Throughout the 1940's and 60's, a blind man could be seen reciting poetry or playing music while dressed as a viking on 54th and 6th ave in New York City. Many believed he was homeless and thought of him as more of a novelty not realizing that he was an acclaimed composer who had written 80 symphonies! This is a brief story of the man known as the viking of 6th ave better known as "Moondog".

I used to play hooky from my elementary school in Queens, take the subway into the city and hang on 6th Ave. I think it was the CBS Headquarters and hang out with Moondog, listening to him talk and play his instruments. I guess it was 1968-69. He seemed other worldly and captured my imagination.

I remember visiting with Moondog on the street when I worked in NYC during the summers of 1969 & 1970. He was a fascinating man. I cherish my memories of those conversations and have come to realize what a privilege it was to spend even a few moments in his presence.

When I was 4 or 5 years old 1956, '57 Moondog often sat outside the Greenwich bank on 6th ave. and 14th st in Manhattan, when I went to the bank with my mother I would stop and talk to him, he always remembered my name.

I came to the states in 1974. My aunt had her studio on 21st and 6th av. She was an abstractionist and would take me up to MOMA for lunch. I was a wide eyed kid from england who soaked up everything and I specifically remember seeing Moondog on one of these luncheons with my aunt. NYC was something else.

Whenever I pass moondogs corner here in Recklinghausen I think of him. It's the city where he lived in Germany. He is not very known in Recklinghausen, There is a club with his name but beside this and a little sign on this place where he stand there is not much attention on the unique music genius.

In the early 70s (70-72) Moondog used to hangout on the corner of St. Mark's Place and 2nd ave. I used to see him just standing there while on my way to the Fillmore or to buy some records. He never bothered any body. I don't even remember him asking for money. He was just there.

Amazing.! Thank you for this. Woke up with his music running through my head after not hearing it for nearly 50 years.! What an inspiration to everyone to not let a potentially catastrophic disability stop you from being a creative genius.

Moondog songs in this video, in order: Stamping Ground Symphonique #6 (Good For Goodie) Lament 1 (Bird's Lament) Witch Of Endor Viking (I hope I got them all, and got them right. I already knew Bird's Lament and Stamping Ground from movies. Most of these appear on his 1969 self-titled album.)

Wow this was terrific until you had to grind your AXE regarding Trump. If he had some relatable relevance it would be one thing. Surely as a New Yorker he would have seen Moondog. We all did. Moondog was a fixture that we could expect in the city where there were all possibilities and at a time of artistic experimentation and expression in NYC. I still like to think of New York as a place where people can escape mundane America. A place where a person is free to be their authentic selves. That is what led Moondog there.
