dmonkface they do it differently to every socio-economic group. Each level up it becomes more sophisticated, so people can readily identify it amongst other groups outside their own, but become blind to the fact that it’s happening to them. There are common characteristics with members of same group. Almost herd mentality. People in search of same thing eventually settle in same type of communities & over time become more and more alike. Similar income, jobs, houses, interests, cars, clubs... it becomes easier to identify groups and market people. That’s what all the data mining, surveys, geo-tagging and internet search algorithms are all about.

Chomsky is often described as one of the best-known figures of the American left, although he doesn't agree with the usage of the term. He has described himself as a "fellow traveller" to the anarchist tradition, and refers to himself as a libertarian socialist, a political philosophy he summarizes as challenging all forms of authority and attempting to eliminate them if they are unjustified for which the burden of proof is solely upon those who attempt to exert power. He identifies with the labor-oriented anarcho-syndicalist current of anarchism in particular cases, and is a member of the Industrial Workers of the World. He also exhibits some favor for the libertarian socialist vision of participatory economics, himself being a member of the Interim Committee for the International Organization for a Participatory Society.

I like the documentary, but I wouldn't want people to get the wrong idea about the book Manufacturing Consent. The book demonstrates limitations of the media, regardless of whether you think this is the result of a purposeful agenda by a specialized class, by presenting a propaganda model as the logical conclusions of a detailed explanation of the economic constraints of the media. A few quotes from the first chapter, which are supported with specific evidence and elaborated on to great detail in the book, are below to give some idea. "A propaganda model focuses on this inequality of wealth and power and its multilevel effects on mass-media interests and choices. It traces the routes by which money and power are able to filter out the news fit to print, marginalize dissent, and allow the government and dominant private interests to get their messages across to the public. The essential ingredients of our propaganda model, or set of news "filters," fall under the following headings: (1) the size, concentrated ownership, owner wealth, and profit orientation of the dominant mass-media firms; (2) advertising as the primary income source of the mass media; (3) the reliance of the media on information provided by government, business, and "experts" funded and approved by these primary sources and agents of power; (4) "flak" as a means of disciplining the media; and (5) "anticommunism" as a national religion and control mechanism." "The elite domination of the media and marginalization of dissidents that results from the operation of these. filters occurs so naturally that media news people, frequently operating with complete integrity and goodwill, are able to convince themselves that they choose and interpret the news "objectively" and on the basis of professional news values." "Before advertising became prominent, the price of a newspaper had to cover the costs of doing business. With the growth of advertising, papers that attracted ads could afford a copy piece well below production costs. This put papers lacking in advertising at a serious disadvantage: their prices would tend to be higher, curtailing sales, and they would have less surplus to invest in improving the salability of the paper (features, attractive format, promotion, etc.). For this reason, an advertising-based system will tend to drive out of existence or into marginality the media companies and types that depend on revenue from sales alone. With advertising, the free market does not yield a neutral system in which final buyer choice decides. The advertisers' choices influence media prosperity and survival."
@inmundo6927 Жыл бұрын
"With advertising, the free market does not yield a neutral system in which final buyer choice decides". That ONLY if you ASSUME the following: That "The advertisers' choices influence media prosperity and survival..." to the point were the individual makes NO CHOICES whatsoever. And THAT is a loooong stretch. By that token we can say advertisers themselves are under some sort of spell (profit) which compels them to "advertise" not for the good of humanity, but for their own good. Was that not the case BEFORE advertisement? Meaning, is advertising at fault here? And also, how do you take advertisement out of any "business" equation? I mean, you want to sell something: isn't "talking about it", the fact that you got something to sell, already some form of advertisement? When you look for jobs, aren't you then advertising your own capabilities? as being above the rest of competitors? Well, to me, that's Chomsky's biggest fallacy. Of course advertisement is an easy culprit, but aren't we all responsible in the end? Of course, he puts it, again, in a way as though we are all instead simply helpless victims. That's the way Chomsky puts it, transforming us all, by definition, into "victims" of the devices of a dominant and all knowing class.
@inmundo6927 Жыл бұрын
ok, that was a bit long, but what I wanted to say basically is: "With advertising, the free market does not yield a neutral system..." How could any commercial system lack any form of advertisement???? Am I not allowed to talk about the product I want to sell to you?? How do I even come about selling it then?????! How is there free market AT ALL if I am not allowed to say, whatever I want to say about what I got to offer???? Then if you buy it and does not come to the expectations I set up you simply won't buy from me again. ---> I can only but see a free market mechanism here at work. WITH or WITHOUT advertisement.

