I can't imagine how heavy your pockets and bags are when you start heading home 😆 This looks so fun. I lived in London, UK for about a year in my youth, and used to walk 20 min to the Thames to look for broken bits of pottery and shells. Humans have been dumping their rubbish in the Thames for several thousand years, so interesting things always wash up on the sections that are sandy/muddy and not bricked over.

There's always beachcombing for things like sea glass, cool looking pebbles, bones and driftwood plus human debris that looks cool. My favourite from that last one has to be half a longboard that had been tumbled in the rocks and is now hanging on my wall like some hipster skater art when in reality it's just a piece of rubbish I found on a beach

Absolutely fascinating. I wish the technology was at a point where these stones could be scanned with a hand held scanner and then all the sediment could be removed with a laser type device that leave the fossil untouched. I do believe it will/should be taken to the next at least two levels. If they can do 3D printing they should be able to do particle separation. Perhaps a smart laser instead of a chisel.

It’s just frustrating to watch and wonder, with extreme neediness, to know what’s inside say, that ‘flat crab’ looking thing, and having to know that I’ll likely not get to find out. It’s torture!!! 😫😫😫 😖 Anyway, love the journey of your vids. I live in Florida where there are fossils Everywhere! Only, they are ‘all’ composed of different morphs of calcium. 😕 The sharks teeth and other good stuff aren’t as easy to find as it appears on some of the Florida fossil hunters’ channels. Therefore, I explore NZ vicariously through your work here. For that, I say thank you. ☮️

I hope to find a rock with a crab inside on my beach one day, I just don't know if I'm allowed to keep it or if it belongs to the Queen aka the Crown. I need to do some research. I went rockhounding for the first time after watching dozens of these type of videos. Found lots of pretty stones I don't know the name of yet quartz and granite, a peice of petrified wood ( which at first I didn't think I found a peice till I went through my finds again ) tons of limestone with crinoids, brachiopods fossils. Some unakite. I went a little crazy and might have broke the rule of over hounding but I never go maybe once a year and looked through my haul several times picked out my faves and I will bring the rest back

I think it could be interesting to make a thin slice out of the unshaped piece of bone - paleohistology is a thing and seeing the remnants of some million year old bone cells may be cool. The procedure goes like this: Encase the chunk or part of it in resin, get a thin slice, bond it to a piece glass and then polish it down to ~100 um or so.
