"Hey, you're not allowed to have that sword!" "It's a messer." A proud German tradition.
@theamericancristero73903 жыл бұрын
That's a complete myth. Read "the martial ethic in early modern Germany" it begins in the 15th century. Messers being "technically not swords" had to do with cutlery guilds making swords without running afoul of swordsmithing guilds. Nobody would look at a falchion with a knife hilt and actually think "oh, you're right, that's not a sword." This would be like if the law said "you can't carry a saber when riding your horse" and then telling the English constable "as this backsword has a straight blade, it is not a saber" or telling the American constable "this scimitar doesnt have a saber hilt, therefore it isn't really a saber."

I'd imagine something like this would be a big seller for campers and hunters regardless of country. I know from experience, when you're camping or backpacking, anything that lets you reduce the space something takes up is a huge benefit, even if the weight is still comparable. Carrying a 1 pound weight that fits neatly into a side pouch is a lot easier than carrying the same weight that has to hang off the side of your pack. Not to mention it would free up space for other equipment. For that matter, the military would likely be interested in something similar as well, they're all about fitting the most useful tools into as small a space as possible. If the performance is at least as good as the average fixed blade machete, and it's not unduly prone to failure, I'd be willing to bed you could easily get government contracts to supply versions for the military as well as selling civilian versions.
@TheDeinonychus3 жыл бұрын
Actually, I wonder if you could develop a version that includes some extra tools. Sort of like a 'Swiss Army Machete'. You could probably integrate a saw blade into the folding blade guard. Add a smaller folding knife blade, as well as a file and nail puller, and you'd basically have a complete camping multi-tool. All you'd be missing would be a shovel XD
@eddieguyvh47653 жыл бұрын
Actually, a folding knife of this sort would probably be heavier than a fixed blade equivalent, because you'd have to add liners, the locking mechanism, and overall make it buffier to ensure its strength. No folder beats a fixed blade when you're talking weight (at equal blade length and thickness, of course), and a fixed blade will always be stronger and less expensive to make ;)
@BobT363 жыл бұрын

I had this exact idea a year or two ago! I posed the question of it to one of the knife-maker channels thought I didn't get a very satisfactory response. I'm so excited to see someone is finally doing this! HOWEVER, in my idea, the blade didn't have the cover in the folded position. My idea was that while it was folded, it would function like a fixed-blade knife with a 5(ish) inch blade. It would have a holster to hold it in that configuration as well. Then when you unfolded it, it would become a 10-12 inch blade (depending on the size of the handle).

Down at the BKA (the german authority that decides whether or not a weapon is legal) they don't have a file, they have an entire room dedicated to Joerg Sprave. There are rumors that every time Joerg has an idea, an officer goes into early retirement because of burnout.
@daviderosini95563 жыл бұрын
If one of the main uses of this knife is self-defense, I think that it must be capable of being deployed and used as a weapon as fast as possible. Carrying the knife in an open position, as shown in the video, would certainly be the most effective solution, speed-wise, but anybody could clearly see it’s a knife and that’s not always ideal. Let’s suppose I want to carry it concealed, perhaps attached to my trousers via a clip. If I have to defend myself using the knife, I would have to open it as fast as possible. Doing so, the “handle extension” must be left in an open position, as it’s faster than closing it. This can lead to serious issues in a hypothetical fight as, if the extension close itself, there’s a high risk I would injure my hand. In order to achieve a good opening speed while also having a decent degree of safety, I believe that mechanically connecting the blade to the handle extension would be a better solution. One of the possible ways to do this would be using a four-linkage system with parallel axes, which would be both simple and effective. I made a sketch to demonstrate how this system would work and I loaded it on Bitly (if you want to take a look, the name of the file is “JoergKnife”). Please, like my comment so Joerg can see it. Thanks.

Perhaps consider a rotating band like an opinel lock? I suppose you could also use rubber or canvas as the handle extension to fold over the folded blade tip then wrap it around the handle when it is open. Cool idea. There are some folding Japanese pruning saws with strong lever locks you could look at. Also, please use a budget steel like a garden machete. Doesn't stay sharp forever, but it's easy to restore. Maybe even 440c if you're feeling daring.

You are a very smart man, marbles had back in the day a similar design called the safety knife , with the swing guard also made the safety axe

A past acquaintance, not knowing my origins, once stated "Pass any law you like, but you'll never totally separate a German from his weaponry. He WILL find a way."

Wow Joerg, really cool EDC Zombie Protection. Actually it would offer adequate survival cutting chores.

Like a WWII folding machete. Camillus, Cattaraugus, and a few others made them.

Always liked your enthusiasm! That s super that you go with it to Boker themselves! I thought maybe extending the handle so it is as long as the blade could further improve the knifes chopping ability and also compensate for its relatively low weight (well that depends on how thick will it be). You know...lever effect. Wish you good luck bringing this project to life!
