So this movie is adapted from Chazz Palminteri's (Sonny)one man show based on his life growing up in the Bronx. His real name is Cologero Lorenzo Palminteri. He was dead broke and trying to sell his script in Hollywood, but nobody would let him direct or star in it. Somehow Robert Deniro became aware of the script and said he would direct/ play Lorenzo the bus driver and Palminteri would play Sonny. Lilo Brancato (Teenage C) Was discovered by a casting agent on Jones Beach because of his resemblance and spot on Robert Deniro impression. It was his first acting gig. Francis Capra (9 year old C) He was discovered at 9 years old at a casting call by Deniro and Palminteri. He was born and raised in the Bronx and had the NY swag and accent they were looking for in a young actor. It was also his first acting gig.

At the beginning of the movie when the guys were jumping on each other's back let me explain I'm 51yrs. And we used to battle other neighborhoods or other streets, you make a team of 6 to 8 people. In the movie they were playing with the 1st guy in line holding up the building and his boys on the team hold each other's hips in a line. The other team one by one runs from a certain start point and jump on the opposing teams back and try to make the line of people collapse,we used to get the heaviest kids on the block to help us out. But we used to play by having the 1st person in line holding a tree or telephone pole and we used to call it Buck-Buck!!!

"Now yous can't leave." The line is delivered flat. Passionless. Calculating, but most of all 'matter of fact'. The undertones of consequences so subtle, yet hang so ominously. Not only a classic movie line, but one of the best deliveries of a line on film in my humble opinion. I like to imagine some sort of alternate history where Cornwallis, upon realizing his forces are trapped at Yorktown in 1781 by the French Fleet by sea, and the combined forces of the French troops and Continental soldiers by land, his heart sinks and his face drops as Washington intones that same phrase: "Now yous can't leave."

some non blacks have a real dissonance when it comes to black people, like how he could be in love or lust with jane but in the same breath call her brother a n!gger. another reason why it's so nonsensical when people present their black partners as a shield to racism claims, like you can't be racist and engage with a black person sexually. it's sick.
@billhicks64493 жыл бұрын
That last part is more true than many people will understand. And absolutely loving someone of a different race or ethnicity does not shield you from prejudice, it just means you're able to treat that person as an individual instead of a stereotype. Sadly we all make assumptions about people based on things that don't matter at times. All we can do is try to treat people with kindness and respect, be mindful of our own thoughts and actions, and make amends when we fail; which we're all liable to do from time to time.
@LA_HA3 жыл бұрын
There's a big denial that many people also have when it comes to human nature. It's more than just calling someone else a racial slur. It's all about how people say things they don't mean out of anger, pain, and resentment, and say and do whatever they think will most hurt the other person. It's basically emotional payback. That's why name-calling happens during fights; and people in swirling relationships are always told by their respective groups, "The second you guys argue, It (their racism) will come out." Because they know how emotions can be a horrible thing to deal with and count on it to try to discourage something that makes the naysayers nervous and mad. This is all grade school mentality. The reason people call other people color, economic, height, weight, sex, looks, etc-specific names is because it's clear that it's what hurts the other person the most. If you call a girl names based on her weight, it's the worst thing you can do because it hits a deep part of her that says she's different, doesn't belong, won't ever be popular with boys, and a whole slew of things that goes along with being bigger than other girls her age. Same if you call a boy poor, short, stupid, or ugly. Those things tap into something deep that makes them feel the absolute worst. Everyone knows that most minorities feel extreme angst, sadness, hurt, and self doubt when called certain names; just like their are names for women, men, rich, poor, the unattractive, and others. C didn't have anything against the Black kids riding through the neighborhood. But, even now (as I've been told), you can't go into certain neighborhoods because their are ethnic groups that claim it as theirs and don't like others going through. This also happened to C when he went into Jane's neighborhood. So, we see very clearly that this wasn't all one sided with the Italians acting one way and the Black guys being welcoming and friendly. It's a historical fact by now that ethnic neighborhoods in places like New York were very much no-go zones for outsiders

