Nice try Mike, we all know it's because there are no more ideas. Literally every idea has been thought of and you don't want us to know that. You can't hide it from us.

I've been following this channel almost from the beginning - and I don't want to be a hipster, but I really do remember when this was small. I'm glad what this channel has grown into. There isn't any other channel whose updates I follow with such enthusiasm, and I'm not even exaggerating. I'm sad that Idea Channel is ending, but at the same time, when I look back at how you, both this channel and you Mike, has evolved throughout the years, and how much you taught to me, I feel awe in the purest sense. I give all my respect to you, and I will support whatever you choose to do from now on!

I don't want to be reductive, but man, your very long answer to the question of why this is ending basically amounts to, "I'm tired of this and I want to do something else now." Which, by the way, is perfectly fine.

Exactly. I mean, if he wasn't tired of the format he would keep doing it. But he's. And this it's totally fine.
@forrestl55977 жыл бұрын
was needlessly challenging to read this between the lines. maybe he thinks there are some 8 year olds whose minds are melting because the channel is ending.
@MahlenMorris7 жыл бұрын
I think "tired of this" is too narrow an interpretation. Creative people do not set out to do the same thing over and over again until death. Musicians change styles and formats and bands and collaborators. Painters decide to try sculpture, or video art. Actors walk away from onstage roles even though the play is still selling out the house every night. There are no awards for consistency in art; no gold watch for playing the same hits every night for 40 years. This is an ongoing challenge for online video; the people who make it are creative people, and the KZbin audience largely demands (through its collective behavior) creators make new stuff on a consistent schedule. So we get to expect it, and then treat it as a bug or a tragedy when it doesn't happen. Instead, I think, we should treat any channel as a long performance piece, with a beginning, a life span, and an end. Endings don't have to come because the people are "tired of it"; some things are trilogies, and should stop at three books. (That said, Mike, if you do happen to make more Reasonably Sound episodes, I'll be thrilled :)
@owlperson50757 жыл бұрын
I think what he really meant was his certain approach/perspective to most of the ideas is getting stale, and this is somewhat evident in some of the videos.
@Vocalinds7 жыл бұрын
Hmm, I interpreted it more as "my goals can be met more satisfactorily in new ways." Which does not mean one is tired of the old way, only that new ways of doing things might work better.

Pixo da I know these well, and I would add Seeker Daily, although its dead now. Yeah, these channels do cool videos on diverse topics, but nothing does what Idea Channel does, that is, combining seemingly unrelated things, through which we can reflect on pop culture and society. Also, Mike is very, very knowledgeable, he knows a lot. He's not just a pub philosopher, because he has deep insights, has sources, does a lot of research. Also, I don't know any other channel which does comment responses, and I think that's also a big appeal to this channel, as it brings the audience to a more personal level

hearing the ideas you wont be making episodes about made me sadder about the channel ending, i really want to see that different kinds of intelligent episode
@BladedEdge1237 жыл бұрын
In a very un-sourced, short as I can answer. IQ is but one way to ascribe intelligence. There are all kinds of/ways to be intelligence. You could be muscial intelligent, or mechanically. Emotionally, Abstractly, Mathmatically, Pattern wise..etc etc. In general people would say "You gotta be more intelligent to be a rocket scientist then a car mechanic or a song writer/singer" When really, its just different kinds of intelligence. Everyone is more intelligent then the average person..in some manner. We just ascribe specific kinds of intellect to being "smart" ,typically those which are tested and used to learn when we are growing up. I.e. Memorization and Pattern recognition is way more important then emotional or musical intelligence. Heck, even people who are praised for being physically gifted at something, just another kind of intelligence, tend to be considered jocks, not nerds. Strong, not smart, etc. And um, be proud of who you are, and revel in you own strengths tends to be the positive message to take away from that line of thought.

I discovered your channel from your episode about Too Many Cooks of all things. What sold me on Idea Channel though was the Korrasami episode. It is so rare on KZbin, in fact the whole internet, to find someone who's not judgmental about shippers. But I have watched just about all the videos, even some stuff about media I'm not interested in. I just love your ideas, analysis, and the over-the-shoulder visuals. In the past two years you made a risky move by going into more serious territory about real world issues, and I'm glad you did that. It was kind of jarring at first, but things needed to be said. (And I'm glad it's not the negative reactions some people had to those episodes that led you to want to end Idea Channel.) I look forward to your future projects. I have been watching you on Crash Course Mythology and am enjoying it immensely. Good luck. :')

I can't help but reject the idea that a new host couldn't keep Idea Channel Idea Channel. There are certain principles that Idea Channel rests upon. Just a few: * All people, regardless of their eccentricities are important * Culture is deserving of critique, no matter how niche * Thought is valuable in and of itself, even if it does not result in discernable action * Nerdery is the coolest There are many others, but they are not so many and they are not so difficult that someone who believes them cannot take up the torch. Of course it would be a bit different and I think for most IC fans, that is preferable than losing this special place. I hope that PBSDS considers finding someone to be the next host and gives them time to find their groove. This is a valuable property for PBSDS, and it's valuable for us.

