As the world gets warmer due to man-made climate change, geopolitical competition is heating up in the arctic. And Greenland is finding itself at the center of this competition, as world superpowers fight each other for economic influence and geopolitical control.

I know you’re a map nerd, Johnny. I remember when I was taught cartography at the University, I’ve been hundred times told about the importance of using the correct and valid data sources for my maps. With all due respect, Johnny, what was the source of data for your maps(country images, to be precise) in your video? Do you consider Crimea as a Russian territory? Do you think it’s correct to ignore international laws and treaties and display territories by de facto control? Thank you

A video about geopolitics of Greenland that doesn't clearly discuss Greenland's relationship to Denmark is strange. Not once was it explicitly mentioned that Greenland is a part of The Kingdom of Denmark (now by choice), which makes Denmark a central player in the arctic too. This video shockingly highlighted the US-centrism - mentioning only US interests and the ones of its rival China.

BRICS seeks to create a new currency, considering gold's historical role as a store of value and medium of exchange. However, the functionality and acceptance of a gold-backed currency in the current global financial system are uncertain. Creating a new currency requires careful consideration of economic, political, and logistical factors.
@JenniferDrawbridge

The discussions and proposals surrounding BRICS nations' potential use of gold are intriguing. People choose to buy gold for various reasons, such as its historical role as a store of value and medium of exchange, its potential as a hedge against inflation or currency devaluation, and its relative scarcity compared to other commodities. Gold also offers diversification benefits to investment portfolios due to its low correlation with stocks and bonds.

I well know, that Denmark isn't a superpower by any means, but since Greenland is part of our realm and have members represented in our Parliament, a bit more mention on Denmarks role in this question would have been nice. A major reason for the US being able to build all those bases was Denmarks Nato membership and alliance with the USA. We the Danish had no reasons to complain about them strengthening the defense against a possible Soviet threat.

And because The US has a military base in Greenland, Denmark saves tons of money, when they're paying to NATO. As someone in the Space Force, I think you mixed up the intent of Thule Air Base. It's not meant to detect a Russian invasion over the arctic (a crazy idea that should never be attempted in the first place), it's meant as the newer version of the very radars you visited. It's a phased array radar site to detect Russian ICBMs. Due to the shorter distance between Russia and the U.S over the Arctic, Russian nuclear missiles have always been anticipated to fly over the North Pole. Thus, Thule is THE most strategically important base for the U.S in the event of Nuclear war. When it's not detecting missiles though, it's tracking space objects. Hence why it's becoming a Space Force base.

The great irony is that the association with Denmark is probably more valuable than is realized. Greenland would be wise to maintain connections with Scandinavia even if it becomes completely independent. Small countries in the North that have managed to maintain independence from the whims of the larger powers and actually have outsized influence and power in the world themselves is a model these Nordic countries have mastered.

Fun fact: Icelandic/Scandinavian vikings were actually the first people to inhabit Greenland that still lives there to this day. The first people to ever inhabit Greenland died out. A huge requisite for being a Native population is continually living in an area. Since the Vikings willingly left. These "ethnic" rights to a certain land don't come from getting there first, they come from towns, cities and/or nomadic settlements existing in a certain area. They come from people living in a place. "This race was living here first" implies "It's not ethical to kick out a race because you come later", it doesn't mean "This race now has permanent claims to the area". Also, even if the right by ethnicity worked how you propose, Denmark would have a claim to Southern Greenland. They never inhabited or colonized the Northern areas until the rediscovery of Greenland in the 18th century, as opposed to the Thule Inuit (and its modern day descendants), which inhabited it since the 1300s, before Norsemen left. Another factor is that they weren't expelled from the island, they willingly left because of the Black Death reaching Norway

@@quel2324 "A huge requisite for being a Native population is continually living in an area.", did you just make this up? If your parents leave their house temporarily, then I come along and decide to break in and live there, have your parents (and you as their heir) lost their/your right to their/your own house? Of course not, so why do you go out of your way to be logically inconsistent? There are already universally accepted rights like jus sanguinis that apply rights to land based on ethnicity. Also your evidence for the vikings willingly leaving Greenland is what now? Did you ask them? Is leaving a settlement because of a plague the same as leaving it willingly? Some sources show that the Norse left because the climate became harsher and even attacks from the increasing inuit population. Would you claim that native populations of today who are forced to move because of climate change lose their right to their land?

As a Dane, I genuinely don’t want to have my country associate with any area that views us as oppressors. Not because I think they’re right to view us as such, but because I am so fucking done with their shit.

I found a new way here to introduce your sponsor. usually I skip that part but this time as you were moving around while talking about your sponsor it kept me engaged. maybe for your upcoming videos, you can try out this method where your visual presentation differs from whatever you are talking about the sponsor and small short clips about the sponsor added in between. in this way, I will be engaged with your interesting visual ( video side) while listening to some part of your audio ( sponsor comments ) just a thought/ free advice :p

Nice video, but I've got two issues with it. First, I don't really get the confusion between the economic consequences of the opening of the North Corridor, and the military influences of the region. Obviously, those two things are linked, but they're not the same, unlike the way they've been presented here. But my biggest complaint is that this video feels very americano-centred. It sounds like Greenland is a virgin land, open to any new influences, when actually it is still (willingly) a part of Denmark. Greenland might have autonomy, but its strongest ties are for now still very much European. And Europe knows this, and is not going to let its influence slip away to either the US or China, especially now that it's united in the EU. And in fact, discussing the arctic without mentioning that the biggest usable area of the Arctic Ocean is shared between Iceland (Europe), Greenland (Europe through Denmark) and Norway (Europe and European Union even) feels like a huge blindspot. Europe knows it has a huge role to play in the race for the Arctic, and it's not ready to drop the ball on this, be it for economic, military, ecology or other reasons (especially now that it has a war with Russia on its hands). Discussing the influence on Greenland without discussing those are really the most important players in the arena is quite baffling.