@@veronicajade20 [Edited] Or not. Stop simplifying relationships down to your own internalized racism against others, limited experiences/knowledge, or anger towards what you believe people are like due to a short couple hundred years of American history against the Entirety of Human history. We've seen actual love between black people and non-Black people (Including White people of every Nation) that existed more than millions of times before, for hundreds of thousands of years throughout the ages; all who manage to be decent human beings, period. Including during historical periods when it was difficult to love someone of different colors, cultures, religions, etc. without considering them their movable property. Your experiences and ideologies are just that - yours. Not everyone is poisoned by the same bitterness and self-set limitations all their lives. Just ask The Lovings, an appropriate name for a couple that changed American History in 1967. As for fetishizing, name-calling, and all the rest, that doesn't work just one way, from White to Black. It works just as well in the opposite direction. A miserable person with ulterior motives and narrow mindsets comes in All colors, religions, creeds, ages, and sexes. Bad is bad wherever it dwells. Chazz Palminteri's story about getting this one-man play he wrote and still does, then and now, made into a movie is truly inspiring too. He came here to LA with barely anything and long, long story short wound up in a room with the then head of Paramount to sell the rights for a million dollar check in the 80s. Then 2 million, as he politely declined, when he didn't have a car that wouldn't start. They literally sent a car last minute to pick him up for this meeting. He still walked from the meeting when they wouldn't let him play Sonny and as he was leaving, the head of Paramount told him he'd get $2 million for a script that had a 50/50 chance to even get made, and asked him what makes him believe this is a better deal. He replied: "Because I know it's that good". Then walked out of a meeting with the head of Paramount. As he was doing another run of the stage version of A Bronx Tale, De Niro randomly met him in his dressing room and made this happen. This movie is inspiring in different dimensions.

A Bronx Tale is a great story, I saw the Broadway musical too (in the musical they show one of Sonny’s “great ones” was C’s mother; think it adds a layer to whose side you’re on if you choose) - as for the movie the thing is it shows his father and Sonny were good men but neither was perfect. His father was slightly prejudiced but hardworking, Sonny didn’t have problems with different groups of people as long as they respected him, that comes from fear to him but it comes from love with Lorenzo. Still one of my favorites despite some of its flaws, I grew up on the Tremont side of the Bronx (where this is partially set - Webster) and I moved to another part of the city (Astoria) where a lot of the Italians went when they left the Bronx - that’s where this movie was actually filmed right on 30th Avenue in Astoria. My friends father was actually one of the bikers in the bar scene. That said I’ve dated my fair share of Italians and I’ll say half were actually prejudiced individuals who I had to break up with because one dropped the N word very casually and two others shared some ridiculous racist notions they believed so I never found Calogero’s outburst too unbelievable, Jane’s better than me because that would’ve been my end point but we know through the viewers eyes he’s not a bad kid or prejudiced he’d been around his toxic friends too long, that’s another moral of the story be careful who you surround yourself with and how you align with them.

I love how at the end customer father paid his respect towards sonny, I think sonny respected the father's perspective. They had a mutual respect for each other.,FYI the girl that played Jane was also inthe movie if you haven't seen "Belly "yet check itout.

The only Broadway show I've ever seen was Chaz Palmenteri doing a one man performance of A Bronx Tale. It was captivating.

Dude one of my favorite movies! Me and my dad watched this movie a lot when I was growing up! The Godfather series as well; minus the third part lol we don’t like to think it exists haha! 😄

People always mention Goodfellas, Casino and the Godfather trilogy (all of which are phenomenal and should be watched) as "mob" movies to watch but this one tends to be forgotten even though it's a fantastic movie and vastly underrated! Directed by De Niro, starring and story by Chazz Palminteri based on his autobiographical one-man show. It also has a fantastic soundtrack too.

It's funny that DeNiro's character would be against an interracial relationship when he's been married to a black female for years and has biracial kids in real life.

Girl I dated a few years ago, before I had my current car, it had the manual door locks with a switch; without even thinking of it, I instinctively walked around back after letting her in, she reached over fast and unlocked my side, you just feel this rush of joy.

The guy playing Sonny wrote and directed this based on his life, it was a play first. The kid is based on him. Also the guy who plays the kid as a teenager, actually went to prison for accessory to murder among other things

Aside from the advice Sonny gave him about following your heart in regards to love, my second favorite advice was about getting the guy out of his life for $20. That is so profound and reinforces the fact that what matters in life is not what happens to you, but how you respond to it. You could choose to remember to be angry about everything (which is exhausting), but you could also choose to change the way you think of the situation. Which one is healthier for you? Which one helps you to move forward in life? Great lesson. Always one of my fave movies.

Love the many life lesson’s in this movie 💜. Cee had to become his own person with making a decision to date a black girl. Chaz Robert Lillo All gravitated towards women of color in real life. This is based on Chaz’s real life experiences. RIP Chaz
