@amagicalgirlknits4 жыл бұрын
Taylor Parry When garments are designed to be sold off the rack, the initial pattern is made in a middle size and then graded to cover different sizes. However, grading only works so far before it distorts the pattern and doesn’t work anymore. So if you want to make a style in say sizes 0-24w, you need at least 2 initial patterns, which in practice means that you are still manufacturing 2 different garments, one straight size and one plus. Anthropologie have some styles in both as does say modcloth and some “size inclusive” retailers, but if you look carefully at the details and proportions you’ll notice they are different designs with a very similar concept. Often one of them (usually the plus version lets be real) isn’t as attractive as the other, because the design wasn’t conceived for those proportions. I want many designs that I see in straight size too, but it actually does make sense to just design really great clothes for plus size separately from straight size.
@smhatcher4 жыл бұрын
The shape and curves of a plus-sized body differ from a so-called standard-sized body. Just making the same pattern larger is rarely successful. Women tend to put on weight in different places: boobs, butt, tummy, legs, arms... and it varies. As someone who sews, I learned early on in trying to adjust a pattern that wasn’t large enough that simply adding 2” or whatever to the pattern width didn’t work. But, that is what a lot of companies do when they try to offer the same product in sizes 0-24. The end result is it fits great on a size 10 but needs tailoring to have the same success on a 22. Even when I was a “standard size”, like Sierra I struggled with anything button front because of the boobs and button placement. Bottom line, as Tim Gunn has said, the fashion industry designs and styles for a size 2, while the average American woman is a 16-18 who wears a 38D or 38DD bra, and most designers don’t want to see their designs on a curvy, “average” figure.

Plus size originally was called women’s and it was for women with shape to them. Then it changed to plus sizes for overweight people because there was a need for that and it is more expensive to make. It’s not just standard sizes with hip and boob room. It’s room everywhere. As we have gotten heavier as a population things had to changed. It used to be juniors, ladies, and womens. Which is still how it is labeled in some stores but instead of women’s having a 0-24 it has 14-24 in most stores because it’s the new plus size

Sierra, I know you probably won’t see this comment but I’m so proud of you. I know you’ve been going through tough times. For awhile I had to avoid your channel because it made me upset- it felt like you were trying to shake off the “plus size” label and trying so hard to cling onto the idea that you were a true size 12 despite the fact that you were gaining weight. It felt tough to watch those videos because you truly are one of the only youtubers I relied on to feel comfortable being in a bigger size, but to watch you try to deny that label was hurtful. But I’m proud of you because despite all the tough times you’ve gone through recently I feel like you’re finally embracing the idea that you’re not a size 12 or 14, and you’re becoming more comfortable with just liking the fit of an item of clothing. I never unfollowed you but I think that after this video I can watch more of your content knowing that you’re being more authentic to your true self again. Keep not focusing too much on the number, because you’re beautiful regardless of if you’re a “true size 12” or not.

@slavmetal4 жыл бұрын
It's definitely worth it, I get a lot of my clothes tailored. I don't see the point in wearing ill-fitting clothing, and since I have wide hips and a small waist I don't have much of a choice, especially when it comes to pants. It's a great option for thrifting too. But I recommend it only for higher quality items or else it's a waste of money. Also, it depends on how much tailoring is needed -- standard alternations are usually fairly affordable, but anything more advanced than that might not be worth it, unless it's vintage couture or something.

