In this video, we will discuss some of the points to look out for when buying an older X220 Thinkpad. Most of these principles apply to other computers in the Thinkpad family as well. Expect to see more videos in this series.
If you have any questions about the X220 series, please ask them in the comments below. This machine will end up being a Linux machine.
I will have a separate video shortly showing how to test X220 batteries using Linux.
As of the publishing of this video, a decent asking price for these machines is $250-$350 CAD depending on condition and what is included.

I use an x220 with an SSD as a server for my home network, it runs Ubuntu with virtual machines, domoticz, and a small Minecraft server for my son. It has build-in UPS because of the battery and it runs with very little power consumption. All I have changed is the SSD and used 1 USB port to power a large silent fan that sits underneath the slightly raised x220 to cool it from the bottom the give the laptops own fans a little less work. It's a great little low powered server with its mobile i7 CPU.

You are correct! the msata slot is only Sata II and does throttle the drive, but it is still faster than mechanical. The two bays offer many options. What I have enjoyed with another X220 build is using the 2.5-inch bay as a swap slot; so I can use it as a storage drive slot or I can swap it out for a drive that I have a Windows 7 install on if I need it. This trade off in boot speed makes up for it in versatility. Ultimately if speed the chief goal, you are right in your approach. The beauty of the X220 is we have the options for both. Only a handful of machines have both types of drives like the the XPS15 with the smaller battery but none have made them as accessible. Thanks for the comment!

got one just like it for $90 at a hamfest. I'm sure mine is a TN panel, but it seems bright enough. The battery slide locks were broken and I had to tape the battery in place. I new battery half fixed this, on one side the lock was broken in the battery, on the other side it was the slide in the computer that was borked. PC card door flap was missing, and USB jack on right side is wonky (poor connection). Came with 8GB ram and a 160gb hd, I replaced the hd with a 250gb SSD, and added a 64gb micro sata SD boot disk. MB on mine is an I5, but the mobile I5 is a dual core with hyper threading, so Linux reports this as a 4 core (4 thread anyway). Not bad.

The plastic brim at the end of the X220 lid breaks easily. In my experience this is a really easy to take apart laptop and you can get parts units for around $40. The tn panels are kinda terrible, so I would try to find one with an IPS display. I have a 6 cell and 9 cell 29 and they seem to be holding up fine, but I didn't know about the 44 plus series. Also there is a x220i which was a lower end, but identical model with an i3. There is also a whitelist on the X220 which prevents you from using certain aftermarket wifi cards, which can be an issue using a wwan card or even a better wifi card. This can be gotten around with fairly easily with a modified lenovo bios, though or coreboot, but that installation is a bit more challenging. Seriously though finding one with an ips is worth it, also all the panels are 1366x768 which isn't too bad, but can be a tad annoying and in my opinion feels cramped under windows. Also nice video though :D, sorry wall of text got distracted. Was about to plug in a gobi 2000 wwan into mine, but they shipped it to the wrong location :c
@LaptopRetrospective
@LaptopRetrospective 6 жыл бұрын
Agreed that the TN panel isn't great, but as we both know, very easy to service and change that. I didn't discuss the i series because the i3 is a bit low spec even for a Linux build. You are also correct about the BIOS swap, which has actually been done on this unit; also stops the RAM from being throttled as well. I found the installation very simple and straight forward; perhaps I should do a video on that... Glad you enjoyed the video and I enjoy reading a good comment; wall of text or not!

By the way when the online store says original battery, does it means a battery which was recently manufactured or it was a used original battery? I don't trust most of the seller since most were scams I am using x200 and wanted an all day no plug machine if you know what i mean
@LaptopRetrospective
@LaptopRetrospective 6 жыл бұрын
You might be chasing a ghost if you want an X200 to have an all day battery. Buyer beware; check their return policy and run your own tests on the battery to ensure once you get it the capacity is correct. Original battery usually means the one that shipped with the unit so don't expect a "like new" experience. A 9-cell would be the bear minimum if you want all day use and even then it depends on what you are doing with your computer. Hope that helps.