I was blown away by just how articulate he is, and how much time he must have spent forming these opinions. The section from 5:25-6:24 was especially fascinating to me because Conservatives always talk about how the Left "controls the media," using this to play the victim and paint left-wing thought as this delusional, extremist ideology that people only believe because it's what the media is pushing on them. I had never even considered the possibility that it's in the best interest of the elites to have the mainstream national media lean slightly left of center, with the exception of Fox, as a way to make any truly leftist ideology seem radical in comparison.

Social media has changed things. Now we create the content and consume it, while KZbin makes a profit. It's an even better deal for corporations. Of course, in countries with free speech digital media giants don't filter in the same way as the New York Times, GE, etc. So I think the discourse has broadened and definitely changed and become more "diverse", which is mostly great, but at the same time, as McLuhan said, "The medium is the message, " so our discourse is shaped by the peculiarities of the tweet and the short video and screens and anonymity. Of course, digital media has the potential to be ruthless controlled, as we see in China.
@jackdeakin106 Жыл бұрын
@@faintscrawl Good point! You could also argue that the control is already ruthless. Idiots feeling content tweeting about their disapproval of governments without actually doing anything about it is the perfect substitute for action. Algorithms deliberately want us to get angry because its easier to have a fight with a stranger on the internet and go about your day than it is to organise and see real change. Instead of writing me this pointless response, you could’ve searched for the interview yourself, it’s available right at your fingertips, and formed an opinion based on reality rather than the hearsay that you want to hear. You would’ve heard clear, explicit words, not open to interpretation, which would’ve verified what I said was correct. But to do that would have required a tiny bit of caring for the truth, and a little effort and good faith, and since you have none of those, it would be absurd wasting any time or energy to “clarify” anything for you.

He says one should not fall for propaganda but himself speaks as a mouthpiece of NYT and Washington Post on India and Modi. He seems to fall into the same trap that he has spent his life warning people about. Also he is sympathetic to many Islamic countries but these countries literally are Dystopia where starting from Academia to Media to Law you are indoctrinated about a Prophet and his book, any dissent is punished and you can only say yes to the system. Chomsky's Linguistic works are very Good, his media book is decent but his political views are inconsistent and at many points wrong.

All this seems very sound, and I would agree with much of it. This is public speaking, and Chomsky is pretty well known speaker. Many people listen to and agree with what he has to say, and what he's saying is that the world is seriously screwed up. However, it makes no difference. No change will come out of his endeavors. People listen to him for entertainment. We do get upset as we listen, but not sufficiently. We're not going to do anything about it. By doing something, I don't mean revolution and pitch forks. That doesn't work. It's been tried, and it just produced more of the same. Domination, exploitation, and injustice were never eradicated, not for a day. The change I'm talking about is much deeper and fundamental, thus much more difficult. We need to change ourselves, all of us. We need to become more courageous, considerate, selfless, educated, and we need to really think. Only then can we create better society. That will be very difficult, almost impossible, and ultimately it leads to a boring world. Maybe we can learn to like and appreciate boring and enjoy such world, and live our lives content and serene as Indian cows, but I don't see that happening. This is the world that works for us, for our nature, and though we gripe and whine and complain endlessly about injustices, inequalities, and other "problems", we actually like it this way. That's why I'm with the spirit of George Carlin - I'm finding it difficult to continue playing the game, but I can still watch it with interest and amusement, and some emotion.

