For the few hours I had in Bologna to spend, I thought I'd make a video of the "Due Torri" the two leaning Towers of Bologna built between the 12th and 13th century.
Before ascending the treacherous climb up the 498 stairs to see the view of the city, you have to buy a 5 Euro ticket from the Tourist Office which is located in the "Piazza Maggiore", a 5 minute walk from the tower.

It is very true that you never know how tall something is until you are standing under it and look up. I did this while visiting NYC one new years eve and looked up at the Empire State Building. I could only do so for a minute at a time because it makes you very dizzy and I am not certain if it was really swaying back and forth but it certainly seemed to be. Wonderful video, thank you for sharing it.

3'35'' Yes, the façade was never completed. The building was made of bricks and it was supposed to be covered with marble, but marble is not present in that Italian region (it is no coincidence that most great Italian sculpturers are from Tuscany or Veneto, that is where the marble is). All the white marble you see there came from Dalmatia by boat, whereas the red one came from Verona, it was extremely expensive.

In Piazza Maggiore there was less than 50 executions in 700 years ;) The fact of hundreds towers was half unreal. In XIVc there was 98-100 towers but 70 of those was less than 30m tall. The leaning of towers is not because of architects but because of soft-clay ground, with a river every 5-6km.

2'28'' No, San Petronio was NEVER the largest church in the world: it was designed to become the largest church in the world, but it was never finished. It was extremely expensive and, according to some unproven but very credible rumors, the pope did not want any church to be larger than St. Peter's in Rome.

@raffaeleirlanda6966
@raffaeleirlanda6966 4 жыл бұрын
Too much often in Italy we have bad soil to build high structures, so in the Middle Ages the towers always starting leaning and construction stops, until after many years a new architect decide to accept the challenge of such an enterprise and usually he completes the job even if it is a leaning tower we got in the end... 🤣🤣🤣
@Podzzy
@Podzzy 2 жыл бұрын
Moreover, the towers in the Middle Ages had not very deep foundations, this certainly made things worse.
@nicolanobili2113
@nicolanobili2113 2 жыл бұрын
@@Podzzy Actually, those towers have very deep foundations, at least 5 metres high... At least in Bologna. The point is that the ground is not always stable. In Pisa, for instance, this is very evident, indeed most historical buildings in that town are leaning, though people may not see that because they only pay attention to the famous tower.
@Podzzy
@Podzzy 2 жыл бұрын
@@nicolanobili2113 I've read that about Pavia towers, which, since they are similar to those of Bologna and dating back to the same period, I thought they were built with the same construction technique.
@nicolanobili2113
@nicolanobili2113 2 жыл бұрын
16'40'' You missed one of the functions of the towers: prestige. The taller your tower was, the richer and more powerful your family was. And yes, they had a defensive function, but it was mostly a sort of "deterrent": do you really want to attack a family which has such strong and tall towers?

The Two Towers are a bit older than you wrote. Legend has it, they were built between 1109 and 1119, however there are hints at an earlier origin. In particular, the taller one was designed using the Roman foot (about 29 cm) instead of the Bolognese foot (about 38 cm), which can only be explained as follows: 1) they used some bricks and stones from an older Roman building 2) the tower, or at least the basement and the first few floors, are much older and date back to the Roman age or early Middle Ages, when the traditional Roman units of measurements were still being used in Bologna.

@@RaduRadonys What you said doesn't hold true for the car and motorbikes brands I mentioned. For instance, Ferrari cars are made EXCLUSIVELY in Maranello, between Modena and Bologna. And in any case, many millionaires who want to buy a Ferrari do come to Maranello, since all these cars are personalized (they ask you for your size, sometimes even for the shoe size for the pedals) and leave to go back home on their new cars.
