The closest thing Ireland has to our Republican Party, and in terms of membership numbers proportionally as big, can't get a majority in their Parliament, first, because the founder of the party died; second, because party members in said Parliament were proven to be so bad at math the consensus was they shouldn't be trusted with running a whole government. This last having happened four years before the Great Recession in '08. We're minor league compared to the Irish. 😜

Fun fact. St. Patrick is actually more associated with the color blue than with the color green. He earned the green part because he used to tie shamrocks to his robs since he often used them as a metaphor for the holy trinity, each leaf of the clover representing one person of the God head. However, his order and he himself wore blue robes of a lighter shade. While we're on the topic of the whole blue green thing, since the twelfth century, Ireland's national color was blue. You can see this for instance in the ancient Irish standard, a golden harp on a blue background. However, in more recent times, Ireland has become more associated with the color green due to the IRA. Just some interesting facts about Ireland and St. Patrick (I'm Irish-American).

There are few "FACTS" when it comes to Patrick,(if any) it is not known where he came from. Most believe it was somewhere in Britain but it cannot be ascertained for certain where he was really from, however some even postulate that he may be from Brittany. Some say he wasn't real at all, merely a fabrication or origin myth to unite all Irish Christians behind one powerful figure. Some say he is a mixture of three different people. The only thing we know for certain is that he was not the first to bring Christianity to Ireland.

I went to Belfast in August, I had a fantastic time there. As someone who grew up unaware of the situation from 1969-1998, I first heard of Northern Ireland as a result of the signing of the Good Friday Agreement, I wanted to see for myself what it is like there. One of the aspects of the agreement that got my attention, was that by voting for peace, people were being asked to vote for the release of their loved one's killer. All political prisoners were to be released. It really struck me how much Belfast has changed (looking at pictures from the news anyway) for the better. I filmed my stay in Belfast and divided it into 3 parts, feel free to check it out as you please. like your videos by the way, keep them up, best, Simon

+sbaker190189 That's why we (Protestants) would undo it all in the morning so to say. The recent activity by the IRA have shown and in the recent MI5 report that the IRA did not go away like the said they had, the IRA army council still retain control over Sinn Fein. The Protestant people of Northern Ireland were sold a lie. We have been attacked by Sinn Fein telling us to move on and forget about the troubles but yet they still hold their Easter Rising commemorations and remember their 'Martyr' Dead. Sinn Fein have told that many lies and spins that I think they start to believe them themselves. I think Republicans are treading a dangerous road because even the moderate Protestants and Unionists are sick to the death of the IRA bombing and disrupting our lives that one more straw can break the camels back. The retaliation will be ruthless and relentless.
@SiVlog1989
@SiVlog1989 8 жыл бұрын
+Pagan Lord the first stretch of road I traveled on, on the shuttle bus from George Best Belfast City Airport, I traveled through a unionist area, and saw more Union Jacks concentrated in individual areas than I see in the entire area of England I live in, greater London. Even the area around where I stayed (Dublin Road, Belfast, about 5 minutes walk from City Hall) I didn't have to walk far to see more Union Jacks. I would like to read your opinion, (don't worry, I will not express one view or another, purely asking for devils advocate purpose) what do you feel when there's news broadcast during marching seasons about sectarian clashes on marches routes?
@paganlord9493
@paganlord9493 8 жыл бұрын
sbaker190189 I believe that the reason for so many Union Flags in areas is that of two reasons. 1. The people here are much more patriotic and fervent in their country as at all times our position in the country is unstable. England will never be removed from the UK however at any time Northern Ireland may be and so I believe this is a sign of loyalty to a government that would probably give us away. 2. The people in these areas could be intimidated. I know a place called Latt outside Republican Newry and they have a ridiculous amount of flags and signs, however the main reason for this is that they are constantly under intimidation and threat with the most recent shooting happening about 3 weeks ago. The flags are to lay out a kind of border or 'No-go' area and give a sense of security to these people who feel helpless in the relentless attacks of the IRA. Onto the second part of your answer. Being an Orange man I am ashamed and sorrowful at the same time at these clashes in the street. I am ashamed that people and supporters of my Organisation would bring it into so much disrepute, however the fat that a biased Parades Commission is now ruling over the parades in Northern Ireland leads to the fact that many parades, which have marched for 150 years are now being stopped due to Catholics moving into areas and then requesting them to be stopped. The Protestant people are people of Tradition and don't like change. We have accepted Murderers into Government however it seems more and more ground is being concede to Terrorist Republican movements that suddenly it becomes effective to carry out violence. I feel that our culture and Identity is being eroded by people who wish to destroy us and use 'Equality' as a 'Trojan Horse' as Sinn Fein President said 'We will break these Bas***ds with the Trojan Horse of Equality' My people are being attacked on all sides telling us to move on and forgive and forget. We have not even had an apology for the murders carried out by those who sit in Government.

