Thank you for all the information. I had tons of golden books as a child. My favorite thing about grocery shopping w my parents was the aisle with all the books. I always got a new book. Then I would go home and bug someone enough till they read it to me. I loved reading my Golden books. Next to my mom's chair were piles of books. I would start with one pile and read or look at them all everyday. My parents had 5 adopted children. I was their only reader. So my mom had me in all sorts of book clubs. My first love was Golden books and Wonder books as well as Rand McNally. I remember before I could read and I knew all the stories by heart. I would pretend to read the stories to my dolls and they never grew tired of my stories, the books were all made up stories by me till I could read then of course they were what the words said. My very favorite was the Country Mouse and the City Mouse. I even had a dress that had that on the pockets. We read that story in second grade and I had my dress on and the kids all thought I was special. Great Memories. I've started collecting them about a year now. The ones also that I collect are the soft cover shaped like the subject. Like a cat or Zebra cover. I believe you can never be to old for a story. So they were Golden when i was a child and they are Golden to me now in my "metallic years. Silver hair, gold teeth and lead in my bum. Lol sorry so long winded.

@@KittywittyPapercraft Did you know that in some of the 1980s and 1990s books, the color of the back cover would often change. They would all show the same characters on the back (e,g, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Big Bird,) but depending on what book it is, can change the color of the back cover. Most books from the 1980s and 1990s have the bright yellow/tan color on the back cover, the green color on the back cover would be used for Christmas books, the pink color on the back cover would be used for Disney titles made by Little Golden Books, and the blue color on the back cover would be used for Sesame Street titles made by Little Golden Books.

my first Little Golden Book was Three little Pigs. I was born in 72 so I would guess I was under 5 years old. But the miracle of it was that my family and I were driving on a long trip and we were out in the middle of nowhere in a forrested area. So I needed to pee and my dad pulled over to let me use the forrest. While I was finding a tree to go on, I found the three little pigs on the ground in the forrest. I was so amazed by this find and I kept that book forever. It was in pretty good condition though I could tell it was older than me. Wish I still had that book.

Great video! I love LGBs although older ones are hard to find here in New Zealand. You will find books from later than 1942 with 42 pages. I have a copy of The little taxi that hurried, a g printing from 1946 (first year of issue, I believe) that has 42 pages a mix of b&w and coloured. I also have a Golden Press Sydney copy of Little Galoshes which was first published in 1949 with 42 pages. Your edition of Tenggren's bedtime stories is a second edition with new cover art, which explains the foiled spine (and may be an A run from that edition). The first 'blue spine' edition has a blonde boy and girl on a blue patterned sofa with a greenish sky. I also think they may have returned to that cover for later editions which makes it confusing! I am new to junk journals but have been collecting children's books for a long time. I have been enjoying your videos whilst getting up the courage to start my first journal! My Aunt has a mint condition copy of Dr Dan the bandage man which I imagine is close to a first edition and it still has the bandaids in it. I would have whipped those out and stuck them on my doll the day I got the book!
@KittywittyPapercraft4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for this helpful information, Melissa!! I truly appreciate it! Yes, I'm not sure why the info says they stopped printing books with 42 pages during the war, but there are clearly books later that have 42 pages! And thank you for clarifying about Bedtime Stories!! I forgot that the other cover was the original! I have 1 of those later reprints of the first cover. I didn't realize my copy was a second edition because it only shows the 1942 copyright and no other dates or mention of a different printing! Wow! A Dr. Dan with the band-aids still in it! Soo hard to find it with the band-aids still there!! Very special, indeed!! So exciting you are thinking about making junk journals! I have a Facebook Group for those who want to learn more about the making of junk journals and an online class for beginners that teaches how to build the cover and sew the signatures. Links to both are in the Description Box above, if you are interested! Best of luck to you!! Please let me know if I can ever be of help! xoxo

Thanks for this video, super interesting! Do you know the printing process for the illustrations? Were they lithography prints? Thanks!
@KittywittyPapercraft Жыл бұрын
I couldn't find a clear answer on that! Lithography is an expensive, complicated process. Offset-lithography is more suited to mass production, and may be what was used. When I think of lithography in vintage children's books, I think of the big books published by Whitman Publishing that had an almost canvas-like feel to them. They are quite different in color and texture than LGBs. The illustrations in those books are super bright and saturated and don't fade. I've seen them referred to as having "lithograph prints" so that is where I got that info. Sorry I don't have a better answer!! Thank you for watching and leaving a comment! xo Amy