One of the main function of a good propaganda system is that it makes you think that you are alone in your thoughts.It makes you feel alone .But it reality there are a lot of people who believe and know what is happening but because they think they are alone they try not to touch anything.And another function of a propaganda system is that it makes you think that is is absolutely essential part of the society and without it people would not be able to live a good life and it is impossible to find a better way of living.And in some part I agree, changing is difficult and painful but the things is this fundamental changes don't happen in day or even in months it happens in years and centuries.So we should be patient and spread the truth so when the day comes we will be ready.

The hell that we like it this way. You might be content to stay at home and be a spectator to exploitation but don't tell me "we're not going to do anything about it." Plenty of people out there fighting hard for it. smh how are you going to watch this video, agree with it, and then conclude the problem is we're just not being nice enough to each other? The poverty, corruption, and wars of our society have systemic origins. Maybe you have the comfort and privilege of staying at home and watching from the sidelines, but others are dying on the street to easily preventable causes because our society and government is a system of control designed to protect the interests of capitalists. It is not human nature that causes these things, it is a political choice we have made and continue to make; don't blame individuals for it. Every day we wake up and choose capitalism. It's time to make a different choice.

dubrime Would be nice to have friends like you. People that are actually thinkers. I started my journey of looking behind the curtain at the age of 12. I’m almost 30 now. I know a lot but what good is it to me. All those years I often thought of trying to inform people. I thought that maybe we could change the trajectory that the World is going in and free ourselves from the ruling elite and this consensual enslavement. The whole system is against us. They plan day and night for hundreds of years. They have a goal. They are united. While we are living our best lives. We need a person to stand behind. I know I know that sounds crazy but someone has to take charge .

@@soensocomrade600 Ok, let me start replying to you with respect to what you said about me... it is all almost 100% correct. I am almost content to stay at home and spectate, but I do get upset, and I experience that impotent rage - the worst kind. I do have the comfort and privilege to stay at home and watch from the sidelines. That has been my situation for most of my life, not my entire life though. It is highly questionable if it will stay that way for the rest of my life, but it is what it is right now. Now let's turn to you. You seem to be saying that you are the one who will fight and get into the fray, and you seem to claim that all it takes is change of system - social, political, and economic. I don't believe you are correct on either account, but I will allow that you might be right on the first account, I don't know you. Maybe you're the statistically insignificant minority willing to fight, in which case I salute you for your courage. However, what you would fight for, and what you and yours would do with it if you won would just be more of the same, because the system has not been imposed on us by aliens, we produced it through our nature. It is our nature that produces relationships among people, hierarchies, and ultimately social, political, and economic systems. You talk about poverty and people dying on the street. Did you take any of those people in your home, to feed them, give them shelter, share significant portion of your resources with them, and try to change their lives? You have not, and I am speaking to the statistical you, not you personally, and statistics are all that matters when it comes to society. Again, I don't know you. Maybe, you personally are a truly noble person and you're doing all these things. I'll end with a reflection on your last comment. It is not capitalism that is installed in the western world. It is capitalism mixed with socialism, and that is what works best for humans. Pure socialism does not work, evidently, nor does pure capitalism, and communism does not exist. Why do they not work? You guessed it - because of human nature. Socialism destroys human incentives to make something for themselves and feeds their laziness, while capitalism feeds their greed and selfishness with catastrophic results. Unfortunately for socialism, it does nothing to inhibit human greed, selfishness, and desire to dominate others. We shouldn't be blamed for these features of human nature. It's just how we evolved, how life evolved. We have some good traits too, but they are inconsistent and reserved for our loved ones. The danger for the West is that it's moving towards pure capitalism. If it gets too close, and sufficient number of people become desperate, we are going to have revolutions and pitch forks again. Who the hell knows how technology will play into all of this. That's a huge topic of itself.

I used to believe this... until he completely fell for the propaganda he is talking about here, and said during covid that unvaccinated people should be excluded from society, and it would be fine if they starved to death. Apparently he learned nothing from his own life's work. He blindly believed the lies (propaganda) that he had already warned people about! What a piece of trash
