It's gif as in gin or general, (sounding like jif) because gif as in ghiff sounds stupid. And back in the late 80s early 80s everyone online knew this because of taglines like "choosy devs choose gif" (as in jif) The "correct soundness" of jif is way higher than ghiff. Same reason you say bee emm pee for .bmp files, not "behmp", jaypeg for .jpg not jaypedge, and pee enn gee for .png files. Nobody says ping files. If you say ghiff not jif you basically are someone who says ping files and you should question what you are doing with your life.
