Here’s a little story time of my own. My great grandmother was a first generation Irish-German-American living in Chicago during Prohibition. She was a professional cook who worked every now and again for different small-time restaurants in the Westside. While she originally cooked German food, she also dabbled in other cuisines as well. One day a man walked into the restaurant she was working at at the time and ordered beef roast, my great grandmother’s favorite dish. He liked it so much that he wanted to offer his compliments to her face to face, and when she came to his table he offered her a decent chunk of money to become his personal cook. She politely declined, and the two of them never met again. The man was Al Capone. Makes me wish I was better at cooking.

God damn that’s insane! I live in Kansas and my family have been here since 1878. My fathers side of the family has always been the “let’s get drunk and have fun with each other” while my other side of the family is more of a “let’s sit around and talk after church” type of family. Any ways a few months ago My dads telling me about our grandpa who as it turns out. Was one of if not the first American to be arrested under prohibition. This is because in my moms town, the town actually passed a law that prohibited alcohol. A few years before federal prohibition! And when they released him he asked for his bottle of whisky back 😹.

Hey Mr. Beat, as a Kansan I think you'll like this story. I went to KU in the early 1970s. At that time, the drinking age for "3-2" beer was 18. So my college days were well-lubricated. You had to be 21 to buy "strong" beer. I didn't care. 3-2 beer, consumed in sufficient quantity was fine for achieving the state of consciousness that we college kids were aiming to achieve. In those days there were no bars that sold liquor. Kansas had a law that prohibited "open saloons". However, "private clubs" were legal. A true private club was one where you brought your own bottle of liquor and they put it on the shelf for when you came to visit. The private clubs made money selling "setups", i.e., the mixes that would produce a cocktail from your liquor. My recollection is that liquor laws were set by the state but counties could create more restrictive rules. Douglas County, where Lawrence and KU were located, adhered to the state law. Franklin County, where nearby Ottawa was located, had more restrictive rules. I think they didn't allow 3-2 beer sales in watering holes like we had at KU. So as recently as the 1970s, vestiges of Prohibition were still around -- in your native state. Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

I can agree with this, by adding, that the moralists are at it again on the abortion issue. They want the fetes of a woman to be the property of the federal government by coming up with an out and out ban of abortion. I support abortion in principle as a freedom woman have or should have with parts of their body.

The area I grew up in, Patrick, Henry, and Franklin County VA was notorious for illegal moonshine. My buddy's old house used to be a bootlegger house. If you go in the basement you can see where they rigged the shower to make bootleg. Not to mention the amount of broken moonshine jars around the yard.

Here is the problem: alcohol can be purchased in many drug stores. Should marijuana be sold in drug stores, where it will be more accessible to children? Call me square, but I believe there is a huge segment of the population that does not have least idea where to obtain marijuana.

My grandfather on my mothers side was a clandestine maker of a thick German style wine made out of Concord grapes. He had several rows of grape vines on the property guarded by a vicious dog. One day , I ventured into the vineyard area and the dog attacked me. He bit me in the neck in an area close to the Juglar vein and I was rushed to the hospital in time. My grand pa killed the dog and ever after bore a secret dislike for me. I found out when he died at 96. He wrote me out of his will. My father warned me about that years ago but I did not believe him. I think to this day that people should buy their own wine rather than make it themselves.

It was a bad idea. These are some of the reasons why they reversed it: (1) They couldn't do anything to stop it. It was unenforceable. (2) The wrong people were getting richer and richer from it. (3) Most of the people in prison were there because of bootlegging.(Press Read more) (4) Tax revenue from alcohol sales was being lost. There was one advantage that came from it. Crime was at a an all time low. Even today, 70% of the people in prison in today are there because of alcohol or drugs. It comes about from either direct or indirect contact.

The reason for mass alcohol consumption back in the day was because clean water was hard to come by, but alcohol was sterilized, and therefore clean, and safer to drink
@johngreen35433 жыл бұрын
The process of making alcoholic drinks can require a distillation or a fermentation process which kills off the bacteria present in unclean water used. One of Englands greatest medical investigators a Dr Snow found that a large number of cholera victims got their water from various free water outlets in London. But, those who worked at the local Beer factories did not catch the cholera. It was a massive statistical project, which turned out to be one of the greatest feats of the just emerging field of Statistics

When not working moonshiner would race one another for fun this became the beginning of N.A.S.C.A.R.

Mr Beat, was it really necessary to amend the Constitution to establish Prohibition? Couldn't Congress prohibit it, as it does, say, marijuana? As I see it, the 18th Amendment forced Congress and the States to ban it.

same thing would happen with gun control, bad people will earn money and power while good people will not be able to defend themselves
@fuzzydunlop79286 жыл бұрын
Yes, because good people were defending themselves with alcohol? This analogy is a little strained, though generally I agree that it could cause a cottage industry of black market manufacturers of things like 'high-capacity' magazines (things which are essentially spring-steel or plastic components that could be relatively easily made), there wouldn't be high enough demand to cause a great degree of legitimate "backyard gunsmithing" though. It's not that people would make firearms or ammunition, but rather there are more than enough guns already in circulation in the country to supply a black market for decades to come and since it would be handled illegally and off the books tracking these sales would be much more difficult - this is besides the point though since 'gun control' doesn't call for the wholesale banning of firearms anyway, just more common-sense regulations (like mentally ill people not being able to purchase firearms). That said, the comparison between prohibition and firearm ownership is a flawed one - more people drank then and drink now than will ever care about firearms. Even in the most gun-friendly country in the world.