Dude, that advice from your professor is like a gut punch. I feel like I can relate to this because I have had a bit of a rough time, probably not the roughest of times, but some rough times with schooling. Late 2009, I'm in 10th Grade, and my small school announces that it could be closing if money cannot be raised, spring 2010, it closes and my dad is out of a job. He gets one at a new public high school and I have to start at a public school for the first time ever the next year, I'm still pretty smart, but I never felt like I belonged until the end of the school year. My dad gets a new teaching job but tuition is too high so then I have to move to another high school because that's the one I'm zoned for and I have to do it all over again. I graduate in 2012 with none of my friends, I haven't even applied for college. That summer, two weeks before classes start, I apply to a community college and get started and it's the best two years, but then I have to go to university. The university rejected my art portfolio twice, I didn't even try for a third time, I just took the intensive class the summer of 2015. I get to doing really well, I feel like I am at the top of my game, then I swear to you, the requirements changed or something because then I was not going to be able to graduate even a semester late, but a whole year, and I blame that portfolio holdup, and because of that this last year, I didn't feel like things were going all too great. I graduated this past Spring, I had fun in my classes, but now that it's over, I'm at the bottom again. All I have ever known is school and now it's over. To make things worse, I still don't even have a physical diploma! The system feels rigged when it comes to that. It's also partly my fault, I should be trying to apply to jobs.

Though I won't say "single-handedly", Idea Channel is definitely the first KZbin channel that got me into, well, KZbin. I linked here from a random article on ScreenRant so many years ago and never left. It taught me, aside from all the stuff it taught, how to watch and engage with KZbin and the potential power of channels. Because of Idea Channel, I also found Extra Credits, Philosophy Girl, Movies with Mikey, Lessons from the Screenplay, Game/Film Theorists, the McElroys, Every Frame A Painting, and so many more. Each linking me deeper and deeper into KZbin content (G'yar?). But Idea Channel was the first, and for that alone, I will forever be grateful. (As well as all the non-KZbin stuff, like Ms Marvel, Welcome to Nightvale, Steven Universe, Rick & Morty, and so forth; not to mention all the other suggestions I am still getting to. Homestuck, I'm looking at you...) Does anyone know a word that describes one as having a feeling of immense sadness while simultaneously feeling pure joy for a choice made by another? I think I feel that. And a half dozen other things. I'm going to miss you Idea Channel, and all your ideas. Thanks for five great years :-}

I know that not everyone gets their big break immediately, but it's super reassuring to hear it ring true for someone else that it didn't happen immediately, it's normal, and the struggle doesn't always last forever.

I wanted to write a novel, but I guess I'll simply say I'm very grateful that this channel ever existed, I'll be sure to follow your next adventures and if I ever get the occasion, buy you a nice drink.

Discuss media man, that's what I'm going to miss most about this channel. Please do not leave!

Wow, this answer was MUCH clearer than the one from the "Idea Channel is Ending" video. Artistic growth is something most people will probabbly understand. Especially the Idea Channel community.

Whats the name and author of the book again? I didn't understand :( (11:37)

I felt like there was a lot of encouragement to make something new that's like Idea Channel. Which is a very good thing to remember with Idea Channel ending.

I like how you give us an answer without answering the question. Here's an idea: You've been doing this for a long time You want to move in a different direction You want to try something new You believe it's time to take a break, then move on.

Vigor 3GreenGreenGreen (6) Creature - Elemental Incarnation (6/6) Trample If damage would be dealt to a creature you control other than Vigor, prevent that damage. Put a +1/+1 counter on that creature for each 1 damage prevented this way. When Vigor is put into a graveyard from anywhere, shuffle it into its owner's library.

You should totally archive this entire channel under the Internet Archive. It would be incredible to take such great, recent content and openly host it there.

Mike! I love to share Idea Channel because I know it is quality stuff. Definitely going to miss you popping up in my feed every week or so. Keep up the pursuit of knowledge, truth, and all things IDEA. Please make a TUMBLR or Twitter dedicated to the fine GIF curation of you and the crew so we can have our fix. Much love Mike.

If a hotdog is not s sandwich, how is spotify a mixtape?
@saizai7 жыл бұрын
vitamindubya FWIW I'd bet that the hotdog people don't want it to be a sandwich because of regulations or taxes, not actual deontological beliefs about the nature of sandwiches.

I know many of us will miss our semi-regular Mike Rugnetta fix (and yes I know about Reasonably Sound and Crash Course). Thank you Mike, the PBS Idea Channel Crew, the Patreons and everyone else (myself included as a content absorber) for helping to make this show what it is.

I will miss idea channel so much. You always approach topics from an unconventional perspective that I greatly value. That being said, I can't wait to see your new project and you have all of my love and support!

This Exists--which has not been published as regularly as Idea Channel, but does have a back catalog--is a kindred memepool-like spirit.

As soon as you brought up a potential "comfort movie" I quickly thought to myself. "Huh... I have a hard time picking a favorite. But a comfort movie? Probably Three Amigos." Then you gave your answer. Amazing. Thanks for all this, look forward to your next adventure.
