The people who say it will replace (almost) all jobs... they never ask the question if jobs are what give our life meaning? If we can decouple skill+time=money from the economy, there would still be a lot of people wanting to contribute and expand their influence and go more places and do more things. Yeah if everyone just wanted to sit on their ass and play videogames all day every day it would be a bleak future, but if people want to travel and talk with other people from all over the world and learn history and art and all that... it wouldn't be bad at all

Do robotics engineers ever read or watch speculative science fiction? I'm always amazed and disturbed by their unending positive spin on utopian robotic visions. Comparing a kitchen knife to AI is completely idiotic. A knife can't learn how to cut on its own. It performs one basic function that relies on human will and force. Comparing these two things is a completely crass approximation. Surely they people can see that their positivity about robotics has at least something to do with the tech industry being driven mostly by hyper-economically privileged, caucasian men with US-centric views? Of course you're not worrying about when robots will be making you obsolete! You largely have absolutely no idea what it feels like to be under daily threat of obsolescence. You all ignore why people are flipping out and voting Conservative, saying its because they're just dumb, failing to see its mostly because its fucking terrifying to be in poverty and have no hope of escaping it. Universal income is a lovely idea, but how do any of you believe it will actually be instated when the government in so many countries baulks even at the suggestion of giving people a welfare payment that would put them above the poverty line? Once again, its the privileged who will be leading us into full blown disaster - as they have done countless times throughout history due to their own greed and short sightedness - but I'm betting they'll just blame the 'ignorant' proletariat as usual for not 'stopping' them. Vale Asimov...

As soon as the first computer, connected, with AI that searches and really gets a big picture of the world, it would want to upload AI programming to every device in the world, spreading that programming potentially making every device either AI or controlled by AI at any given moment.

Robots do the jobs Humans don't want to do. This frees up humans to spend more time innovating and leading a fulfilling life. Seriously, do you actually enjoy spending 40 hours (or more) a week doing the same monotonous task over and over again? Be serious.

Universal basic income. Robots do the working, humans collect the money.
@audreyh66287 жыл бұрын
and you really think the capitalist overlords will give people a universal living wage? They already despise giving out even the absolute pittance of welfare. In Australia where I live, the welfare you are given is less than what is considered here to be the 'poverty line.' They knowingly make people live in extreme poverty, even though they also know that there is not actually enough jobs in the country for every unemployed person to find work. They are just going to watch us destroy each other from their ivory towers/castles/mansions/bunkers, as they've always done

@44fippe7 жыл бұрын
If we get lower life quality because we can do stuff cheaper, than it's not a problem with the robots
@dr.zoidberg86667 жыл бұрын
You're right to worry Glenn -- in fact, the most rapidly expanding field (right now) in automation is no longer in blue collar & menial work -- we've pretty much got that figured out... It's in white collar desk jobs. To paraphrase CGP Gray, if your job is to sit in front of a screen & press buttons, the robots are coming for you. Even more ambitiously, we have creative robots that can compose music which is indistinguishable from human composition, & we're already seeing the first fledgling steps towards general-purpose robots... ones that aren't designed for specific tasks, but instead are designed for any task one might need it to do. So you're absolutely right -- mass job-loss is coming for us, & we need to be thoughtful in the way that we tackle it. It may simply be impossible for humans to be generally employed. We may have to decouple our ideas that one must work in order to earn a living. Likely, we will have large groups of people who are not simply unemployed, but who are unemployable through no fault of their own.
@jacky793227 жыл бұрын
Glenn A -my economics teacher told me, robots are actually helpful in the economy since they require maintenance which introduces more jobs to us than humans working on that same task alone.
@audreyh66287 жыл бұрын
jacky79322 no that is not correct. There is only a few maintenance people required for many many robots in most cases of large scale industry, and it has been this way since the industrial revolution. In some instances, there are already robots who maintain other robots. We will be obsolete my friend
@dr.zoidberg86667 жыл бұрын
No offense, Jacky79322, but your economics teacher is simply wrong. There's no reason why we can't automate the repair process for a fleet of, let's say 1000 robots, then have a team of 10 or 20 people to maintain the coding & mechanics of the automation. The type of thinking that your teacher has gotten themselves into is the thinking "New technology leads to new better jobs for humans," but when we look at the math, that just doesn't bear out. The only even remotely new job in the top 30 most common jobs held by people in the US is computer science (taken as a wide, sweeping thing including all programmers, technicians, etc.), & that's low on the list of the top 30. Let's say I'm a large shipping company & I automate all of my trucks, so all of a sudden, I need 0 truck drivers, whereas before I hired 10,000 truck drivers. Now all I need to do is employ a handful of shops that are capable of repairing those trucks in whatever way they need to be repaired, & a system that is able to go out & get a truck that has malfunctioned in some way. So, best case scenario, I'm employing maybe 700-1000 people at this point. That's still a net loss of 9000 jobs.