@jewlzt73314 жыл бұрын
You misunderstand. The size is 32, not the actual measurement. The site says that this pant in a 32 is equivalent to a 14. It's also their largest size in standard. She CLEARLY stated she tried the largest in standard and the smallest in plus. It was the entire point of the video to show women built like her, you know in the middle sizes, that we can many times enjoy shopping in both areas!
@morganp23364 жыл бұрын
@@jewlzt7331 When jeans are sized by numbers that range from around 24 to 40+ or so, they are sized by waist measurement. While Anthropologie may have a general size chart, they carry independent brands that each have their own size charts to look at ("standardized sizing" is a myth, brands are under no obligation to match their sizing and grading to any other brand, as such there is no such thing as a "true size 14" or any other "true" size). Besides, the general Anthropologie size chart does say a 12/14 has a 31.5 to 33 inch waist, making the size 32 perfectly fit that size range.
@kiyo65824 жыл бұрын
@@morganp2336 If you actually measure the waist size on a pair of "size XY" jeans, you'll find that they're often 1-3 inches larger than the numbered size (even in men's jeans - Target is a big offender). So someone who is usually fits size 32 jeans may actually measure 33-35 inches at their waist. You can buy four size 32 jeans from four different brands and get different fits, just as you would with size 12/14s. Vanity sizing just creates headaches all around, and numbered sizing hasn't escaped it.
@babycakez80704 жыл бұрын
@@morganp2336 The real question is, why did this brand/designers think it was okay to skip out 33-37. Cos that a big jump from 32" to 38". We should be demanding more consistent sizing across all brands. Instead of call out others for not fitting in clothes size they say they are. The problem is, brands move sizing around to accommodate for the people they think will shop their product or ideal audience. Then on top of that they're allowed their margins for error. These methods have resulted in pleasing some customers and upsetting other.
@morganp23364 жыл бұрын
@@babycakez8070 Hi, I can answer this! It's the fact that the jeans are from two different brands. If a "straight size" brand only goes up to a 32" waist, that's on that brand. If another brand goes to a size 16 and up, that's that brand's choice. If they were from a single brand, it's highly unlikely the brand would skip so many sizes in the middle of its range. And I'm actually going to defend limited sizing, in some capacities. Making clothes in sizes much bigger or smaller than sample size is difficult, and costs a lot of money. To "grade" patterns (aka size them up and down) you can't just add an extra few inches to each dimension. You have to guess how the "average" body changes between each size, which is a lot of effort, and can have a lot of discrepencies between brands as there is no true average human, but pattern graders still have to try their best to make clothes fit a wide variety of sizes. I find a limited size range acceptable in independent brands, as they are working with much less money and much smaller profits. I am a size 12 to 14 in most brands, and am thus sized out of a lot of brands I adore! However, if a brand is large enough to be sold at Anthropologie, I'd expect they make enough money to have expansive size ranges, yet choose not to because they hate fat people. Also, while every brand is sized differently, it's pretty crazy to order something with a certain maximum waist indicated on a size chart under the assumption it runs larger. Even within "vanity sizing" (a myth as there is no standardized sizing between brands) size charts for a brand should pretty decently reflect the actual size of the clothes. That mean an abstract size like a 4 could mean anything, but the size chart will define it. A concrete size like a 32 should reflect a 32" inch waist, because it is literally sized by measurement. It could theoretically have any hip measurement or inseam, but if the waist isn't 32 or close to it, the brand is majorly at fault. Thank you for coming to my fashion student TED Talk lol

@@babycakez8070 Its literally to do with grading. It cost the company a ton of money to to offer a full range of sizes as each pattern that can only fit say 4 - 5 sizes properly. You have to make a whole new pattern every time you go up a size range or they don't fit nicely. You can't just grab a size 8 pattern and add on extra inches to get to plus size, the arms would be too long and the necklines too wide, and the whole outfit uuuugly. Same with petite sizing, they don't just chop off the legs and call it a day, everything has to be completely redesigned from scratch to get it to fit that market how they expect. Basically companies have to redesign from scratch every time the sizes go up 5 sizes and keep production lines separate, meaning more cost and tracking to manage it all. It sounds like they are trying to save a buck but its actually true that its easier and cheaper for companies to offer completely separate ranges for different sizes with gaps in the middle. They could fill in those gaps but the prices of clothes would skyrocket as the patterning and production costs can't be duplicated, they have to start again every group of sizes.

They will! The dress is definitely not shapeless. That's an A line silhouette which looks amazing on pretty much any body type as it tends to give an hourglass shape to most body types. If I tried on the dress and it fit like it did on you, I'd probably size up for the extra room in the chest, and because it's an a-line style, it would still be flattering, even if it was a little big elsewhere. I would love to see you have a dress haul, as I am a mid-size girl like you, and dresses tend to be my go-to, as I feel confident and beautiful in them, and I think you would be fun to see you try on styles you don't often wear. :)

@miatomasetti19184 жыл бұрын
32 is a US 14 and usually the largest size in most standard lines. Edited to add- citizens jeans runs small imo and if she wanted to really compare she probably should have went with a standard size jean in the same brand as the plus vs trying a different brand that is also sold there.
@annaraps4 жыл бұрын
i'm a size 10 and almost every size chart I have ever seen on websites put a size 10 as a 30. 32s are big on me and usually equate to a 14 or 16; just goes to show that sizes are not universal per body type and proportions. Also, she said that she falls right in between the two (plus and standard) and plus usually starts at 14/16 so the 16 was probably the smallest she could get in the plus size, and she wanted to compare the two departments.
