Looks cool. I can see a lot of people getting this and using it. For a machete, it’s compact. I see it easily thrown into a bag where a full sized machete might get left behind. The pinching aspect isn’t great. But you showed that you could alleviate that by wearing gloves. Though pinching is why I stopped using Gerber multi tools with the slide out jaws like the Gerber 600. It was nice being able to engage the pliers with a flick of the wrist. But if I clamped down on thin material the handles pinched my palm. I go with a Leatherman or a SwissTool now.

No point in making a fixed-blade version of this. It's only advantage over literally anything else out there is its folding ability, to get down to a very compact size; with a very secure locking mechanism. Making it into a fixed-blade, even a very small hatchet will outperform it for significantly less money.

Definitely a unique blade even though the "butterfly" knife has been around for years. I like the safety lock to fully open it, Gerber probably added that for legal reasons and so people don't try flipping the thing open and closed like they're Bruce Lee. Pretty cool all in all. It would be awesome if they just made it into a standard fixed blade like you said.

Excellent review Aaron. Enjoyed it a lot. I would take one. Don't think I would take it over some other fixed blades I have if I was forced to only have a couple blades. I do think it's cool though. If you think about all the parts, probably around 40 to 50 parts it's not that bad a price. I've been a machinist. For them to make that many parts in America, that price is very reasonable to me from a parts to cost perspective. Now will it replace another $140 fixed blades i have....well?

I’m kind of with you. I’m glad someone is out there trying innovative ways to make a machete more compact. This would allow you to carry a machete in a fanny pack on a day hike. That is pretty cool! I care about the bulk of gear, so from that angle this does intrigue me. But I’m not sure I need one, or that most anyone else needs one. Like you said, it doesn’t replace the other tools I already have, and if I’m already doing fine with the tools I have, then I probably don’t need to carry an extra one. And, while the R&D may justify the price tag, I don’t think my usage would justify paying that price. So I kind of land on the fence.

Came to comments to say the same thing. This looks like an excellent river knife, especially for in the city; I fly fish for trout and salmon often and getting through the rivers/creeks is tough without a large knife. With waders on, if you plan on going waist deep, there's just nowhere to keep a fixed blade machete on your person without it constantly taking a dunk. Also, I often have to trek through parks during these fishing trips and don't really want to be around kids and parents with an easily spotted machete hanging off my leg.

The blade looks so similar to the blade of my Schrade SCHF9; I call it my Chef Nine. I use it primarily for light chopping and wood processing. If I had to choose between the Gerber machete and my Ontario SP58, I'd go with the Ontario machete everytime. The Gerber is a pretty cool concept but it's too many steps to deploy it. With the Ontario it requires one quick unsnap of a metal button on the leather sheath, rock the Sp58 handle forward and draw it from the sheath; it's ready for use. Like you, I absolutely love my two Gerber Strongarms, coyote and black, and they are my go-to blades of choice. BTW, I love LAPG products. My favorites are the Operator Pants ($30/pair) and the LAPG Bail Out Bag, great organizational bag I take overland camping. Mine was on sale for $29.

I really don't like straight out of the box reviews; give the product long term use under various conditions to see how it holds up after after years of use/abuse then that is the proof whether it is worth the money or not. For the price it should have been at least 440c , s30v, maybe even 57 rockwell d2

Got it. Love it. Wanted something portable; this fits the bill.

@gideonstactical A bit off topic but I just discovered your channel and wondered if you might assist me on my mission to find an ideal bushcraft/camp knife since you have solid experience with so many brands/models of fixed blades. I’m looking for something that is medium sized (sub 5” blade roughly) and practical for camp activities more so than “survival”. I have a couple machetes and a bk7 already so I don’t really need a chopping oriented knife. I want something that can baton if needed, but more oriented towards cook prep, some general carving with finer detail capability, harvesting and prepping for bow drill tasks, striking ferro rods, and perhaps even reasonable for frontcountry utility carry and usage. Sheath is not top priority since I can buy or make aftermarket. I think 1095 steel is practical and cost effective and I don’t want it unnecessarily thick so that I can carve decently. So far I’m leaning towards the TOPS Baja 4.5 (standard or reserve edition possibly) or maybe the BOB field craft. Also open to an Esee or really any brand/model that you might favor. Thanks in advance for your time, consideration, and insight if you get around to replying. I’ll be sure to subscribe if ya do ;)

I want it! It's a cool concept and it actually works apparently. But what I like most is the uniqueness, the strange idea. It's going to be in the collection, but I don't think I'll use it instead of the strongarm or the Buck I'm normally using. Therefore I don't have to have it now, but eventually. Thanks for the review

Can't tell if this is quick enough for big light thornbush that hides footsteps and obscures slick mushroom logs in creeks. It looks clumsy compared to a small trail tramontina or Imacasa blades or others that I have by the armload. I would typically carry a machete on easy ground if I could hide it from prying eyes here in the brambled hills of the driftless area. Off trail I walk with a new "sharp snick-snick" Coldsteel Raja 2 that works surprisingly well for the curved red stemed stickerbush but it is a "small" blade that takes quite a bit of time to trim up the bunch bush stickerbush so I can step and walk safely (I'm 73...eh). I use a serrated 6 inch Cold Steel holdout blade for when I get the really light stuff. The handle is long enough to give me a quick 12 inch swipe with a light kukri shaped blade. The blades I hope to swing should be light enough to "flick" and long enough to keep me away from the stickerbush and the stupid ticks. No...the Silky Yoki 270 is too heavy for snicking off stickerbush but it is a decent size. It just does not catch that well. Maybe I need to turn it into a razerblade. I'm tempted to go for a cheap old butcherknife with or without serrated blades but they don't really fold or lend themselves to easy walking and off trail work when you want to bend and pick. The Cold steel AUS 10A steel they use now sharpens really really well and holds its edge nicely. Gerber 420HC? not so sure. Probably OK steel for light slicing stuff. I have a hard time with 420 cheap but funky decorative blades. The steel is usually a bit thick and I have to take off a lot to get a thin edge. Anyway, Machetes are mostly for slicing trail stuff not chopping but all the reviews seem to think a machete is a hatchet. For example, the thick pocket chete of D2 steel by Jorg Sprave is too heavy and slow for the light stickers and he never demonstrated it for light stuff. Plus...I Can't really carry a curved grass machete or even a regular long machete over woody rocky steep hills with hands full and a stupid dog trying to play. I certainly do not relish carrying something open as I walk slick creeks. Mostly I fold everything and walk with it in a pocket. I use a folding silky hand saw for 2-3 inch stuff that I can't easily walk around. I am mostly worried about ticks. Anyway...Gerber blades never really seemed light enough and I simply can't tell from the reviews how good they really are for off trail snicking of light thornbush. In desperation I ordered a few Lenard's christmas tree trimming blades. They might hide in a piece of PVC pipe OK and are not all pointy for safety sake. I once had a short machete with a latin leather sheath that was made of spring steel. Now that was decent...but still a bit long for picking and steping. I could tell it was good steel because it would "ring" when I snicked off light stuff as I walked among the rocks. does the Gerber "ring"?

come on...this folding gerber looks great for dog walk, stoop and pick or off trail scrambling up a steep slope but the thing looks thick and slow. Grr....I bet it's not much better than the Raja 2...if any.
