@alaspooryorick99462 жыл бұрын
@@MamlamboFossils I thought about it for another couple of minutes and realised that it will depend entirely on what the mineralisation is. Those are some spectacular vertebra you found! Can't imagine finding something like that on the beach! Much be a partial skeleton, no? And, yes, even though the biggest pieces can't be hauled off of the beach in one piece (not even with your cart), it might be still be worth trying to get it off in multiple pieces - that is, if you think the vertebrae will hold. Otherwise they'll be just lost to the sea, and that seems like a real shame... :( Also, this sodium hexaphosphate seems an interesting chemical. Does it only work on clay, or do you think it'll also manage to break up uncompacted clay-y sandstone? If got an Eocene deposit I normally get the fossils out of by breaking the soil up by hand, which occasionally risks fracturing the fossils within. Sodium hexaphosphate seems like a way less destructive approach that I might give a try once.
@MamlamboFossils4 жыл бұрын
I think it can be used to break up anything with a weak bond, like the siltstone. I haven't tried it on a sandstone yet, I see no reason it won't as it should just be the particle size that is different? If there were any diagnostic bones in that bunch of vertebraes, I would have tried to get them off the beach. Maybe like some skull elements :) I'm rather limited by space at my house so have to be choosy with what I keep. Let me know how that sandstone reacts to the Sodium HMP!
@alexandermelchers14974 жыл бұрын
Will do, though it may be a while before I get new stuff from that location, especially since access to the right layer is difficult right now. But I think it would make for an interesting experiment anyway ;)

if you ever visit the united states, oregon has some pretty fun sites! there's a beach called short sand beach where i've seen some potential fossils! from the entrance to the beach, a ways off to the right is a big ol' shale deposit :) the beach itself has cliffs on every side except for the ocean and further up the beach (nearer the cliffs) is a rock band which may have some fun things. i've seen several rocks with dark squiggly things embedded into it and i even found a little concretion with what appears to be a little sponge or other soft-bodied invertebrate in it!