Thanks for this video! Found someone selling this online i7 (but I'm still confirming this. Asking if its usb 3.0) and I plan to use it for google chrome, working with lots of tabs (for research), MS Office, and Evernote. Will it handle that? I plan to use it for school stuff on the go but my biggest concern is the weight because I have back problems. How much does it weigh and can you give me a visual for comparison (ex. weighs as heavy as a 12 pack of soda, etc.)? Will maybe ask follow up questions. Thank you again for this informative video!

Hey there, I'll answer as many questions as I can, some might require images so you can drop me an email or hit me up on Twitter. Running the programs you listed will be no sweat and the weight is quite manageable. I'd suggest to save a little money for a new 9 cell battery as they rarely come with healthy batteries and that 9 cell gives you lots of juice. Let me get back to you on the cans of soda.

I want a small laptop to take to work and cafes but I don't want to spend more than around $250 (which is dirt cheap: computer hardware is much more expensive in UK than in US), especially if I have to buy a new HDD or other hardware. I have to rely on Internet for buying anything else than white goods and this being an old laptop, I am of course forced to buy a second-hand machine. The two main places are Amazon and Ebay (uk). Laptops that are certified refurbished* in Amazon go over my budget, so... Any tips how to buy this stuff online, espeically when there is only one generic photo? * Certified refurbished doesn't mean anything to me: my tablet never worked despite it was sent to the factory in China, THREE times during warranty period.

+Claptrap Claptrap Biggest thing is not to buy from a seller that one has one photo or you request additional photos. If they refuse the request, then you have a good example of the quality of customer service you can expect. Most of the time they will ask you what photos you'd like and you can make a decision based on what you see. I list the major damage areas in the video that would be good to photograph and then a picture of the bios screen and booted into the OS. Ultimately buyer beware so be confident that the person on the other side is worth dealing with if things don't go your way. Hope that helps, if you have more questions, post away.

@LaptopRetrospective
@LaptopRetrospective 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Alto, So here is the situation; yes you can, but it really isn't worth your time. You can an external GPU adapted through the 1x PCIe lane in the Express card, but it's only Gen 2 meaning that most graphics cards will simply bottleneck and you can't get the performance you likely desire. You'd also need an external PSU and a few other components, so by the time you've spent all the money to put it together it's a bit of a loss. There are lots of projects online that can be found with a quick search but the bottlenecked performance is a real issue that you will have to face. Anything newer than a GTX 4xx will be throttled.

Unfortunately, X230's are a bit rare in this area and I don't have spare funds to go out and buy a laptop just for a video. The only ones I can feature are the machines I own or I am asked to repair. Perhaps one day. Glad you enjoyed the video!

X230 is certainly good, but some prefer the older X220 keyboard and depending on where you are geographically, a surplus of one might be available over the other affecting price like in my case.

Why would anyone get an X220 over an X230? The X230 has better performance, better battery, a better GPU, and they all have two USB 3.0 ports. Some people dislike the keyboard (I personally love it), but you can easily swap the X220 keyboard into an X230.

Price. I need a portable word processor and wireless email access. I'd plug a keyboard into my phone, but the screen is too small. Don't need usb 3.0, don't need GPU performance, etc. If I was willing to pay more to get more, I'd get a new Chromebook instead.

For that price, you could also get a new battery. If you are confident that the shop doing the work won't break the casing or board then I'd say ok, but even then, recelling has its risks.

My apologies, your sentence as written implied that was the cost of the battery, not the cost of the laptop. Rebuild services around here are comparable to new aftermarket options, with few companies offering the service in my area. That being said, I might try to get that one pack that won't charge rebuilt and I will post a video if I do it and the results.

Finger print readers were somewhat rare as many people didn't order them with the X220 as they were a business class laptop and I think a lot of businesses saw it as an extra and unnecessary cost. Sounds like the battery was put in improperly, getting it out will likely mean potential damage to the battery of the bits holding the battery. If it is generally not in good shape you might want to use it for parts and get another or go in a completely different direction.

The X220 is a great computer and was my start into ThinkPads. I don't agree that Lenovo "destroyed" ThinkPad, especially if you look at the last models that IBM produced, there was a lot of cost cutting. It's one of those cases of things not being as black and white as they appear.
