The Execution Of Admiral Wilhelm Canaris - Hitler's Treasonous Spymaster

One of the most senior members of the German military intelligence service was Admiral Wilhelm Canaris. He was the Chief of the Abwehr, and willingly subverted Hitler during the Second World War. He passed information to the enemies of the Nazis and would later be arrested for his crimes after being discovered following the July 20th plot. Canaris however was subjected to a brutal and barbaric execution ordeal inside of a concentration camp.

Canaris was no angel but he was no devil either. He was a human which during the Nazi days in Germany was about the best thing that a German could be.

There's only one tiny fragment of film footage of Canaris known to exist, showing him standing saluting among other officers. Very creepy to watch.

Admiral Canaris was a very brave man. If Hitler had been killed in 1933, Germany never would have ended up in such a bad way.

Bonhoeffer wasn't a priest. He was a (protestant) pastor & theologian, engaged to be married before he was arrested. He preached the first Sunday Hitler came to power warning his congregation about him & the trouble he would bring to Germany. He tried to keep preaching, as well as teach other young pastors, but they kept closing him down. I admire him greatly for his faith in God & doing everything he could to try to stop the Nazis.

Bonhoeffer was actually in America twice, 1930 & again for 2 weeks in 1939. He felt he had to return to Germany. He was also unimpressed with the devotion of those in America studying for the ministry. He certainly sacrificed his life willingly and it sounds like his death was worse than first thought.

According to William L. Shirer in his book, “The Rise and Fall of The Third Reich”, Canaris was hanged with piano wire and the film was sent to Hitler to watch.

I wonder what happened to the footage of his execution? Canaris told Spain's dictator Francisco not to join the war fully, that's why Spain only sent the the Blue Division 'volunteers' to the Eastern Front.

Franco didn't need Canaris to tell him what to do. He met Hitler to discuss Spain's role in the war. Hitler told Mussolini that talking to Franco was like pulling teeth. Spain was not in an economic position to go to war, and Spain was completely exposed to the Royal Navy and Air Force. So: just one division of volunteers to fight in the USSR.

The name sounds like Canary Island. That is an Island that is off the coast of Spain and Morocco. Adof Hitler knew he too will be hanged hence he shot himself on the head for a quick suicide death. He does not want to die humiliated for his crimes against humanity.
