Quick Note: I referred to Ace in the Hole as a “financial and commercial failure”, but what I meant to say was a “financial and critical failure”.

Ace in the Hole is a masterpiece and still relevant today.

this is one of the best directors of all time. When you want to know everything about movie techniques - watch Hitchcock. When you want to know everything about human relationships - watch Billie Wilder.

Great video! I would really appreciate if you did a beginner's guide to Indian cinema (not just Hindi) and some Indian directors, I think there is a lot in Indian cinema for you to explore and commentate on.

I love this videos since I'm on my personal film history journey his film sounds very interesting! Even if I normally like more visual movies I think I'm gonna start with Sunset Blvd or Double Indemnity!

@@kubricklynchUpdate I've seen Sunset Boulevard and it was great but it wasn't until Some Like it Hot(one of the best comedies I've seen) that Wilder really stood out to me and then I watched Double Indemnity and wow! it's one of the best thrillers I've seen. I was in the edge of my seat the whole film! Also The Apartment is one of my favourite classic Hollywood films. I guess I've grown to love not just stunning visuals but also a great screenplay so now I'm a huge Wilder fan!

A type of lighting that uses stark contrasts between light and dark. The name is Italian and comes from 16th century painting. It had been the trademark of painter Caravaggio and had become wildly popular among 16th and 17th century European painters.

Hitchcock's films do not stand up like Wilder's. Watch any of his classics they resonate with today. Only Rear Window stands for Hitchcock. I don't think ANY director can say oh I made the greatest comedy ever "some like it hot." Oh, I made the 2 greatest film noir movies "Double Indemnity" and "Sunset BLVD." Oh, arguably the greatest dramedy of all times "The Apartment." The greatest social/media commentary of all time "Ace in Hole." I love Rear Window, but everything else is dated. Some like it Hot and the Apartment , for example, watch it, it is nuanced and sophisticate and make us think even to this day. I really don't se that with Hitchcock. INMO. :)
