I am in awe of how you are able to handle issues, prioritize and execute your plans. You and your sister work well together. Setting an anchor in that depth free diving is TOUGH and you did it. Rowing your dingy and pulling your boat was amazing. You are a talented, beautiful, resourceful, wise and fun lady. If I had the money I would buy you a brand new boat of your dreams. You have earned it.

Hi Holly, The exhaust elbow is always clogging on diesel powered boats. The carbon build up can be avoided by revving the engine at 2,500 to 3,000 revs for the last 3 to five minutes before you shut down. That will burn off the carbon which builds up when running at low speeds. It will also clog up the raw water cooling of the exhaust elbow so should be regularly checked and cleaned, say every six months or sooner with regular use. I keep a spare elbow. André in Sydney

A repeatedly cracked exhaust manifold is due to high exhaust gas temperature. The high exhaust gas temperature is usually caused by a bad exhaust valve (cracked/burned valve, broken spring, bad seal), improperly set valve lash, or improper timing. With the engine running, remove the oil cap and see if you have a lot of pressure coming out (put the cap over the fill port upside down and see if it blows off), if not, timing is your problem.

It’s not unusual for exhaust manifolds to crack especially on older engines. I wouldn’t be surprised if the previous repair was a weld and that weld has failed. Hopefully the shop you go to can replace it with a new part or fabricate a new one for you. If this one is re-welded it’ll fail in a relatively short time…and most definitely at the worst time. Good luck.

PSPs! If you put a 5 horsepower motor and bracket on back. You can have the choice to use diesel or gas depending on your rations and availability. Do not not get a 9 horsepower because they are too heavy. 5 horsepower long shaft. With a charging system. And I have to absolutely commend you on your free dive abilities. Once I get around 20 25 feet. It's too much pressure on me time to go home.
@californiakayaker

Well, that manifold is a part that has to be replaced a lot. You could see that connection, I believe that is actually the input of the sea water from the water cooler ? So, its that perfect scenario where warmed up sea water is mixed with hot gases from your engine and corrodes that pipe "manifold". If I end up with one of these engines I'm going to try to have all of those parts with me because they are designed to fail. I've seen a few sailors (very few) design a completely different set up rather than doing this exhaust gas/sea water mix but the changes were somewhat oomplex. The nicest one was the guy that took basically a radiator and ran all of the fresh water cooling water through it and then engineered it so the radiator (like a car radiator but they use a different name) was stuck out in the ocean and cooled by the ocean . What a great way to do it. Cleaning it might be a biaetch. I think this might be the last part of my decision to take some money from others and go to your patreon . I've been thinking about it for a while , and its now time. Incidentally, there was one sailor who sealed up that manifold and kept going. I had one welded once, for a jeep. On the jeep it lasted a long time. That said, if you can get any particular part for that engine based on need, that will be the one. They go out all the time. Tish, can you flag this for her and I'll let Barry know, he's fixing up and I think may be in your neighborhood soon. One of the most creative people I know plus he's in parts paradise !

In case anyone cares. Busted bit is an exhaust elbow, easy enoughff to fabricate. A exhaust manifold is usually the part where the various cylinder exhaust ports are joined together ( think many folds) and they are difficult to fabricate. If you have a 1 lunger it's still called a manifold but it's really just the exhaust elbow.

When row-towing, a piece of heavy chain or even the anchor hanging down and the towing line to the anchor makes for a far smoother tow. The dinghy does not jerk. Weight of the chain dampens.

A trick while towing is to take a full size used car tire as a shock absorber between the two boats run one line through the tire and attach it back to the towing boat then run one line through the tire and back to the towed boat be mindful not to run one line through the other line and just the tire don’t worry about the tire sinking the tension between the two boats will manage the tire.

Exhaust elbows are a consumable that needs replacing at the interval recommended by the OEM. The devil is they look OK from the outside but can be close to failure as they degrade from the inside. Running "Get You Home" repairs can be carried out with Fibreglass tape, High temp RTV /silicone , rubber radiator hose and jubilee clamps. (plus some creativity)
