x-trail... really, really a good buy for beginners. Perfect for using as a daily driver too. I believe this is one of the most practical and useful series you've produced, audience-wise. Its not a dream machine build, its something everyone can do. Some can even start working on the vehicle they already have.

YES! Cheap for the begginer overlander who doesn't want to dump a truckload of money on a rig! THIS RIGHT HERE is what helps people get into overlanding and keeps them enjoying it. It's not about the gear, it's about the trip, the places and how you enjoy them. And they can always move on to invest some more on a better rig/gear.

There's a work table in that storage system if you were to cut the drawer down 20mm shorter of the top and put a piece of ply on top half the length of the drawer with sides that just over hang the sides of the drawer you can pull the drawer out with a top/work table on it then slide the top back in if needing access to drawer ,works a treat and gives you a coffee prep space .

A good reminder for people that basic is good and still works, I see far to many people get caught in the trap of spending way to much money to create Instagram worthy interiors. I find the people that get the most use out of things, and have the most fun, have the most simple and cheap builds.

I'm over 6 feet tall and can sleep like a baby inside my 1st gen 5dr RAV4. I removed the rear seats, and I place an old IKEA futon-chair mattress flat across a couple of plastic storage bins, with the front passenger seat leaned forward. It takes < 5 min to set up; it's much easier than pitching a tent, I'm completely protected from weather, and I can use the heater, A/C, or radio as I please. The big downside is that I need to store a few items (like my cooler) outside the vehicle to make space while I'm sleeping, but this takes only minutes to rearrange. For a budget build and/or a small vehicle, I'd skip the fixed "storage rack" altogether, and just use plastic bins for more flexibility. Once a rack is installed, there's no way to temporarily recover the space for utility purposes.

Hello, here are a few tips for Kate: -coffee machine: Staresso hiking coffee machine - PeruSian rug: take a Rellow one, they’re the best color. Regarding the fridge, I’m surprised Andrew is stirring you towards all this gear. If it’s for a ‘backpacker/weekend/short trips’ budget overlander thing, you don’t need it? Chances are you’ll always stay close to shops and not spend more than 5 days away from one so a simple coolbox or electric one that runs during the day will be sufficient. Andrew, remember what you said in one of your videos: always ask the bikers for advice as they don’t have any space. I’ve been around the world with my motorcycle including Australia with 80L of volume/space and had all tent/camping/cooking /coffee machine gear, plus tools/spare parts, electronics, clothes... the whole lot! It’s good to see you guys going in Andrew’s steps but remember : in the 70s in Africa, all he had was a simple box at the back and Gwynn at the front. And he survived ! Happy travels!

It's fine to make your own drawer systems, but the moment you're thinking about bolting a fridge on top of it you'll need to do more than just screw the ply lid on top of the box because in case of an accident or rollover it could very well tear the lid right off the box. Aluminum angle around the edges screwed through the top and sides and reinforcement plates through where the fridge is bolted is the go.

When we arrived in Australia ten years ago, we got this exact car. We took our first off road (well, rough gravel roads) trips with it and loved the heck out of it. Great choice for those on a budget! So it only gets you to 95% of the stunningly beautiful places, I'll take that.

X trail is good, but I will think you overlooked the absolute best one...Suzuki Grand Vitara 2.4. Its permanent 4wd, and has a low range transfer case. I also believe-to go overlanding on a low budget with a fridge and drawers with chairs etc...RV3 OZ tent that they can store on normal roof bars is the answer. An suv is not ideal to sleep in for two

Double the Cost to buy a Suzuki with Same Kilometres, they will probably do the complete Build for the cost of buy the Suzuki Standard also the X Trail is slight wider and has rpughly an extra 130kgs Pay Load, 550kgs to the Zooks 420 odd, they wont be planning on doing 4wding, just normally Touring most likely and 4H is all thats needed, 4low is for proper 4wding, and they are doing it on a Budget, roof top tent even a Kings will cost a good $800. Ill bet they will do the complete build for less then a Suzukis $14000 price tag on Car sales

@@J-P88 so we recently just sold our 2004 grand vitara v6 with 97kms full and great service history for $4500 and honestly for a budget build they are perfect. we upgraded for just an off road not a daily. to a Tj wrangler :) with a roof top tent. winch etc for under $10.000

That's why I purchased my 80 series. Completely stock standard, 95 gxl, 1hdft engine. One owner, a retired pilot who ran his own small airline and maintained his vehicle like his aeroplanes. Every receipt since the bill of sale kept in a folder. 180,000km on the odometer. A bit of a unicorn. I paid $20,000 (Australia) in 2016. Love the work Andrew. I've passed this on to a young backpacker lady I towed (I'm a tow truck driver) who was planning on an Xtrail for touring Australia.

Good stuff. I'm someone lucky enough to have a late-1990s GWagen after selling my Defender 110, but everything I do to my vehicles is done on a budget. I always try to keep it simple, cheap, and low weight. No matter what kind of vehicle you have, this is the way to go.

We've just got a 4x4 1998 Nissan Pathfinder. We live close to a volcano so testing its capabilities will be a great adventure. Also, on the note of the Nissan X-trail, we also had one 17 years ago brand new, 2WD. Not bad, but very bumpy.

Awesome video Sir!! I’ve been building my 1992 Landcruiser Fj80/3FE/Auto for a couple of years now. We used to have a 2007 Nissan Xterra 4wd, for about 5 years as a daily driver and on weekends as a light overlander. It was a great vehicle, few issues but nothing major or expensive. When we sold it, it had 208,000miles and was still going strong!

Got to say that this was one of the more engrossing videos on a build that I have watched. Watching people spend a motza or spruik high cost supplied gear to drag their worldly belongings around with them was starting to wear very thin. This is actually what getting out and about should be imo. I have a much newer and larger vehicle but I am keeping it as simple as possible and looking at gear that people like backpackers/bushcrafters use to keep weight and bulk down. Well done guys and thanks for the video, I enjoyed it.

I like this video. Getting back to the roots of overlanding and off roading. Example; what a guy or gal can afford for some weekend trips or a vehicle for initial learning the fieldcraft/tradecraft. Not many if any start with a tricked out landcruiser.

I have the same xtrail t30. I live in Sydney. Went to uluru , then uluru to warracurna roadhouse in WA via the great central road and come back, 3 weeks ago went to birdsville to see the big red, went to fraser island twice with the same vehicle as well as dairy driving. Its a very capable suv. Lone my car . Thanks Andrew