Great video Amy, I learned a lot about Little Golden Books. You mentioned price guides, the most recent price guides I find are from the early to mid 2000's. I've seen a reference to one from 2017, but am having trouble finding it...do you have any info about purchasing any of the price guides?
@KittywittyPapercraft4 жыл бұрын
Thank you , Angelia! I had trouble finding any recent ones when I went looking, too. I don't know of any published after the early 2000s. The one I got I am really happy with (Warman's Little Golden Books Identification and Price Guide by Steve Santi). It was published in 2006. Even though the prices are from that long ago, it still gives you a good idea of the value of each book title compared to other titles and I think that's the most helpful piece of it. And I actually don't think the value of the books have increased since that time, based on what I see them go for today! I love the book I got because it has a color photo of every single LGB ever printed (well, up to 2006!) and it's value. I like having it just so I know all the different books I could look for! Here is a link to the one I bought (this is an affiliate link, fyi :): amzn.to/3cA4Q24 Please let me know if you have any other questions! xoxo Amy :)

You are welcome, Susan! I wont be using any of these for journals bc I want to have one copy of each of the first books that were published. Although, the one A to Z book is in really bad shape on the inside, so I would consider using the cover for a journal and keeping my eye out for a better copy for my collection. I dont usually turn older, rarer, 1st editions into journals, although I will consider it if it's not in collecting condition or if it's one that is easy to find and I know there are many many copies of that title out there. If you really love the books you recently found, you could always get another copy of them to use for journal making. Do you know about my Facebook group, Kittywitty Junk Journalers? Wonderful video!! Any tips on cleaning the covers? I have a 1944 LGB of Flowers, blue spine minus dust jacket and it doesn’t have that waxy cover the ones w/o dust covers do and it’s white, and smudged a bit. I was going to try mild soap & water but didn’t know if there was a tried & true practice. P.S. the bookstore I got this from put a sticker on the blue spine, which pulled off when I removed it🤦🏼♀️
@KittywittyPapercraft3 жыл бұрын
Hi Buffy! Thank you!! If it doesn't have a waxy coating on it, there really isnt a good/safe way to clean it. If you wanted to test a tiny area on the back cover to see how it acts, you can do that, but I have covers like that that are that old and the paper is quite fragile. If it were me, I would leave it as is. All the blemishes are part of its charm, in my opinion! Sorry the price sticker took some paper off! I hate when they do that! You might already know this, but if you want to remove stickers in the future, heat it first with a heat gun and they usually come right off without taking any paper with it. Hope this was helpful! 🤗💖💖💖💖

Could it have been a Wonder Book or Rand McNally book or similar? They were all about the same size. If I come across a book with a cover like that, I will come back here and let you know!! xoxo Amy :)

@@cathyratliff398 Oh, I'm happy to! Hopefully we will figure it out! I know how it is to want to remember something from childhood! There was a game I used to play with my sister that I cannot recall the name of and I haven't come across it yet! 😄😄😄💕🤗💕💕💕

@@user-mq3vy6ov8e Hi! I had to Google it, but it looks like A Treasure Cove books are published in the UK and they are owned by Disney. Hope that helps! Thank you for watching! 🤗🩷✨️🩵

I'm so sorry I'm just seeing your question now, Teresa! I like using Warman's Little Golden Book Identification and Price Guide by Steve Santi. It's a little old (2006), but it gives a good idea of how much each is worth and it's just a great guide because it shows all the LGBs published up til that time and each book has a color photo of the cover. It's a really nice guide to have if you collect LGBs!

Can u help me I have a little golden book the animals of farmer jones the cover of the book is red and white last page has a letter p. Is this book valuable?
@KittywittyPapercraft3 жыл бұрын
Hi Liza! That cover is not the original artwork, so that makes it less valuable, and a 'P' edition is quite a few printings later (since A editions are first and then each printing gets the next letter all the way to Z (and then sometimes beyond by doubling letters!). So the short answer is no, it's not really valuable. It's worth about $4 in good condition. Hope that helps! 🤗❤❤❤

Thank you for this video. I also love to hear about the history of collectibles. I have only recently started collecting them to make junk journals. I have a Savers thrift superstore near me and they usually sell them for 1.99 each.