+Pagan Lord only reason I asked was that (as I said in my original comment) I wanted to travel to Belfast to see for myself what the place is like and to research about the goings on from 1969 to 1998. The positive impact that Belfast had on me was such that I will one day quite happily return, exploring more of the city and the rest of Northern Ireland for that matter, than I got the chance to in August 2015. Genuinely, thank you for your opinion. My stay in Belfast I recorded as 3 vlogs & one slideshow (all of which are on my channel, feel free to have a look). best Simon

A friend of mine who served in the troubles (RUC) had death threats coming through his door atvan alarming rate, so much so that he was forced to move city. I lived trough the troubles in NI and I can say that times have changed and we shouldn't be represented as a country by those minority members of the "modern" paramilitaries as we have moved on and became united as Northern Irish people. The country in my opinion would be much better ruled by les extreme parties (anyone but SF and DUP). My friend now lives in an integrated area and is on the BoG in an Integrated school and I think it's time the whole country becomes one big integrated society. Sorry Ramble Rant complete.

My dad went to NI during the troubles he was military police so I'm kind of biased tbh, one of the biggest stories he told me was of a officer of the RUC he got to know , after he left he found out that the IRA had kidnapped and raped his wife and daughter in the end his daughter got pregnant and both her and his wife commited suicide, both sides did horrible things. The media treats people like my dad has criminals even here in England , when all his job was to stop both sides from killing each other but In the end the IRA attacking the soldiers only caused a hate to begin to boil in some of the soldiers , my dad saw this happening first hand, a IRA road bomb caused severe damage to my dad and ended his military career and caused issues he's still suffering from today, but not once my dad has said he hates the Irish he was just doing his job.

I live in the Republic of Ireland. Even though the troubles have ended and there is no more violence you have to respect the people in the north wanting to stay tied to Britain. They are the people living there so it is there choice. I think one day the North will unite with the south but it will probably be a half a century until it happens. As long as they are happy you should respect that.

@ciangargan

+MIC2077 See the reason the north doesn't want to is that it is a protestant majority and the north feels more like a part of Britain than Ireland. The north or Ireland had a plantation century's ago where people from Scotland and parts of England emigrated to the north. So a high percentage of the populations descendants were Scottish or English.

I hope I'm not considered one of those. Maybe I should explain. My dad's side is Ulster Scots (though he denied having any Irish at all until my adulthood), my mom's is Catholic from Longford. Not surprisingly, I was brought up favouring an all-island Irish nation, autonomous and free from GB. I'm no longer keen on it if the majority in the North want to remain in the UK. I fancy myself an Irish nationalist but I'm also amenable to the views of the majority in the North. I could easily side with either tradition, but the wheel of history tells me my original instincts are right.

Adam Mc Garrity The only reason that England was so desperate to maintain authority in Ireland was because of the French. If the French had arrived to aid the United Irishmen, chances are that sooner or later, with the then growing paranoid concern of a French Empire dominating the world, Ireland would have eventually became a military base for a French armada, a stepping stone for the French to finally launch an invasion attempt against Britain. This was always a concern of the British, the primary reason they didn't want to give Ireland up.

Yeah and many people suffered deaths, damage, occupation and so much more from the IRA, believing their doing a deed! If there are people giving you trouble report it to the PSNI, shouldn't matter really if you're from Londonderry/Derry, Lisburn or Belfast.
@StealthyAuto
@StealthyAuto 7 жыл бұрын
Um... yeah I do! I'm British and Irish (and proud of it). The IRA are the lowest of the low, not acknowledging any agreements and not truly knowing about the history of the Irish Free State and 1910 Irish Elections before it. The IRA are illegal in both Republic of Ireland and UK and have been for many, many years! When they bomb places (like they have, e.g. Omaha Bombings) and commit mass murder, in reality they don't always care if they're Catholics or not and "knee capping" drug dealers in Londonderry/Derry and Belfast believing they're doing good for the community. They make Irish/British people look sick in N. Ireland and Ireland, and glad their occupation is over!

Not going to pretend that there wasn't any involvement with the British Army/RUC in the UDA/UVF between the 1960s and 1990s. But to what extend is not that clear, In my opinion despite me being a British and Irish Unionist I still class them as a terrorist group, just like the United Kingdom and Ireland does! I have taken a clear look at the Irish General Election that took place in 1918, and believe that steps made there later built new relations between Irish Free State and the UK. Some people at the time wanted just more "autonomy" within the area and not a whole country outside of the UK, but majorities added up. You know... I meant the bombings that happened in Omagh, Northern Ireland, UK in 1998.

+Mr. Arachnid luckily most of the tension is fairly low for...i'll say 90% of the population, 95 if i want to be daring (note what i say is based on my observations). most people in the south no longer care about the partition all that much and political violence is abhorred. in border counties (i live in one) there are so many personal and business connections that there's little tension either. it's only when people act like dicks about the situation that there tends to be an issue. the big problems i find are in the areas worst afflicted by the troubles in the north where a sometimes uneasy truce tends to prevail. things do tend to boil over at times, especially on the 12th of july.

ziggy gowdy while I know the phrase is often associated with the violent acts of the IRA etc, I see it simply as a national sentiment and doesn't necessarily have any violent undertones. It simply means 'our day will come', the day when Ireland is United again. It is not an inherently violent or provocative phrase. Many people want s United Ireland and are anti-violence.
