Күн бұрын

Considered a charismatic, and thoughtful leader, Samora Machel was a military commander and the revered first post-colonial president of Mozambique upon independence in 1975. Machel was faced with the unenviable task of building his country during a civil war. This war was between Machel’s Frelimo and the Rhodesian and Apartheid Regime sponsored Renamo.
In this episode of African Biographics we look at the life and legacy of Samora Machel and a brief explanation of the Mozambican Civil War.

I am a Zimbabwean and I was young when both the Moza civil war and Zimbabwe war of independence was fought. It is impossible for us Zimbabweans to think of our independence and redemption without Samora Machel. I was in High School when he died, and the pain we still feel about this loss hurts us so deeply. The man was a natural leader, and Mozambicans were led by those who loved them

growing up in Mutare with the Smith regime in power it meant a lot to me, listening to Voice of Zimbabwe, broadcast from Maputo (on the days when Rhodesia did not block the broadcast). Samora was a hero in those days. Actually it meant so much to us that Mozambique was fighting alongside Zanla. Post-independence, however, things did not go well. Samora did not unite his country, in fact he went out of his way to divide it. Some people say it was the Rhodesian's creating the divide. Sure, they tried. Actually I think Samora did that all by himself.

I look at the relative peace I enjoy living in South Africa...and cannot help but think deeply on how it was achieved...who contributed to it for me to enjoy...Africa has bled a lot..we are a traumatized people..the things we do to each other as inheritance from colonialism are just too much..looking at all the civil wars that have taken place...I am thankful for those who fought for us to be here...I owe my relative peace to all those Africans who seeked to free Africa and died in the name of freedom.

When I was young I grew up in a rural town in Eastern Zambia ( Chadiza-which is within reach of the border area between Mozambique and Zambia) during the rule of Kenneth Kaunda in the early 90's, the RENAMOs would sneak into Zambia and loot the villages...there was a time they even reached our town and we had to sleep at the police station...and sometimes our Zambian commandos would drive trucks full of dead RENAMOs...it was an interesting time

I may not agree with the economic policies President Machel put in place in his country, but I can always respect a leader who believes in doing good for the people. Similarly, it is to Botha's shame that he didn't uphold his own deal that he forced on Machel, and it wouldn't surprise me that this double-crossing spirit helped turn the world against his regime even faster. When a South African leader makes John Vorster look trustworthy, you know they've hit a new low!

Very informative. What caught my attention the most is that he didn't use his position to enrich himself. He was a liberator of the Mozambique people, very good orator and had a passion to liberate the people from colonialism. Any time a communist touches something it turns to mud. Frelimo made lots of mistakes and they are responsible for driving Mozambique into the ground after independance. My man, you have some facts total wrong, about Samora Machelle's itinerary. If he was in Zambia as you said, is flight would have been via the province's of: Tete, Manica e Sofala, Inhambane and final to Maputo. No, he was flying from Congo where he had a meeting with Mobuto, whom e told him not to fly that day and also offer his own aircraft for him to fly back. The aircraft was a Russian made aircraft pilot by Russians which all survived the accident. The aircraft went down ( forced landed) near the SA border (in Mpumalanga Province SA) and Swaziland border. The 3 Russian Pilots did survived with other 9 you have mentioned. We talking about the south of SA and Mozambique - Maputo province. The Russians they where not happy with the accord of Komatipoort between Mozambique and SA government. They, the Russian in the same way did not like the way Agostinho Neto, who was building the bridge with the west. He also, was assassinated for that. In 1985 a Cuban Dr. that I meet in Angola told me that there was no need for Agostinho Neto to go to Russia for treatment, she told me that his condition could have been dealt within the Angola health/hospitals which had Cuban, Russian and Sweden doctors which were taking care of him prior... When Frelimo took over Mozambique, it was self sufficient in basic foods. By the end of 1974 Moz. had a +- 20 million head of cattle.in the all country. Eduardo Mondlane was assassinate in a beach cottage were he was with a woman other than his American wifey. Mondlane wanted to destroy the Cahora Bassa dam but the majority of the Frelimo leaders did not agree with it. The 100million dollars left to be paid on the Cahora Bassa the Portuguese government paid for it in full. I'm a mulungo that was raised in Mozambique, Lourenco Marques-Maputo. Get the facts checked before writing your comments on something which you are not familiar with. I know the Mozambique history better than you and some Mozambicans.
