I don't know anything about brooms and I never gave it a great deal of thought until now, but one observation that has come through regardless, that husk broom that you are demoing, no other broom or other tool can improve upon it for demossing an asphalt roof. Roofs are touchy, it's important to keep them clean but stiff brooms knock all the pebbles off and age the roof prematurely. Those old fashioned husk rooms have just the exact amount of pressure to dislodge the Moss without too many pebbles. And when you get the release stubborn sections of moss in the slots, turning the broom 90° gives you a much stiffer narrow brush to dislodge that Moss. I'm guessing roof moss is a much bigger issue for those of us in the Pacific Northwest, but that has proven itself to be the go-to tool

My boss called that type of broom a "corn broom". HEY, grab that corn broom and sweep the sidewalk!
@billmccabe96012 жыл бұрын
Great episode as usual. Something to also note, sometimes I have seen that binding on the corn broom is nylon, so I carefully and tediously remove it. A good soak in very hot water, and I suspend it under slight weight...almost all the kinks go away, and I have several yards of nylon line for use.

That broom brought back memories. I learned Pride of ownership from my Grandma Karolak! Three times a day, she was outside, wearing a flowered housedress and a babushka, sweeping the dirt off the sidewalk! That broom was 25 years old and worn back almost to the strings! She kept the place immaculate! Those brooms were great for cleaning out the cracks in the sidewalk.

Talking about pickaxes, I have a book that about some pioneers/their descendants from my area, and one of the stories is that they had a pickaxe that they wore down to a stub, and because their were no stores around, they forge welded a new tip on it. It just goes to show you can fix anything, and you don’t always have to buy a brand new thing when one wears out.
@bigpete42272 жыл бұрын
I’m with you on the brooms scout. I can’t let even the cheap ones die. Mixing heads with different handles and brackets to hold them together to get a few more uses out of them. Don’t think I’ve ever bought one though, got my own version of the poor man’s flea market, skips always have broken brooms in them. Disposable jack saws too. Bought a sawset and regularly rescue them from skips, got 12 now and they’re all usable.

Back in the early 80’s, starting when I was 12, I worked at our family distribution company after school. We had a 100,00 sq ft warehouse and one of the many jobs my older brother and I had to do was sweep it, using push brooms. If my dad every came out and saw us standing around he would say “I want to see you on the south-end of a northbound broom.” I think of him saying that every time I pick up a broom. I always makes me smile.

I may live in a city but a pick and a pitch fork are yard work heroes not enough people realize. I have "hard pan" soil with a high clay content to it and a pick is essential if your digging holes without a fight.
@OldSneelock2 жыл бұрын
You hit three of my favorites today. Early on I was introduced to the pickaxe. Dad would get a job to install a yard light at least once per summer. Farmers seem to want a yard light set in where the old barn drive was. The drive was filled with rocks from the stone pile and packed solid with the iron wheeled equipment. The pickaxe was able to pry the rocks free. Have you ever heard of a thing called a dornic? It can be a rock small enough to throw, or a large piece of rock. When you have both versions in the ground they interlock and form a formidable mass. My job was to dig a trench wide enough for a direct burial cable to be set a minimum of 18" below the surface. To do that I had to either go around the big rocks tucking the wire between them or move the rocks. Inevitably the trench ended up two or more feet wide and more than 18 inches deep. The Nighswander weight training plan. Brooms were an everyday implement. Vacuums were expensive. Brooms were not. Beating throw rugs and sweeping up the floor was something I could do for Mom that was really appreciated. A good broom made all the difference. When I got into my first shop class in 7th grade Mr. Reeg was old school and taught us the proper use of every tool in the shop. Including the broom. The floor was clean!!! every day. I learned to call the broom you have a warehouse broom. I have one of them hanging in the shop. Nice for small shops. Padlocks have been a part of my work life since the 60's. I changed out every lock on every plant that I was facilitiesI manager. I put in a Master Key system so I only had to carry one key instead of the huge ring that I was given the first time I became a manager. Over the 40 years of management I gathered a bucket full of keys and padlocks. I wish I had brought it with me from the old house. When Hensley's went out of business Sharon Boley, the daughter of John Soncrant the owner, sold off all the equipment and storeroom stock in a big sale. Lydia and I were friends with Gabe and Sharon and Ryan went to school with their sons and daughter. Hensley's was the main store in Union City for quite a while. They sold everything. I bought as much as I could from the sale and among the gleanings was a hand drive key cutter. It is still in my store room and I should get it out again. Thanks for a evening of good memories John. 😁😎

I've always wondered about that. Almost everywhere in the world besides North America, one of the most common yard tools that everybody owns looks like a shovel with the head at 90° compared to a normal shovel, kind of like a very broad pick. I've never understood why we don't really have anything broader than the mattock, and even those are not terribly common. But the much lighter weight shovel/how used in most of the world is a fantastically useful tool. For really tough soil, it has the advantage of being able to use the length for a very powerfully leveraged swing compared to stepping on a shovel using your body weight, and then lifting the entire weight of the dirt and tossing it with a twisting motion; it could almost be designed to damage your back. But those lightweight shovel hoes are quite easy to work with all day long, they are enormously lighter. Do you have any idea why? Is our soil composition that different than elsewhere?
