J.M. BROWNING understood the cartridge more than he is given credit. The guns were always built around the cartridge.

The 1911's "Tilting Barrel" is a mechanism to delay the release of the slide from the barrel, this allowed a more powerful cartridge to be used than a straight blowback would cope with.

Perfect if you like hammer bite! I have an M1911 made in 1918. And you have to be careful about how you grip it. The Hipower is the same way.

It’s not the most hi-tech, light weight, or possibly most reliable these days but it’s shelf life & anything our military, law enforcement, the criminals uses til this day is iconic not to mention it’s just a dead sexy gun still the slickest side arm til this day. A pimped out glock next to a basic 1911 still wins in my book.

It was developed only because the .38 cannot bring a Filipino down. Thank you for mentioning the Filipino-american war. Man-Stopper. hahahaha Because back then we carried knives. You had powerful handguns, we have and still have sharper knives.

The Philippine Moro Juramentados were dedicated and fanatical fighters, devout Muslims, and would mentally and physically prepare themselves for death in battle. They often took hallucinogenic drugs as well. Such fighters proved extremely difficult to kill because they would shrug off pain that would normally incapacitate an average soldier. While the .45ACP was developed largely to deal with such opponents, the truth was the US Army's .30-40 Krag rifles weren't always effective at stopping a Juramentado in his tracks either.
@scooterbob44323 жыл бұрын
The Philippine Moros have not been fully conquered by the Spaniards, by the Americans, by the Japanese or even by the current Philippine government. They are still in Mindanao and are now equipped with FAL 308 fully automatic battle rifles or AK 47s and their ever loaded sharp bolos (machetes).

Because I like a little bit of historical irony, I’ve written a novella that has a main character that is of Filipino descent and carries an M1911 as his trademark weapon. While I don’t intend to confirm nor deny this, it is rumored that his lineage is from the Philippine Moros that fought the Americans in 1899.

Are there any statistics on estimates of how many people this gun has killed? I know there are studies of overall weapon types - this percentage killed by artillery, this percentage by small arms, etc. But particular weapons? Has someone read 100 after battle reports and extrapolated perhaps?

Interesting that on a 1911 the slide stop requires either breaking the firing grip or using the offhand to release the slide when reloading. I guess the Calvary guys just broke the firing grip to release the slide?

Speed of reloading, during sustained Moro swarms attacks, was the biggest advantage of the 1911 over any revolver. 2 seconds to reload a .45 1911. 30 seconds for a .45 Peacemaker. Everyone is always hung up on the caliber size killing power. That was only half of the issue.
@gunnarkvinlaug72263 жыл бұрын
Well, between 1873 and 1911 they invented both a swing out sylinder and speedloaders for revolvers.
@mburk83293 жыл бұрын
@@gunnarkvinlaug7226 Still significantly slower than an automatic. Modern speed loaders for revolvers are really fast. But back then, for the Navy .38 ,they were essentially a block of wood with holes in them to hold the bullets in the shape of the cylinder.

A bust to the american ego is that the Luger P08 9mm is accualy concidered a better pistol, but was to expencive to produce to make it worth for big military contracts. Instead it was more used as a personly, highranked officers or spesial personell, td Gestapo, gun. And the 9mm Parabellum amo is nearly as powerfull as 45 ACP in close combat, and would be the amo for the next devolepment of the M1911 A1, the Browning High Power of 1935!
@jimbob4654 жыл бұрын
The luger is unreliable and complicated compared to the 1911. No one with a knowledge of firearms would call a luger superior. You yourself have no reasons just a blanket statement that no one agrees with....
