Dana International. A transgender woman from Israel who have won the Eurovizion contest in 1998. Openly trans and a major hit maker since the early 1990's, she is a household name in Israel. Her music is mostly pop, dance and pure fun (and funny, she's very clever) but she dosn't shy away from heavier subjects. She is INCREDIBLE. Although some of her dance stuff from the 90's haven't aged all that well she is an ICON

It also talks about his love for Lola, and how she is an oasis of love and safety in a crazy world. It was written in 1970, so for its time it was VERY progressive. @Zim Babwe yeah but also being trans is an incredibly distinct experience and will very clearly impact the art,, like,, i dont vibe with this dismissal of identity in fields that concern art that comes directly outta marginalized communities. The creation is impacted by the artist, and yeah death of the author is cool and all (it's how i connect art made by cis people to my own experiences after all) but i feel like it's either ignorant or dishonest to try and act like the artists' experiences and directions do not meaningfully impact the art. It comes across as erasive to the significance of art as a cultural and political tool in the first place. Like you can't say "jazz isnt about the racial identity of the artist it's about the creation" because black liberation was a fundamental driving force behind jazz as a movement yknow?

Syd Barrett brought us "Arnold Layne." Roger Waters said , paraphrased: "the song is about a man who happens to dig wearing women's clothes....a lot of people do it...we should face up to reality..." Syd himself was dressed by his girlfriends in feminine clothes and make up. He was an influence on the young Marc Bolan, who emulated his image and became a full blown star. Alice Cooper (the band) were dressed by Girls Together Outrageously, a performance art group formed of various groupies....they entered the gender debate quite early. Bowie learned a few things from them. Brian Eno, then just known as "Eno" was one of the most flamboyant artists to don make up and ostrich feathers....as alien as the sounds he created.

Gender dysphoria is the feeling of dread, stress and unease. Not every person that suffers from gender incongruence experiences dysphoria, i.e. it is not a requirement that must be present in order to receive transgender healthcare. See also: Gender Incongruence definition, ICD11.
@scarl2t5 жыл бұрын
nifela Could you explain what “gender incongruence” is then?
@nifela5 жыл бұрын
According to the WHO, ICD-11 defines gender incongruence as follows: "Gender Incongruence of Adolescence and Adulthood is characterized by a marked and persistent incongruence between an individual´s experienced gender and the assigned sex, which often leads to a desire to ‘transition’, in order to live and be accepted as a person of the experienced gender, through hormonal treatment, surgery or other health care services to make the individual´s body align, as much as desired and to the extent possible, with the experienced gender. The diagnosis cannot be assigned prior the onset of puberty. Gender variant behaviour and preferences alone are not a basis for assigning the diagnosis."

I feel like it's a huge oversight not to mention Wendy Carlos, even if she wasn't a pop musician herself she helped popularise electronic music in a big way and modern pop music wouldn't sound the same without her at all.

I'm glad this exists, but I could have done without the deadnaming. They were doing so well for most of the vid and then 'born (male name)' right in the middle. Even if Laura Jane Grace doesn't mind, which would be unusual, trans people watching this are likely to have a bad reaction. Otherwise thanks for giving me awesome musicians to look up and listen to.
@treyroberson72965 жыл бұрын
Deadnaming mostly refers to when people call a transitioned person by their old name in a derogatory fashion but referring to their past accomplishments by the name they went by at the time (especially with an asterisk) is fine. Idk I feel like the concept of “deadnaming”attempts to negate everything they accomplished before they transition. Like Tom Gabel got me into punk, Bruce Jenner got me into fitness. I don’t feel like it takes away from Laura Jane or Caitlyn, it adds to their story. I get it though, don’t be a dick to people that are just trying to figure themselves out. Respect, just different opinion

Everyone always skips over "Lola." While it seems like Ray Davies is playing it for laughs, but behind the story of the naive farm boy who falls in love with a Transgender has always seemed nonjudgmental. It also has a very sweet heart to it as the farm boy actually falls for Lola. It was the first Top 10 about Trans even in the Conservative US of 1970. Plus the fact it was based on personal experience as Ray even dated Candy Darling for a short period.
