Kind of a scary thought: This strike spooked the Soviets. They wanted to be sure that the coolant pumps on their RBMK reactors would be able to run if, say, the Americans decided to pull a similar stunt, and the facilities lost power. So they created a system that would run the coolant pumps off of the steam turbine inertia in the event of a power loss, keeping the reactor cool until the backup Diesel generators could kick in. After several unsuccessful tests, they tried to test this safety system again on 25 April 1986 at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The rest is history.
@GoobersGaming
@GoobersGaming 5 жыл бұрын
Michael Bradley-Robbins To be fair, the system worked exactly as it should have in Chernobyl, but the supervisor on duty that night wanted to push the system way past what it could handle in power production, ultimately resulting in the movement of control rods out of their slots which allowed unlimited nuclear fission to occur. The system itself worked, it was human negligence and ego that lead to that disaster.
@mbrsart
@mbrsart 5 жыл бұрын
@YourNan If Anatoly Dyatlov hadn't ordered the rods retracted, then the disaster likely wouldn't have happened. To his final breath, he insisted that it was the reactor's fault. But the reality is that his hubris led to bad decisions that bear the lion share of the blame.
@mbrsart
@mbrsart 5 жыл бұрын
@YourNan I'm not saying you're wrong; I'm just saying that we can't eliminate human error from the equation.
@fuzzydunlop7928
@fuzzydunlop7928 2 жыл бұрын
@@mbrsart Definitely not the lion's share. Unfortunately, the inherent design flaws vs. misuse argument has grown needlessly politicized over the years but that those originally on trial were used as scapegoats in order to exculpate the entire Soviet atomic safety culture of blame was something that very quickly came out even before the ultimate collapse of the iron curtain. The design was flawed, the pressures from above within the atomic infrastructure of the Soviet Union was a major problem, and while this manifested in poor safety culture within the control room of reactor 4, the many evident design flaws and even construction issues present in the plant as a whole (improperly laid concrete, use of bitumen on the roofs) point the finger at those pulling the strings - without whom those in the control room would not have made the mistakes they did (some of those mistakes being made without their ability to even comprehend their magnitude). Whatever kind of man Anatoly Dyatlov was - his continuing crucifixion is absolutely overblown, and thanks to HBO this misguided tendency will continue.
@OGA103
@OGA103 2 жыл бұрын
@@fuzzydunlop7928 I agree. Dyatlov was definitely an egotistical a-hole so he makes an easy scapegoat. He made terrible decisions that night but I think it's equally important to understand the critical design flaws of the RBMK and how he and others were led to believe that the type of accident that occurred was literally impossible. But in reality, an accident was just a matter of time.

Dayan got that eye-patch in the most bad-ass way possible. Shortly after the beginning of WWII, Dayan was serving with a British General, Henry Maitland, during the Syria/Lebanon Campaign. Dayan's unit had just finished assaulting a police station that was being held by the Vichy French (translate to Nazis... cause that's what they were). While waiting for reinforcements, Dayan decided to pop up onto the roof to have a look around with his binoculars (you know... like you do). A Vichy French sniper, who just happened to be hiding close by, noticed Dayan and used the opportunity to try and murder him (war... am I right?). The bullet hit Dayan's binoculars, shattering the lens and then sending shards of glass and left-over-bullet into his eye. After suffering the injury, Dayan then had to wait more than six hours before he could be relieved and evacuated (dude was still conscious). With the damage much too severe to attempt to save it, he was fitted for a glass eye almost immediately. For years afterward, Dayan repeatedly insisted on being re-enlisted for combat after having been removed from duty because of the injury. Again... bad-ass...

Fun fact, i actually lived at that site for several months as a U.S. Soldier. My unit guarded the side entrance. Our residence was the old mechanical drafting building, which had a basement for a single HVAC unit... and an inexplicable secret tunnel that let you get in and out of the building without going through the front door. About a meter wide, a meter high. No cables, no pipes, no fans, no lights, no emergency exit signs. Just a concrete tunnel that let you pop out on the side of the building from a small metal hatch. Totally the kind of thing i expect from a place not trying to hide anything!
@WaywardVet
@WaywardVet 5 жыл бұрын
I would agree. The absolutely massive berms around the sides are a testament to safety from both external attack and internal disaster. However, it was flagged by Intel analysis as a clandestine building. Only a few in the sprawling compound were marked as such. By the time I got there, all activities were long since past. It was still amazing to live in such a place.

