 cents per round, for Jacketed .43 cents per round. I do load my pistol and rifle ammos differenantly. For my sidearm I stick with the loading manual. For the rifle I can step up the pressure a bit, really bring out the hottness for the 357. A 125 XTP JHP loaded "HOT", from 22in barrel Rifle, 1925fps. This loading will blowup an adult Groundhog. VERSATILITY IS WHAT THE 357 IS ALL ABOUT.

My favorite revolver round is the 44 mag but lately I have been shooting .357 a lot and have acquired a good selection including a 340PD smith at 12oz.... A model 19 target (yes they made em) a Colt Python from 1969... A Colt Trooper... An Uberti 1873 Colt clone.... and a Henry color case hardened lever gun. I handload so all of these guns eat inexpensively with cast and coated bullets. Unlike the 44 mag or even my 45 acp guns... newbies love em (except for the 340 PD which is brutal)

Over all a solid video with a couple of mistakes. The first has to do with Elmer Keith and his beloved cast bullet. The shape of the meplate had nothing to do with increasing the ballistic coefficient or the way it cut through the air . It has everything to do with the way the flat meplate and the sharp shoulder of his hard cast semi wadcutter bullets damaged flesh whether animal or human. Secondly the long gun in your video was definitely not a Marlin 1894 but a Winchester model 1894. Pretty easy to differentiate between the two. The Marlin ejects out of the side of the receiver and the Winchester ejects from the top of the receiver as well as numerous other differences in appearance. Keep up the good work. Double check your facts and make sure of your firearms!

It’s also important to note that a .38 special is called a .38 despite firing a bullet with a .357 diameter bullet, this is because back in the day colt named their cartridges based on case diameter, and smith and Wesson just stuck with that.
@JohnFourtyTwo
@JohnFourtyTwo Жыл бұрын
The original .38 the caliber was measured around the the round itself which back then had a lip on it that went around the casing just like a .22 does today; the casing diameter for those original .38s was .357. When the .38 Special and .357 Magnum were invented years later with the round seated inside the casing, they just added “special” since the casing was the same length but used .357 to differentiate the two. Also, 9mm is in the same family as .38 as well as the .380 which is called a 9mm short in Europe.

Great vid, enjoyed it. I think saying the ballistic coefficient of the flat nose .357 bullet is higher than a rounder nose .38 is not correct though. Something flat almost always has more drag than something round. 357 will have better ballistics overall as it comes out a lot faster, but the BC has got to be lower than something with a rounded nose.

The 'brief' history is rather 'brief'. All Smith & Wesson revolvers were named in those days. The first incarnation of .357 Magnum was indeed the Registered Magnum. Custom made with certificate and all that jazz. I have a suspicion they were more popular than S&W expected. So S&W started making the essential same revolver in a regular format of barrel lengths in the pre-war WW2 era with a limited - due to the war, not whim of S&W - to less than the Registered Magnum. Then, after WW2 came the ".357 Magnum" revolver (Transitional postwar) version with a serial number with a leading "S". In 1957 S&W began numbering the products and the ".357 Magnum' became known as the Model 27. Since then, S&W has changed ownership and the model number system a couple of times. You're on your own from then. I rather like .357 Magnum. I carried one (several incarnations actually) as a lawman. The .357 Magnum round was also available (since 1955 or so) in the "Combat Magnum" renamed in 1957 as the Model 19. Later the same revolver design was make in a stainless steel version called the Model 66. They are both K frame revolvers and therefore lighter. It is now (I don't follow them as closely anymore) in a J frame (small) revolver. The drawback of the .357 Magnum is recoil. Even the large (N frame) version is 'exuberant' in recoil. One would never fire such a pistol without noting the recoil. The smaller revolvers, the K frame and smaller and shorter barrel choices are progressively more serious in recoil. When I was much younger I could shoot one with a certain aplomb. I am now in my 70s and prefer not to shoot one as much. However, a .357 Magnum round is easier to handle than a 'standard' .44 Magnum round out of a similar weight revolver. The .357 Magnum is about the maximum most shooters can reliably handle on a consistent basis. They certainly deliver in the horsepower department.

Although the term “stopping power” is out of favor with gun snobs millennials, it is still a term that people like me understand and prefer. Unless you are in a running gun battle with gang-banger the 357m is without question still a strong contender for self defense. It’s not my first choice as a battle cartage side arm, for that a .40sw or 357sig is ideal. Thank you for an informative vid. Keep’um coming.

The Desert Eagle is too much gun for .357 Magnum. I wouldn't get .357 Magnum in an autoloader because the rimmed case is always going to be difficult to work around, and because you can get similar ballistics from a 10mm Auto. A Glock 20 has nearly twice the capacity of a Desert Eagle in .357 Magnum, is significantly smaller, and weighs about half as much. It also costs less than half as much. Smith and Wesson got tired of having some of their smaller framed revolvers rattle apart with a steady diet of full power .357 Magnum, and petitioned SAAMI to lower the operating pressure of the .357 to 35,000 PSI in the early 90s. That was a substantial drop in pressure, and performance. I know people with Ruger SP-100s that have reloading manuals from the 1970s, and still run the original loads through them, and it is a completely different animal than the stuff you buy over the counter today; kind of like picking up a box of 10mm and realizing it is just more expensive .40 S&W. Really underwhelming. I think S&W should petition SAAMI to put the teeth back into the .357 Magnum with a +P load for larger frame revolvers that is loaded to original spec.
