A video about geopolitics of Greenland that doesn't clearly discuss Greenland's relationship to Denmark is strange. Not once was it explicitly mentioned that Greenland is a part of The Kingdom of Denmark (now by choice), which makes Denmark a central player in the arctic too. And because The US has a military base in Greenland, Denmark saves tons of money, when they're paying to NATO. Over the years,, the US saved Denmark and basically Greenland too, not once but twice. I think it's a shame how they are interested in Chinese influence. I hate to see if 25 years from now China cross over and start dragging nets and taking away money from the fishing industries. I don't know why a dollar can influence selling your entire future down the drain but if the influence is there,,why shouldn't the US cut of all aid Let Greenland go. And never protect Denmark, Greenland again and just drop out of Nato and all trade. If Greenland is going to take advantage of the biggest offer then let Chinese or Russia get it. AFTER All there lack of loyalty is obvious. And let them sell there country and future down the drain. As someone in the Space Force, I think you mixed up the intent of Thule Air Base. It's not meant to detect a Russian invasion over the arctic (a crazy idea that should never be attempted in the first place), it's meant as the newer version of the very radars you visited. It's a phased array radar site to detect Russian ICBMs. Due to the shorter distance between Russia and the U.S over the Arctic, Russian nuclear missiles have always been anticipated to fly over the North Pole. Thus, Thule is THE most strategically important base for the U.S in the event of Nuclear war. When it's not detecting missiles though, it's tracking space objects. Hence why it's becoming a Space Force base.

I don't expect that the Space Force folks are doing anything much different than the Air Force folks were doing during my PCS and TAD contractor assignments at Thule. I had two PCS and two TAD assignments there between 1976 and 1994. As best I could tell USAF provided security and communications for the entire base and all US tenants. Beyond that it appeared that there were a couple of officers and enlisted at the various facilities on base to serve as the front facing presence and mainly be contract monitors. The American and Danish contractors always outnumbered the USAF personnel and during my last tour it looked like the Greenlanders were becoming a larger portion of the non-American contractors. Maybe things have changed but it was always less expensive to have contractors than military working many of the jobs at Thule. SF or AF won't matter much.

The great irony is that the association with Denmark is probably more valuable than is realized. Greenland would be wise to maintain connections with Scandinavia even if it becomes completely independent. Small countries in the North that have managed to maintain independence from the whims of the larger powers and actually have outsized influence and power in the world themselves is a model these Nordic countries have mastered.

Especially driving around the gravel roads around the base and taking in the glaciers entering the ocean across the fjord from BMEWS or driving up to the top of P mountain where the lone Picnic table abandoned there was still covered in ice in above freezing temperatures in August where the sun was shining around the clock. And of course the raging river running through the base fed by the melting polar ice cap. Meant to drive out to the ice cap one day but time was short and rumor was the road had been blocked off and it was another 30-60 minute hike from the edge of the road to the ice cap.

Greenland has in many ways a less colonial bind with Denmark than say Puerto Rico does with the US. Not only are all Greenlanders Danish citizens and can work and go to school in mainland Denmark if they so choose and vice versa but they get two sitting members of parliament that get a vote and make up the Government. Puerto Rico has people who can make suggestions in congress but get no real vote. Also Greenland's National Day falls on 21 June where the Greenlandic flag is flown through out the Kingdom of Denmark. Don't remember Puerto Rico or the Virgin Islands getting that recognition

Good document John but you neglect to mention that Greenland, by local consensus via popular referendum, wants to remain a part of the Kingdom of Denmark, despite the perpetual whisper of independence. Although Greenland is a semiautonomous territory, the people there have enough common sense to choose to be part a prosperous, vibrant democracy that annually ranked among the top five most livable countries in the world with low unemployment, excellent infrastructure, free education and healthcare--in many instances much better than those in the US! Just because the majority of indigenous Greenlanders don't have blond hair and blue eyes doesn't meant they don't value democracy, secularism and freedom--just like the continental Danes, since Greenland is officially, culturally a part of Denmark! Think of US territories like Puerto Rico and Guam where locals constantly complained about past and present injustices from the States--rightly so with all the neglects. But at the end of the day, local people there think, act and behave like Americans--because they ARE Americans!

As a Canadian, I'd say this sounds like a whole lot of hype. The arctic is a harsh place. Only super powers can operate up there, or very large companies. It looks to me like there is plenty to go around in the vast arctic, surely US, Russia, China, Eu and others can all be investing in parts of Greenland without fighting being necessary and Greenland can prosper through all the activity and investment.

Fun fact: Icelandic/Scandinavian vikings were actually the first people to inhabit Greenland that still lives there to this day. The first people to ever inhabit Greenland died out. The modern inuit population of Greenland didn't settle there until 200 years after the vikings. Technically the Scandinavians are the native population of Greenland and it rightfully belongs to a Scandinavian country (Denmark).
@Perspectiveon Жыл бұрын
Not true. The viking settlers disappeared around 1450. Lots of vids about it.
@seagoat1918 Жыл бұрын
@@Perspectiveon That doesn't make what I said not true, I didn't say that Scandinavians "continually" or "unceasingly" lived on Greenland to this day. Scandinavians as a people still existed after Greenland was abandoned by the original Norse settlers and Scandinavians do inhabit Greenland today as well.
@quel2324 Жыл бұрын
A huge requisite for being a Native population is continually living in an area. Since the Vikings willingly left. These "ethnic" rights to a certain land don't come from getting there first, they come from towns, cities and/or nomadic settlements existing in a certain area. They come from people living in a place. "This race was living here first" implies "It's not ethical to kick out a race because you come later", it doesn't mean "This race now has permanent claims to the area". Also, even if the right by ethnicity worked how you propose, Denmark would have a claim to Southern Greenland. They never inhabited or colonized the Northern areas until the rediscovery of Greenland in the 18th century, as opposed to the Thule Inuit (and its modern day descendants), which inhabited it since the 1300s, before Norsemen left. Another factor is that they weren't expelled from the island, they willingly left because of the Black Death reaching Norway
@seagoat1918 Жыл бұрын
@@quel2324 "A huge requisite for being a Native population is continually living in an area.", did you just make this up? If your parents leave their house temporarily, then I come along and decide to break in and live there, have your parents (and you as their heir) lost their/your right to their/your own house? Of course not, so why do you go out of your way to be logically inconsistent? There are already universally accepted rights like jus sanguinis that apply rights to land based on ethnicity. Also your evidence for the vikings willingly leaving Greenland is what now? Did you ask them? Is leaving a settlement because of a plague the same as leaving it willingly? Some sources show that the Norse left because the climate became harsher and even attacks from the increasing inuit population. Would you claim that native populations of today who are forced to move because of climate change lose their right to their land?

Since they don't have a lot of industry. Most just fish and fishing products. Which is a narrow market. I sincerely hope she actually knows how much Denmark has given to them.