Some experts have said that producing enough weapons-grade material with this reactor would've taken decades - if it was even feasible in the first place. I think this was even in Wikipedia page about the reactor. Of course, experimenting and gaining knowledge was by itself getting Saddam closer to having a bomb.

Sure, there's a difference between having some soft of nuclear weapon, and an entire weapons program. With all the radioactive materials that went missing after USSR fell apart it's a wonder that nobody has detonated a "dirty bomb".
@Abigail-hu5wf
@Abigail-hu5wf 2 жыл бұрын
@@apinakapina Non-nuclear radiological (NNR) weapons, i.e. dirty bombs, are ultimately kind of a solution looking for a problem most of the time. They've never been used because there's never been a good use-case for them. Really, the only use-case for a NNR weapon would be terrorism, where your goal isn't to conquer territory but just straight-up to spread fear and panic. The bomb itself would render the territory uncapturable by its nature - that's literally the point of using it - and so there's really no military purpose to it. Additionally like all radiological, biological, and chemical weapons, they are fundamentally ineffective against military targets and are *exclusively* useful in taking out civilian targets. While past militaries have done this, modern militaries understand that it's generally not worth their time because it doesn't really do anything. Strategic or morale bombing doesn't really do much to win you a war: bomb the rail lines, not schools. So, only terrorists would use an NNR weapon. The problem with THAT, though, is that it's overkill. After 9/11, most terrorist groups understood that there's only so far you can push the great powers before they go "OK, fuck you, we're fucking invading now" and at that point things change drastically. NNR weapons are so stupidly over-the-top that, generally speaking, only absolute lunatics would use them... and such people don't have access to radiologically dangerous materiel. Dirty bombs are, broadly speaking, something you dream up because you want to think about how bad things can get, but there's really not much of a use-case. Any situation where you want to contaminate an enormous area while spreading disease and death would be better dealt by a salted nuclear weapon instead, which has a concrete strategic benefit that a dirty bomb simply doesn't.

Tell that to the Chinese in the 60's 70's. The scientists still managed build China's first nuclear bomb after Soviets pulled out their support, as well as under internal pressure due to the "culture revolution" (Mao have to personally order protection for the scientists working on the Chinese Nuclear and Space program... the "culture revolution" really went out of control and set China back 10 years back in technological/education progress). I'm not saying this strike is correct in anyway. But if someone is determined enough... it's not unimageable that Iraq could pop out several reactors copied from the French, or even design a more powerful one using material acquired from the French. The thing is, just like later US invasion of Iraq, there was no evidence that Iraq have done either nuclear weapons or other WMD program...

It is easy to tell if a country wants a reactor for electrical power or for nuclear weapons production. If they want electrical power then they would consider a Thorium cycle. It is cheaper and cleaner and it is very difficult to make nuclear weapons with any isotope you get from the reactor. Using a Uranium cycle has much nastier waste products and has a low burn up rate giving lots more waste, but is good at making plutonium, which is good for nuclear weapons manufacture.
@centralintelligenceagency9003
@centralintelligenceagency9003 5 жыл бұрын
Thorium is bred into Uranium 233, with which you can make nukes. You can make a Thorium reactor, especially a molten salt reactor, with a dual purpose: making power and making warheads. There's many ways to design a breeder disguised as a power reactor, and the world police will only know once you pop your first nuke.
@spacecadet35
@spacecadet35 5 жыл бұрын
@@centralintelligenceagency9003 - Yep, you can make U233 into a bomb, especially if you use plutonium or U235 (which defeats the point). And then you have that whole U232 issue. There is a reason everyone makes bombs out of U235 and Plutonium instead of U233.
@spacecadet35
@spacecadet35 5 жыл бұрын
@Gerben van Straaten- What do you mean that thorium is ten years from being usable? It was used in a commercial reactor in the 1970s. That plant showed that the Thorium had 2.5 times the burn up rate of Uranium. And there have been peeblebed reactors that have actually generated power using Thorium. Thorium is ready to go now and has been since the 1980s.
@spacecadet35
@spacecadet35 5 жыл бұрын
@Gerben van Straaten - the first reactor to run thorium was a uranium reactor that had a thorium core for its second refuelling. This produced 50 MW of electrical energy. And kilogram for kilogram of fuel it produced 2.5 times as much as the Uranium, The burn up rate is so high that you do not have to reprocess the fuel. You can either just vitrify it or if you are using pebbles, just stick them in drums for 300 years. Their storage, handling and disposal is much, much easier than using a uranium or plutonium cycle. This was all solved at least 30 years ago.
